What does Rickie Lambert need to do this season to go to the World Cup?

  • Make a good impression tomorrow - score at least one, or assist two goals
  • Stay fit for the majority of the season
  • Exceed his gols tally from last season for Saints.
  • Saints to finish top half so that his inclusion in the squad isn't too unfashionable.

He's competing with Carroll cos there's no way Hodgson will take both so he has to prove he's a better footballer (not hard) and at least as good in the air (harder)

We play West Ham at home on 15th September.

 

Would be unfortunate if Carroll got a long term injury in an accidental collision with one of our players...

As some people have said since his inclusion in this week's squad, Lambert wouldn't be in it if Carroll and Sturridge had been fit. Add to that there may be an unexpected English striker that makes a better impact next season (Hooper or Agbonlahor potentially fit this bill) and realistically Lambert would need the luck of a few English injuries to get a call up to the finals squad. If we make it of course.

 

Sadly I can't see it - otherwise everything the OP says is pretty much spot on.

Hmmm. Dubai is home to dodgy Witch Doctors these days trying to con people into giving them cash.

Perhaps I could invest a tenner in a dodgy spell and chant it from my seat in The Chapel for this game...

 

Knowing my luck all everyone would notice is a Dodgy Smell from my Saturday Night Chicken Patia down the Asia in Salisbury

If he has a good game, who knows? I just hope he gets a decent spell on the pitch to show what he's made of. We all know already, obviously, having seen him come up through the divisions with us and handle every step up without a tremble. I really hope he gets a proper chance and does well, if anybody in the game deserves that its Rickie Lambert.

Hopefully Rickie can show that he has a lot to his game,he is someone that you could put on when chasing a game and you need to play with a bit more urgrency (long ball),Crouchy had a great record for England and he was nowhere near as mobile as Rickie.

 

This is the first non competition England game in years I will watch tomorrow

I'm sure there'll be injuries come May. I'd take Sturridge over Defoe now, but Lambert over Carroll. Good to have different sorts of striker, and Rooney and Welbeck are guaranteed if half fit.

 

Pretty much this, tbh. SRL plays mostly in the space Rooney occupies, so it's either/ or if he gets picked and his game time would depend on Rooney's injuries or disinterest.

 

To get picked, he needs to make it difficult for Roy to drop him for the next squad. Joe Cole had a story that when he was first called up, a senior team member told him every game he played for England' he was playing for two caps, this one and the next.

 

But good luck to Rickie on Wednesday, he deserves his shot, no pun intended!

Agree with most of this but 1 goal a season Wellbeck needs to do a lot more than he has to get a spot on that plane.

I fear for Rickie tomorrow, having to play with inferior players in an archaic set up.

 

Expect it will spur him on to a hat-trick on Saturday.

 

His comments about the first few minutes of the 5-a-side in training being an eye-opener suggest not.

No doubt the press etc. are hoping he has a mare, and then Roy can drop him with his conscience clear, but then moan about the lack of English strikers.

I think this about covers it..

 

He needs to make a very good impression in his 30-45min tomorrow... He needs to have a better season than last year (or at least as good) - and this will be harder because we are going to get some second season syndrome for sure.

 

And finally... he needs injuries to go his way.

Believe me, the press will be wishing him well. He's a wonderful success story.

honestly though another season of being top English goalscorer in the league would make it hard for hodgson not to pick him if he's going to justify picking players on merit and not reputations

Put in a decent shift tonight, score 20 goals, stay injury free and hope his competition have uninspiring seasons.....oh and Engerlund also need to qualify.

Sadly I think this is a pretty accurate summing up of the situation. Hope I am also wrong.

If he plays well tonight, and if Saints are recognised as a side that can provide reasonable reinforcements to a senior england side (Clyne, Cork, Shaw, Lallana?, J Rod?) then potentially he could be a name on the plane. As I said before there are reasons teams are fashionable for England, its to do with numbers and tactics generally.

 

Ill be watching and hoping he copes with the England tactics tonight.

 

Carroll isnt a bad choice for England as a whole, he is better than people give him credit and is a handfull

It depends on how Andy Carroll performs this season. Hodgson won't take both, and if Carroll does well at West Ham then his existing tournament experience will work greatly in his favour.

 

This is if Lambert doesn't score ~20 goals next season and prove himself at international level in qualifiers and friendlies.

The chance that hit the post was unlucky because the ball took a nick off a defender just before it reached him. When Rooney plays he is like a school kid chasing all over the place for a touch of the ball and this drags England out of shape. Rickie came on and provided what was needed - a centre forward who holds a disciplined position so that the rest of the team know where he is. Unfortunately I doubt Hodgson will see it that way and he'll continue to pick Rooney who will continue to run around like a headless chicken.
