Why are we not giving Sharp a chance?

After seeing Rickie's fairytale England performance last night I was once again left questioning why Billy Sharp isn't being given a chance in the Prem. He's been written off before anybody's seen if he's able to deliver at this level. Rickie's performance shows that you have to give people a chance. Why are we being linked with players for silly sums of money when we have a striker that could potentially do a job for us?

I'm sure plenty of people will say that he's not good enough but in all seriousness how the **** do they know. Nobody's seen him given a chance in the Premiership.

Lambert has made the step up from the lower leagues, so why can't Billy do the same?

The club has seen what he is capable of in the Championship. That can give you an idea of what he'd be like at the next level, he's a good Championship player but doesn't have the ability to be a good Premier League player. If he really was good enough for the Premier League you'd think at the very least the newly promoted clubs like Palace, Hull and Cardiff would be interested knowing Saints want to sell, but they signed other targets. Instead Sharp was on loan in the Championship last season and this summer has attracted reported interest from Doncaster, Bournemouth and Sheff Weds.

Saints are looking to push on into the top half of the Premier League. To do that they need to sign Italian internationals like Osvaldo, not use Sharp. If Saints were happy to remain in the bottom half I'm sure Sharp would be reasonable cover, but Cortese has far more ambition than that and Sharp doesn't improve the current starting XI.

Lambert was the Championship's top scorer and player of the season, and is still only 'decent' as a striker in the Prem. Quality for us, but only decent compared to the rest of the league overall. Billy Sharp was 'decent' in the Championship, not enough for the step up IMO.

Thing is as well it's not just us is that have decided he's not PL quality. Other premier league teams are not exactly beating our door in with offers are they? Not even the newly promoted teams.

I'd love to be proved wrong, as I have a lot of time for Billy, but it seems he will be waiting a long time to get a crack in the EPL and it certainly won't be with us

Look at the strikers Hull and Palace have signed, that Gayle for £8m?! Sagbo, Kevin Phillips etc. Not exactly world beaters themselves.

Imagine Billy would probably be available at around what we paid for him, or a bit less ,£1-2m I guess.

Surely they would take a punt, even if on loan if he were deemed up to it?

It's a shame, as he is a really likable character, and with what he's been through of course you want him to succeed.

But as has been said, we are looking to push on and move forwards. We have been negotiating on and off with Osvaldo all summer - this is quite a step up in terms of ability compared to Sharp I'm afraid.

Thanks for those important goals Billy, but I think it is best for all to part ways here.

You can't comapare Sharp to Lambert,SRL has so many attributes to his game that make him dangerous and no disrespect to Sharp but he is not even in the same league as Lambert, would Billy of scored some of the goals Rickie did last year? the header against Man U,The pile driver against Villa, the free kick against Chelsea ???

No Chance would he

A ridiculous thread about a subject that has been more than overplayed.

Billy Sharp did a fantastic job for us but he is a "pretty good" championship player.

He had a good season with us and scored some crucial goals but he never looked head and shoulders above the rest so he was allowed to go out on loan when we hit the prem and his impact with forest surely proves that it was the correct move?

He has a poor touch, can't pass, is not quick nor good in the air. He is a good finisher but clearly not an elite level player.

Average champ striker with an underdog hero status, just like Chaplow, Wotton and countless other fan favourites that may have had one or two stand out moments but was consistently deeply average at best 80% of the time.

Sharp carried the team once, at home to Donny, exactly the same way he carried the team when we went to Donny and lost. That alone cannot be enough for a chance in the premier league and everyone bar a few deluded fans can see it.

That is far far too generous. His career record suggests that he isn't that good a finisher. Yes he will always get a few goals at Champioship level (and indeed thanks for those) and can be more prolific at Legaue 1 standard but that's it. When asked to do it regularly in the upper levels of the Championshiphe just hasn't shown the required consistency.

It's enough for me to know that neither of the managers we've had in the Prem have thought him good enough, and they've seen him play/train more than any of the rest of us.

Also, and more knowledgeable people will correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't 'giving Sharp a chance' necessitate giving him a squad place? That would make it a considerably bigger gamble.

Was Wotton ever a fans favourite ? Easily one of the worst Saints players Ive ever seen live

If there is an argument to be made for Sharpy to be given a chance in the PL, its this. We moved heaven and earth to get him here, when he clearly didn't want to move here. Remember the interviews when he signed? It wasn't a transfer he wanted to make imho, Donny needed the money and we wanted a good poacher. What I'd like to know is what was he told to convince him. If it was "we need you to do a job getting us over the promotion line, you'll get a great wage while youre here but once we're up, you're gone.." then thats fair enough. If, however, the line was"we're getting promoted with your assistance, then you'll be part of a prem side," thats different altogether. I cant help thinking he's been hard done by here, regardless of his wages.

The same reason we aren't giving a Hammond a chance?

probably, the thing is nowadays with all the sports science, video perfomance analysis and those little GPS vests that they wear in training from time to time coaches and analysts can see exactly what are the flaws in a player's game. They then suggest to him what he needs to do to correct said faults and I'd suppose if he isn't capable of doing what's asked of him on the training field and practice matches then he gets farmed out.

Sharp is obviously available for transfer so the question you should be asking yourself is why no other club is giving him his chance in the PL either. I mean at less than 2 million there are a few clubs who might give him a go if they thought he was good enough.

Good point, Palace are looking for a forward.
