Knowing our luck' date=' Gaston and Maya will collide in such a way that they're both out injured for the season...[/quote']

There are those on here who wouldn't be too bothered about that. Some think neither (or one, or the other) are good enough. I sure it must have been discussed in the HCDAJFU thread.

Personally, I hope they come through unscathed and get back to us ASAP. I doubt either will start on Saturday, after such a long trip and not being around to prepare for the match, but would like them both at least on the bench; and to start the following week.

Maya off after 55 minutes with the score 3-1 to Uruguay. Good that he does not have to play the full game...

Edit: at least it looked like Maya :?:

Yoshida's been substituted, like for like defender on. Not sure if this is due to his performance (please not injury!!)

Probably due to them having 12 subs on the bench and it being a friendly.

Agreed..

He made a poor clearance to give Suarez the 3rd goal...

Not a good day at the office for Maya

Add that to his shocker in the Confed Cup and it hasn't been a great summer for Yoshida. I'm one of the few that prefer Hooiveld to him anyway.

When I have seen him he looks a weak link in the Japan side.

I agree with that but granted I only saw him in the Confed Cup.

Personally I think he was our best and most consistent CB last season. I think some people forget the rave reviews he begun to get from fans of other clubs. I think this is due to the fact that we play two very good combative deep lying central midfielders, the full-backs were told to stop making Kamakaze runs after about the first 10 games of the season and the front 4 at Saints are pretty good at holding on to the ball and pressuring the opponents.

I will rate Yoshi on his performances for us, not Japan.

from what we saw of him last season I'd rather have Yoshida than Fonte or Hooiveld. After Yoshi it's Fonte then Hooiveld for me but i expect many will disagree

So far I am not a fan if I am honest. I felt he was too passive in games. Far too often he didn't get tight, bully strikers or win enough headers. His passing out from the back was often atrocious. Worse, dare I say it, than Jos.

He did play well in some games when he was a little nastier, but I want to see much more of that this season. I know you can't kick strikers up in the air these days and its all abut positioning and jockeying - which is his strength, but there is still a place for a physical presence and dominating strikers, rather than the other way round.

The good thing is he has age on his side and hopefully has settled in the UK so improvement is certainly a possibility, but I don't think he is a shoe in for the first eleven and if Fonte or Jos was selected ahead of him I wouldn't have a problem with that. Looking forward to seeing whatever partnership MP goes for and with Shaw, Morgan Cork and Wanyama offering more protection to CBs they hopefully won't be exposed like they were at the start of last season or at home to WBA at its end.

That's what Lovren's been brought in for. There are only a handful of teams who use two big, strong, aggressive centre halves and they are your Stoke types who base their game on those attributes.

My main problem with Yoshida is that he's poor at reading long balls over his head, especially low, flat ones, and he's not very quick on the turn, which is precisely what you don't need when the rest of the team is implementing a gameplan which leaves you exposed to long balls.

I used to think his passing was poor but by the end of the season it showed significant improvement over the frequent shinning of 10 yard passes that coloured his first few matches, and his positioning is usually decent. He's not the quickest, but none of our CBs are.

I don't think there's much difference in the speed or accuracy with which Hooiveld and Yoshida execute defensive passes, I think Fonte is probably less accurate but sharper and more agile, and offers more from an attacking perspective as he's much comfortable bringing the ball out. Having only seen Lovren a couple of times on the laptop and against Sociedad, I can confirm he likes a hoof, but not usually when the ball is on the ground.

If there are long, low, flat balls going over his head then he is probably on his arse and, therefore, unable to turn quickly. ;)

I think Maya is the most agile of our CBs. He is also the best, imo, at reading the game, making interceptions, goal-line clearances and tackles. He is probably the poorest in the air. For these reasons, I think he and Lovren will make a good partnership.
