I'm currently watching Rio Ferdinand's testimonial with my girlfriend, who is, in the typical missus way, bombarding me with questions with either genuine interest or an attempt to show it to please me.

It has sparked a few Saints related strings of conversation though.

I'm sure there are more in my living memory (98 onwards), but I can only remember MLT, Oakley, Benali (I think) and one against Celtic, possibly Michael Svensson's.

So:

Who was the last Saints player to have a testimonial?

Who do you think is most deserving of the next one?

I'd be torn between Kelvin and SLR.

I'd be tipped to say KD as I think it'll be his last active season in a Saints shirt, whereas I reckon Lambert has at least two seasons in him at the top.

Watching football with you should be the last thing she attempts to please you.

Usually only awarded to a player after 10 years service, sometimes less in special circumstances. Think KD would need at least another 3 years to qualify. Lallana is the only other player that will even get close in the next few years, and he would still be some years away from retirement. Testimonials are much rarer these days, they used to be granted more in the days when players did not earn megabucks as they were a way of providing a last decent pay day.

I thought it was 10 years service that warranted a testimonial? (Which would make JWP eligible?) I'm confused.

I would say Kelvin too for the next. It's weird to think that Morgan's only 4 years away from ten years.

You may have noticed, when Cortese gave Kelvin a new deal, it was until 2016. That takes Kelvin up to ten years... having signed in 2006.

In September 2016 he will be 40. So you'd imagine maybe the club will give him a send off that summer as he retires at 40 years old.

Benali had one with the saints team of the time v a saints all stars team, finished 8-8 if memory serves and it also showed how good MLT was in goal

Jason Dodd had one against a celebrity team or something (didnt go was away)

MLT saints v england all stars team that was maybe a 8-8 as well?

Claus v Celtic 0-2 and didnt Claus pay for the pitch to be relayed??

Thats the last few i remember

Most of the youngster signing contracts now have been with club since they were 7 or 8 so technically they qualify for a testimonial too!

Pretty sure joining the academy at eight years old doesn't count as "service". JWP has got a few years to go before he deserves a testimonial, as he would admit himself.

I think only professional years of service count when looking at testimonials, so most players would need to be at least 27/28 before being eligible. I think both Kelvin and Lallana will almost certainly get one, hopefully Morgan too.

Are players immeadietly entitled to a testimonial or does it have to be awarded by their club? Pretty sure Matt Oakley was entitled to one but he left before he had the opportunity.
