Clyne/Chambers-Lovren-Hooiveld-Shaw/Clyne/Fox

--------------Schneiderlin-Cork------------------

That's Shaw left back and Clyne right back if fit...

or Clyne left back and Chambers right back if Shaw's not but Clyne is...

or Fox left back and Chambers right back if both Clyne and Shaw are injured.

I'm also going for a defensive looking centre mid with a front 3 rotating.

I thought we bought Wanyama so we could play 3 in the midfield - Cork sitting in front of the back 4 and Morgan and Victor pressing forward

Cork and Morgan were probably our two best payers last season - it worries me if we're going to split them up - they were superb as our double pivot

Lambert's best position is in the hole behind another striker - but if we are going to play 4-3-3 he doesn't really fit in to the team - he lacks the pace and mobility you need to lead the line - unless he's going to play as basically a false number 9 - relying on the two wide forwards to get into the box

If we play Fox and Hooiveld at the back I expect us to lose - teams targeted Fox as the weak link in the Championship - what do you think they'll do in the Premiership

Having seen the game Saturday I think Morgan & Wanyama will be 1st choice at centre midfield not sure where Jack Cork will fit in may well be playing right back against West Brom.

I agree that Jack had a great season and him and Morgan worked so well but having seen Wanyama play I was very impressed looks like a great signing.

Looking forward to the game it will be my 1st visit to the Hawthorns another tick off the list

Are Ramirez and Yoshida match fit yet? They joined up with the rest of the squad late and have only taken part in two friendlies because of that. Aside from Shaw, I wouldn't be shocked if the team that played the first half v Sociedad is the one that lines up against WBA.

I think that will be the starting team too. Shame because Yoshida is so much more composed than Hooiveld, but looks like we have the horror show of Hooiveld and Fox. Although Guly would give more protection to Fox down the left

I see west brom have resigned zoltan gera after releasing him at the end of last season. Thought it strange that he wasn't signed by anyone as a freebee unless he has suffered from injuries. Though he should play us as hasn't been with a side for pre season. Wouldn't want to play him remembering his goal on the opening day at the hawthornes last season.

It is doubtful that Shaw or Clyne will figure unless the wheels come off before half time, why risk them if they are not fully fit. Also Yoshida must be a doubt as they're both playing in Japan today so don't bank on them being back in time to train and prepare for the weekend match. A draw will be good enough so expect us to go with

Cork - Fonte - Hooiveld - Fox

and keep the other four lads fit for the home game which we must win. Chambers is too much of a gamble at this level to start yet.

That back four is probably a bigger gamble than playing any one of Clyne, Shaw or Chambers.

A tad off topic but I see Moyes is getting his excuses in early... maybe we could tell him a thing or two about "difficult starts"...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23710359

Manchester United manager David Moyes has criticised his side's opening to the Premier League season, describing it as the "hardest start for 20 years".Among their first five games, the champions play Jose Mourinho's Chelsea at home and travel to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Moyes is unhappy with the way the fixtures have come out for his side.

"I find it hard to believe that's the way the balls came out of the bag, that's for sure," said the Scot.

"I hope it's not because Manchester United won the league quite comfortably last year [that] the fixtures have been made much more difficult."

Another side that can surprise people is Southampton, who are 6/4 to finish in the top ten and also tempting at even money in a season match bet with Newcastle.

Saints were even worse than Villa at the back at times, especially in the first ten games of the season but put things right under Mauricio Pochettino and have signed Dejan Lovren in their troublesome position of centre half.

Luke Shaw and Nathaniel Clyne should both thrive at full-back with a Premier League season under their belt. In front of them Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin were outstanding last season.

I was honoured to award Schneiderlin the club's player of the year award at the end of the season and at the time thought Southampton would do well to hold on to him. Not only did they do that but they've signed him up on long-term deal, as they have all the other key players in the squad.

Executive Chairman Nicola Cortese is a canny operator. He also made a major show of intent by signing Victor Wanyama from Celtic for £12.5m and he will add power alongside the energy of Cork and guile of Schneiderlin.

Saints also have plenty of attacking threat with Adam Lallana, Jason Puncheon and Gaston Ramires, who has taken time to find his feet but can improve massively in his second season.

Rickie Lambert guarantees goals while the rapidly improving Jay Rodriguez could be a decent bet to one day join Lambert in an England squad. These are exciting times on the South coast.

The fixture list isn't random, to be fair. It's adapted to maximise watchability on TV and suit the weekend schedules. Wouldn't surprise me if the early-season 'clash of the titans' games were put together to get an early look at all the new managers.

He had ligament damage halfway through last season and has been training with Baggies this summer. Not sure he'll be fully fit for another month or so.

Of course it's random, it's hard enough for them to get the fixtures to work as it is. If they really wanted to set up clashes they'd have Man City v Man UTd last game of the season.

What time is MP presser today?

Looks like we may be able to watch it live based on this tease tweet by the media department...

Tom Coull ‏@TomCoull 2m

Don't suppose anybody wants to watch Mauricio Pochettino's pre-WBA press conference live on YouTube at 3pm? Nah, probably not... #saintsfc

Oops....yes, in part. I'm anticipating the line up Pochettino started with vs Real Sociedad is the one he plans to start with vs WBA (injuries allowing) so I think Guly will start. And, yes, Puncheon ought to be on the bench but no idea who to exclude...

Can't see more than a draw TBH, West Brom are a decent footballing side and whilst Lukaku is a loss Anelka is a decent replacement who will get the goals.

Be interested to see how Diego Lugano gets on at WBA. A decent player and a good battle between him + Jonas Olsson vs Ricky will be worth watching.

1-1 or 2-1 to them.

We'll give em a spanking tomorrow and storm into the top 4 over the first few games and then stay there over the course of the season eventually finishing 2nd to Chelsea !

Feck me! A Saints fan. What are you doing on here?

If all the pre-season bull**** is anything to go by we'll got top tomorrow and stay there just as we did in the nPC and L1 and everyone will say it's a fluke and it can't last and it'll all end in tears. When we win the league by 9 points they'll all say that everyone else is crap and Saints were lucky in a poor year.

Lugano was a decent players but his legs are long gone. He was utterly terrible in the Confed Cup and has the turning speed of a bus.

Be interesting to see how we shall line up - we've operated a number of systems throughout pre-season - all of which seemed to have worked fairly well.

Foster

Jones McAuley Olsson Ridgewell

Mulumbu Yacob

Dorrans Anelka Morrison

Rosenberg

Subs: Myhill, Brunt, Lugano, Vydra, Long, Berahino, Popov

The link up play between Anelka, Morrison and Dorrans has been very promising. Anelka, despite aging has shown in pre-season that he still carries his class. He, naturally has dropped deep into midfield and rather orchestrated play allowing Dorrans and Morrison to get closer to Rosenberg who has suddenly found the goals in pre-season and for that reason alone shall probably keep Shane Long out the side.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Brunt start in place of Dorrans to be honest which would be unfair because throughout pre-season, he has showed the kind of form which made him a fans favourite down here a few seasons ago.
