Colinjb Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Impressive. Take away Tim Howard and Brad Guzan though and they don't have anyone of any real note in that position now.

Minty Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 I must admit I knew little or nothing about Cropper before he joined Saints, and still don't really... but to be called up to the senior squad at 20 is still good going, irrespective of how much or how little talent the US allegedly has nowadays. Their standard is not that bad and there must be decent competition in MLS, surely?

Minty Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Squad is made up of non-MLS based players. Through choice or 'policy' or something else? Or is there that little quality back home? Excuse my ignorance, have no knowledge about US football at all to be honest...

BlakeySFC Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Still haven't seen him play. Guess he must be decent to get called up to the full US Squad (even if it is a poor team), I imagine he'll just be sitting on the bench, but even so, impressive to get called up for any full international team at 20. toe_punt Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Squad is made up of non-MLS based players. I'm too lazy to check, but I'd be willing to bet that this is not accurate based on the players I can think of.
johnnyboy Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Sorry to get all MLG on you but here is the USA squad U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION GOALKEEPERS (3): Cody Cropper (Southampton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton) DEFENDERS (7): John Anthony Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg), Tim Ream (Bolton Wanderers) MIDFIELDERS (: Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Roma), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Reading) FORWARDS (5): Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich) from http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/08/12/john-anthony-brooks-aron-johannsson-among-23-called-jurgen-klinsmann-friendl
Hokie Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Well done to him, but he's not ahead of Nick Rimando in the pecking order for the US. I'd also sincerely doubt that he's ahead of Sean Johnson and Bill Hamid. Those three are all MLS-based and were taken from their teams for several weeks during the Gold Cup recently. The friendly is played in Europe, so it makes good sense to have a look at him and not upset the MLS teams as they finish their seasons. Keeper is the one position Yanks never worry about. Olallana Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Was he called up in the squad at first or is he called up now to replace someone injured??
Hokie Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 Was he called up in the squad at first or is he called up now to replace someone injured?? The squad was only officially announced yesterday, and he was on it. Not sure how long camp even lasts for this useless international break, in general. DanW Posted 12 August, 2013 Share Posted 12 August, 2013 There isn't much background about the decision, but yes, Howard, Gruzan, Rimando, and Hamid are definitely ahead of Cropper in the pecking order. Of course, Cropper was the starting keeper for the U-20s World Cup team, so he is at least known around the USMNT camp. They also like that he plays in Europe and has really made all the right decisions about furthering his playing career.
Chez Posted 13 August, 2013 Share Posted 13 August, 2013 Was Cropper the lad Blackburn released at some point before we gave him a contract? Quite a turn around.

Rut Posted 15 August, 2013 Share Posted 15 August, 2013 USA were 2-0 down at HT but came back to win 4-3. A great 2nd half. Their 12th win in a row. Tim Howard was the USA keeper. Cropper didn't play. Give it time though...
