whitenred Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 1st half as most agree, we were playing good football and should have been in the lead by more. By the way we were playing 4-4-2. Second half, especially after Robertson went off, McGoldrick moved back so we were playing 4-5-1. All that does is ensure that we can't keep the ball up front and the midfield gets even more crowded which means that we can't play our football. As soon as that happened, I knew that we wouldn't win as we were just asking for pressure to be put on us. Our best gameplan especially when we're up is to keep on pushing for the second as there should be more space for us. Whether McGoldrick was told to move back or he did it on his own initiative still goes back to Jan's
team-saint Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 did anyone notice that the linesman on the kingsland side looked just like simon cowell?? :-?
John McGrath's Jockstrap Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I was at the game today,,, but thought David Armstrong summed it up well - a) too intricate - 5-6 passes when 1-3 passes would do , b) lack of a killer pass (Llalana has the promise - COACH !! him to play to them, c) need to hit the deadline and cross.....Missing ingredient - neither Mcg or Robertson are the real deal to apply the finishing touch.....Rasiak and John are not either (maybe last season but not now).....time for a trade in Jan - there must be forward talent in lower leagues at cheap wages ??(eg Doyle 2-3 seasons ago). Frustrating coz the basics are there.....
Toomer Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 McGoldrick is just not up to it, we created enough to win by a country mile but again we fanny about to much and pay the price, if not for KD in the last 5 mins we would have lost.
AwaySaint1 Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 we are doing a hell of a lot better than I thought we would. Great first half. Gutted we didn't hold on. Cheer up people, we are playing well. Are you another season ticket holder in denial ?
harvey Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I compare Saints to Marylyn Monroe, lovely body & great tits, but once in bed............a humungous let down (I should imagine) :-k Tbh we had enough decent crosses into the box to have won it comfortably, there was just no one in the box at the right time. Makes all the pretty passing around a complete waste of time.
Amesbury Saint Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 at times I thought we were great but in the end lucky not to lose due to the last 10 minutes
Arizona Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I compare Saints to Marylyn Monroe, lovely body & great tits, but once in bed............a humungous let down (I should imagine) :-k Pah, you call that a metaphor? Saints are like... Janet Street-Porter on a beach - all mouth and no trousers. Kiera Knightly - Nice to look at, nothing up front. Ballet - Lots of fancy movement which is, all in all, ultimately pointless. Pepe the Skunk - Never gives up, but you just know he isn't going to score.
surrey1saint Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 Shame we couldn't hang on but not too down-hearted. We had enough chances to kill the game off at 1-0 but it wasn't to be. I think it's very much a mental thing now, the sooner we can get a win at St Mary's the better. Still, if we can come away with something on Monday night then things won't look too bad at all. Onwards and upwards! At last a positive post!
Wilko Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 Why is everybody so bloody negative? The kids played really well today and deserved to win the game. Sure, the finishing wasn't great, but what do you expect with a bunch of youngsters? Those who booed at the end should hang their heads in shame. They played their hearts out today. We need to realise where we are - we can't afford more than what we have. The kids are coming on well. People should give them a chance.

Long Shot Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 Disappointed with the result as I thought we controlled the game and were the better side throughout. Just failed to get that second goal. In goal Davis had another good game but in the main untroubled. One sticky moment in the first half when I thought the ball was going in the net off his fumble but he recovered. Great late save when the SW player was clearly offside but missed by the linesman. Full backs had a decent game, Skacel providing balance between defending and getting forward. One great first half free kick that McGoldrick should have scored but headed over. James had a vastly improved game, gave himself more time on the ball and passed well. Central defenders look the best pairing and must stay together for more games. Perry's experience was invaluable and Pearce looks strong and reads the game well. One moment when the striker turned Perry and Pearce came across to put in a great tackle and save what looked a certain goal. Central midfield with Surman and Cork looked a good pairing and understanding. Thought Surman had a great game and controlled the midfield complimented by Cork who, apart from a couple of poor passes, did the job well On the wide Wright Phillips had a superb game, scoring one and looked the only player throughout the match who had the ability to put it in the net. Lallana, for all his silky play came in too much narrowing the choice of play. Up front Robertson put himself about and looked ok but no cutting edge. McGoldrick had a poor game for me. Paterson looks ok as well. Give him 20 -30 minutes for the next few games so that he can develop before being thrown in at the deep end. A positive note to end. We looked more like a team that can compete in the Championship. No longer did it look like men against boys. This team is developing and if they are kept together I can see us climbing the table into the safety zone in the New Year. 7 out of 10 for the team. Men of the match Wright Phillips, Surman and Pearce in my book This is a sound and accurate review apart from BWP's input. Other than the goal I thought he was crap. Sorry Ron, he contributed nothing in the 2nd half. For me Surman and Cork were our best players. I wouldn't care if I never saw BWP in a Saints shirt again (his goal celebrations were crass considering everything that has happened). Another good performance but again we have not got the points we deserved. If only we had someone who could finish like Tudgay
team-saint Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 Why is everybody so bloody negative? The kids played really well today and deserved to win the game. Sure, the finishing wasn't great, but what do you expect with a bunch of youngsters? The problem is though, deserving to win is not enough. It's not that they don't have enough ability they are just not using it right which is why more experience is needed. We are lingering down at the bottom and from the last 2 home games we should have had 6 points not 2. But should of aint good enough because me, you and every other fan want us to stay up. I agree we should get behind the team and I certainly never boo but football is about results, if you don't get them you don't get them it doesn't matter how well you play.
SaintBobby Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I just wrote up my match report and wondered after wards if I'd been a little harsh. http://www.southampton-mad.co.uk/news/loadnews.asp?cid=TMNW&id=420877 I think we'll probably end up mid-lower table rather than a relegation scrap. But maybe that's just blind faith.
The Godfather Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I thought we were the better side in the first half, but didn't give their keeper enough to do. Then we struggled in the second half, couldn't keep the ball, kept giving it away cheaply and then payed the price and could of lost it in the end. BWP played well along with Kelvin Davis, as did the Pearce and Perry. Our midfield went missing in the second half but I can't see what Robertson offers upfront.
Calvin Posted 6 December, 2008 Posted 6 December, 2008 I am quide happy about the result. Typical Saints though to lapse concentration WE WILLLLLL WALK THIS LEAGUE!
um pahars Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Sheffield has alot going for it. Martin Fry, Phil Oakey, Glenn Gregory are all examples of what Sheffield produces and were top rate tonight. However, on the pitch, in the form of Wednesday they weren't too clever (but that says quite a bit about us) and as for that fat fcccuker in the stands, well 6 years ago it was fairly humorous, but it's now worn a bit thin. What next??? A group of ex miners bringing their trombones into a football ground???? They hate The Sun because it supported Thatcher and McGregor and yet a decade later they're all wearing Sun bowler hats and letting them sponsor a band!!!!!! Moving on, it was a game of two halves. First half we were very pretty, controlled the game, scored a good goal and looked comfortable. Second half we were awful, sat back, let them take the advantage and were lucky to get a point. If the substitutions last week salvaged a point, then todays cost us two. Gillet is fffucccking useless and almost cost us a goal befoe they scored. ****55ed off again and cant be ars5ed to hand out points apart from: gillet = -3 (yes minus three) McGoldrick = 1
Saints foreva Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 A crap statement you mug, but to be fair about today, the play was hardly down there much today 'Mug'
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Just logged on and seen the result. Not really interested in the performance having seen the score. Disappointing. No wonder no one goes to SMS any more.
jim_bergerac Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 At the start of the season I had no ambition other than survival this season, its now December and thats still my ambition. So when the dust settles I will take the point. Hoping we can now end our poor live on TV run of results on Monday night. C'mon ye Saints!
Long Shot Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 It is not pretty granted. But Charlton, Watford, Doncaster, Forest, Norwich - we simply have to finish above three of these. At the moment, we're doing that. And there's no reason to believe the team will get worse with more time is there? Today was a real blow because three points would have been such a lift and we were three minutes away from them. But since half the games are away from home... Not unless Surman and Lallana are sold in January, of course. We threw the points away today after playing well, mainly because we have no one as clinical as Tudgay around the box.
alpine_saint Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Wow, yet more bulllshiit again post-match about "deserving to win" and "playing well" despite another disappearance of the team in the second half and another two points at home dropped. I reckon some posters on here will try to see the bright side if we end up mathematically relegated before the end of the season.
bungle Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 1st half as most agree, we were playing good football and should have been in the lead by more. By the way we were playing 4-4-2. No we weren't, it was the same formation as always.

Seeing as you cant even agree with some people what formation we were playing, seems I dont need to be there to get a better impression than a dim-wit like you....

I reckon some posters on here will try to see the bright side if we end up mathematically relegated before the end of the season. Halfway through the season (almost) and we are not in the relegation zone. The team are getting stronger and more experienced. We are undefeated in four games. You IMO are a Skate on here to try and take the **** and wind people up an IMO are a CVNT.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Wow, yet more incisive comment from alpine on the 46,354th game in a row he never saw. But like it or not he is right....
Andy_Porter Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 the fact that we have done well away does not help jans case IMO...it shows yet again, he has no idea how to sort this problem....if you cant win your home games you are in big trouble It's just the way football is going, so many teams are better away from home. Lots of teams are set out to counter attack with 4-5-1 formations, when they are playing away the other side are more obliged to attack and there are more oppurtunities to counter attack.
Andy_Porter Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Well I can see what the problem is, and it's simple. Saints play european style football, which involves playing much more through the middle with short, quick passing. That means things can get very tight, especially at Home, where the teams are going to pack players behind the ball. When you have 10 or 11 opposition players behind the ball it gets very tight indeed. Occasionally you're going to get through and score, but if you don't vary the play you become predictable, albeit pretty to watch. During Away games, the opposition come out of their shell much more and attack, creating gaps in their defence. Which is why our game is paying off much better there. Now, I've no doubt Jan Poortvliet sees this, and his staff see this. And I've little doubt that they are telling the youngsters to vary the play. But footballers aren't the quickest of humans upstairs, even if they are quick in the legs and feet. This is going to take time. And for those who want to pay for JP's ferry journey home to Holland, I think you need to think again, because this is it, like it or lump it. People will know I'm no fully paid up member of the setup at Saints, but I am acutely aware that we're stuck with it. Spot on, there are lots of examples all over English football at the moment. The top two in the Premiership have both been shocking at home recently.
Legod Third Coming Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Not unless Surman and Lallana are sold in January, of course. We threw the points away today after playing well, mainly because we have no one as clinical as Tudgay around the box. Which is not - contrary to some of the complete cretins on this forum - the fault of the guy coaching and sending out the team... We cannot afford the wages of the people who scored our goals last season and the season before. Someone talks about ST holders being in denial - in fact it is the berks who keep asking for a change in tactics or coach/manager who seem to be in denial. Of course, perhaps they think we can appoint Harry Potter and he can cast a financiamous charm over the club, or maybe a scoriamous spell can transform our youth strikers with 20 games first team experience into Robinho... Time and again we carve teams open at will - Reading, Charlton, Birmingham... we simply then miss the goal. Against Norwich, a team with a striker would have won 8-0 not 2-0 - we missed so many chances it was comical. This is not about 4-4-3, 4-2-4, 4-4-2 - its about finishing. Plain and simple. Check the stats - we have more shots than anyone - but they're going high, wide, handsome or straight down the keeper's throat... Lowe needs to find the cash to bring John and Rasiak back - 15k more fans attending would sure help.
Andy_Porter Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 I thought we played well in the first half, we could beat anyone in the league if we played like that for the full 90 minutes. Lallana was everywhere in midfield and put in one of his better performances of the season, some of his passing was brilliant. He was let down again by his finishing. Second half was shocking and so where the subs, we should have had Euell on the bench instead of Patterson, if we could have brought on an experienced player up front we would have been fine IMO. Our bench was shocking yesterday, I don't see the point in having two holding players like Gillett and Wotton and leaving Gasmi and Euell on the bench, both can change a game. On Monday we have to start Euell and maybe Patterson, we looked toothless and tired up front. Some of the players looked shattered at the end of the game, I wouldn't be suprised to see a few changes for Monday.

Not if we do not score enough goals...one is rarely enough for us as has been proven, even if we do play teams off the park they will always get a chance or two and that`s when we pay the price for our cronic lack of a decent finisher. This cost thing keeps coming up,but if we had a decent goalscorer who could finish teams off we would most certainly win more games at home and more people would come through the turnstiles bringing more money in which could be used to pay for the above mentioned player. If we continue to huff and puff like we do and fail to win games people will not return....simple really...

Even if we simply can't bring back a loanee or sign someone I'd move Skacel to left wing and play Euell up front. Something isn't right when the most experienced player in your front four is BWP.

No crowd equals no money equals no striker equals no crowd equals no money... I think JP is trying all the options he has and has created - Peckhart, Paterson, Robertson, McGoldrick, BWP - but what we really need is our two most succesful strikers back. At first I wondered whether John and Rasiak would suit this system, but they will because they both hold the ball up so well and are incisive in the box!

badgerx16 Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 This is our massive catch 22 situation. No crowd equals no money equals no striker equals no crowd equals no money... But a significant number of the 'stay-aways' are doing so not because of the results but because of Rupes, and their catch-22 is that by turning up to support the team Ruddy Cheeks feels justified in persisting with his experiment. Rupert = low crowds = no money = no Rasiak / John = poor goal scoring......

Rupert = low crowds = no money = no Rasiak / John = poor goal scoring...... I'm afraid this theory will be blown away in January. Those who are staying away because of the Chairman are few - I have no truck with them. That's their view and that's their choice. The majority, however, will come flooding back when we start winning. People want to be associated with a winning team - look how full the KC Stadium is this season. And if we could somehow tempt them in now, we might have the money to bring back our goal-scorers!
Son of Bob Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Erm, nope. Especially as I am spot-on. Errr, no. I think people are right Alpine. Make the effort to go to an occasional game every season and other posters might actually give respectful replies to your views. How can you post remarks on the performance of the team when you've not attended the game? You are again giving people the impression that your interest lies not with the club, but with how you can best get the backs up of the other forum members. The fact you have the gall to wonder why you have such negative response to your persistent whinging is astounding. Funny, I was reading a story to me three year old last night which made me think of you. It was The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Now what was that thing called that resided under the bridge?

I really enjoyed the game, but the equaliser so late on was a real sickener, which just dissipated everything that had previously been played out. There is not much required to make this a side capable of sneaking into the play off's with just a couple (maybe 1) decent additions. The trouble is that is just pie in the sky for us with our financial condition.
Chez Posted 7 December, 2008 Posted 7 December, 2008 Are you another season ticket holder in denial ? I have a ST but I'm certainly not in denial. With the financial problems we have (we actually lost £17m last year without player sales saving us) I have said (and keep saying) that we will go down. Anything other than relegation will be a bonus. With that in mind I think we are doing pretty well. For starters we are than we finished last season, and really I like our passing style. I like the number of chances we are creating, I loving watching Lallana, Surman, McGoldrick and Cork linking up and but for some poor finishing we would have won quite a few more games. I do go to the away games so I have seen us win games this season.
