Bristol RFC were renamed the Bristol Shoguns for a sponsorship deal, London Broncos (RL) have had around 4 names in 10 years, every time Red Bull buy a team they are renamed. In sport It's not that new, it's just the first time it has happened to a premiership team. If another were to follow I suspect it would be "Cardiff City Dragons"

As the OP says, it's a bit American for my liking. Not a fan

That's awful low class & tacky. Re branding is going mad now & is there any real evidence that it is proving to have any financial gain whatsoever? Or just chairman make decisions on shirt colours, badges now names on a whim & a fancy.

Would be gutted if we were called the Southampton Saints or something American like that. Wouldn't be surprised if we did jump on the "branding" bandwagon though, not like Cortese has valued any of our traditions and history in the past.

With us changing kit, Cardiff completely changing colours and now this it seems we will start seeing a lot more of this.

A price we have to pay due to having all these wealthy foreign owners. Tradition means nothing to them.

Being renamed after a random animal to sound macho and appeal to an American audience that doesn't exist will not go down well with the average fan. For us on the other hand, having been called Southampton St Mary's before, at least it's not too much of a break from tradition to be nicknamed Southampton Saints. However the christian connotations would probably put off some marketing guru and we'd end up with something like Southampton Spitfires (unless there is already a team with that name?).

I think Kent's T20 team used the Spitfires name after tying up with Shepherd Neame brewery.

Rob Key looks scary there.

It will happen one day, sooner rather than later I would imagine,

And it will more likely be Southampton Eterna than Southampton Saints.

PS I had to look up the name of the watch firm, so it goes to show that the marketing isn't working

One of our original names was as Southampton St Mary's so if we were to change our name to Southampton Saints then it would be a fantastic return to our roots and honouring our history.

I'd never heard of them and now I know who they are and really like the look of their product, seems to be having some effect.

I always thought Tiger's existed, have I missed something here, or have I had a funny turn................................

I agree tbh. So long as it's not an animal or sponsor then I'd accept a name change. So long as it is relevant to Southampton then I'm happy.

I actually think it can be counter productive. Sponsors shoving their name on to a club / place which has a long tradition just alienates people. Good branding is about being associated with a team people care about and the perception your brand is supporting it, not taking it over / changing it.

Our club has had four names since 1885...

St. Mary's Young Mens Association

St. Mary's Football Club

Southampton St Mary's

Southampton Football Club

and 3 of them were in the first 12 years, only one of them since 1897.

Well if Hull stick with Hull City Tigers for 100 years+ like we have with our 4th name then that will become "tradition". People are fixated that football shouldn't change when it does constantly and new "traditions" have been created. Anything that is different from the original club when formed is a deviation from "tradition".

I'm not saying Southampton should have a name change, what I'm saying is the whole notion of tradition in football is flimsy.

he didn't mention that of them were in the 1800's though.

I'm sure he'll go on about tradition and changing names is not a recent thing etc.

Hull Tigers are already known as the Tigers locally, as one of the city's two Rugby League sides is Hull FC (the other being Hull Kingston Rovers), otherwise known as just 'Hull'. It is no big deal. Basically they are formalising something which has already happened locally.

It is only news to those outside Hull.

And Saints are called Saints by everyone in Southampton.

Not the same as being officially renamed Southampton Saints.

It is a big deal in Hull and would be here if the same happened.

Luckily all traditions start today so Hull Tigers is already their traditional name. Ask MLG.

Look, we can't take the moral high ground and criticise another team for trampling all over its own traditions. I know the history but, as far as everyone else is concerned, our shirts have red and white stripes ...

When I lived there in the mid 90s they were known as `City' by ullites. In recent times knickname `The Tigers' has gained prominence, but `Hull Tigers' seems a step too far. What next, the Sunderland Black cats? The owner points to short names being the reason but City is shorter than Tigers the last time I counted.

This name change reminds me of that Budweiser **** take advert with the Portsmouth Pirates etc. Sadly fiction seems to becoming reality

Its hardly a huge change. Their current badge already has a large picture of a tiger and the words "The Tigers" written on it.

Hull City with a nickname The Tigers is not the same as Hull Tigers.

does anyone actually think a name change to Southampton Saints would be OK? That would be a very sad day if you ask me.

No. Nobody does. Some just want a reaction and fishing.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Too bloody American for my liking, it reminds me of that Budweiser campaign around 2005-2007 when they jokingly renamed every PL club and had a fake American advert for some.

The 'West Ham Hammers' for example, don't know if anyone remembers that, but it literally took the **** and was quite a comical advert and now Hull have come along and actually done it....

We've been called "Southampton St Mary's" before, so isn't reverting to older names "traditional"? ;)

There is a very definitive difference between naming the club after a part of it's home city and adopting the nickname into the official title.
