Downing & Chamakh - jealous? If not, then who SHOULD we have signed?

Downing has just signed a four year deal at Wet Spam while Chamakh has gone to Cripple Palace for a year. You may disagree, but I am in no way jealous of these signings. Is it a measure of how far we've come that if Downing has signed for Saints I'd be up in arms?

Which got me thinking - which of the completed Prem transfers from this summer do you wish had come to Saints, and why?

I would've had Downing here, definitely.

Put his age to one side (29), for £5m, he'd have been ideal for us out wide. Was watching BT Sport season preview last night and Michael Owen was saying how brilliant he was in training but thought the big stages crippled him. Said he found it difficult to get his confidence up and belief in his own ability. He was an absolute star for Villa under O'Neill but really struggled at Liverpool as it was a big stage.

Can't think of many (realistic) signings that we could've made that we missed out on that I'm jealous about - Caulker & Bony perhaps, if I was pushed.

Go back a bit further and Coutinho is the player I'm gutted we couldn't land.

FWIW - I think Chamakh & Downing will actually be good signings for their respective clubs.

Fee a side, he would likely have to come in as our top earner or close considering what he got at Liverpool. On that basis, wouldn't be worth it in my opinion.

Hahaha Wet Sham and Cripple palace... Excellent wit, truelly brilliant.

Fwiw I think Downing will be a good player, Chamakh is ok if deployed the right way, Wenger is brilliant at starving his strikers of the service they found there form with.

Make no mistake Id have taken Downing, I tend to make up my own opinion rather than jump on bandwagons

Other than that its a good thread.

Bony - exactly the front man we need and want IMO

Caulker - young, point to prove, steady CB

Hooper - Worth the punt IMO

Exactly those 3 for me....Downing not sure about.

Downing CHDAJFU but is not better than what we have - possibly slightly better than Puncheon but only marginally, certainly not our policy of signing much better players than we already have. I'm in no way jealous that he went to West Ham, and certainly am not jealous of Chamakh going to Palace, who's shown very little in this country to prove he's worth it. I do think he'll get a few for Palace though, without the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

Bony would have been a good signing for us if we're going on reasonable signings (meaning not someone ridiculous like Navas or Fernandinho) but if we go ahead and sign a top striker like Osvaldo, I bet there are few on here that would swap him for any other striker signing in the Premier League.

Kone... no sorry Chez I just cannot understand this one. We have 2 players of much better quality playing in this position and one of a similar style. From what I saw of Kone he only looked good in an average/poor team. I'll eat my words if he does a good job for Newcastle but I reckon it's a dud if they intend to progress much more than last season.

I will also be amazed if Kone does a good job for Newcastle

Bony for me so far. My Dutch league contacts say he will tear up the division.

However the last player they felt would do a good job was Steve De Ridder, so Ajax season tickets or no, I'll bide my judgement.

Of the others, the best deals were for Migniolet and Coutinho (last window) the rest I'm fairly un excited by (of realistic targets)

I also think that Downing at West Ham will do very well, just not for Saints (maybe its just the Stuart Ripley shiver I get). Some players just fit certain clubs.
