Fox to join Bolton

Total rubbish. He is good enough as second choice left back for a mid to lower Prem team.

Maybe he wants to move back up north? He was at Burnley before us which is literally just down the road from Bolton.

Tbf if we've got a LB lined up already then I say let him go. Don't want to be overly negative but don't think he's good enough defensively to come in and cover.

If that's true (big IF) I would assume the plan is for Chambers to cover right back and Clyne to cover left back. If Shaw and Clyne both get injured we can play the "which CB is worst in the middle" game and dump one of them out there (worked so well with Yoshida).

Yep, agreed with that and that is just where we are atm. IF we want to step up then there would be several other players who would not make the grade of a top 6 PL team. Really don't the Fox 'hate' on here, it is quite laughable at times.

I don't hate Fox at all, but I do have eyes, and what I saw of him last season was enough to convince me that if it becomes necessary for him to have a prolonged run in the first team this season then we can kiss goodbye to any chance of a top half finish because he will cost us a lot of points.

@reluctantnicko Any Southampton in/outs looming Alan? Still some players to move on? Hammond, Sharp, Lee, Barnard? Osvaldo in?

@cj_garrett Want to move a few out. Fox, Sharp etc. Not easy.

I wonder if we have someone lined up that will only join if Fox goes.

We can only hope this is true...sell Fox and buy a proper left back...Cissoko from Valencia please

He's not going to play second fiddle to an 18 year old.

I personally feel we're after a utility defender, who can cover full back and CB. Would make more sense.

Barry in the 3rd person has been correct all along,

1) We need to overpay to get quality players to come here.

2) Thats still no guarantee.

3) We have needed a utility full back for over a year.

4) Danny Fox is useless.

5) If we get rid of him its as good as a new signing in irony.

probably right in this case, but there will be players of quality out there happy to get a big Premiership wage and who rate them self enough to possibly be selected ahead of Shaw, especially if he goes through a flat patch which all players do.

Reality is...Shaw is barely 18...an established left back will definitely play 15-20 games even if Shaw is on top of his game

it's a squad game and if the money is right...player will move...Fox is a weak link and needs to be upgraded...end of

still think it will be the other way round if we feel the need to sign another left back. For me Shaw is still defensively a bit green on the edges.

"For me Shaw is still defensively a bit green on the edges."

I agree - he is great and has great potential, but if you look at some of the goals that we conceded in preseason without rose-tinted spectacles it is clear that he could have done better. e.g. the header against the Spanish waiters... I see no harm in having a bit of genuine competition for this place...

Something that will get better with experience, unfortunately we can do nothing but wait there.

The goal we conceded away to Wigan still infuriates me, what on earth was he doing...that win would have been massive.

When Fox first joined, I have a Twitter conversation with a Burnley fan about his qualities. Was told he was a good crosser, had a decent free kick, but was dodgy defensively and was likely to make challenges that'd get him sent off. I'd agree with that assessment.

Seems like a decent enough chap, but was never entirely convinced with him at Championship level, and I find myself subconsciously downgrading our chances when he's on the pitch. Didn't matter as much in the Championship because often, the talent wasn't there to either expose him or capitalise on any blunders, but it's deadly in the Prem. I watched the highlights of the Real Sociedad game, and while it was good to see us eventually triumph, seeing the defensive problems sent shivers down my spine. Not blaming Fox for those goals, but he does add an element of defensive uncertainty. He'd probably be the weakest player in any realistic back four you played him with.

I've seen the arguments made about the difficulties of signing a left back, that no-one is going to play second fiddle to a seventeen year old. Shaw is early on in his development. He may have Bale-like aspirations to play further up the pitch, and it'd certainly suit Pochettino's aims of pressing high. That could leave the door open for a decent left back, and leave us with genuine options in terms of formations and cover.

I've got footage of Fox playing for Saints but wearing another teams kit. Just because the Saints fans didn't notice, doesn't mean it didn't happen. He actually scored the winning goal of the match, even though the press reported that Saints won the match. ****ing loonies, you cant fool us.
