BristolSaint Posted 7 August, 2013 Author Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I think I am slightly injured too! I put injured twice in opening post!
pangy Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Wellbeck scored more last season........Oh wait It would seem if you play for a top 4 team no matter what form you are carrying you are a automatic shoe in for a England place. Didnt Rodwell even get a game for England last season?
Saint_Tony Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 The whole 'Lambert for England' debate is going to be neverending until he gets a call up. Personally I think he deserves it, even if it's only for one game and this would be an ideal opportunity. Sadly, it just won't happen, I'd still expect Rooney to be called up along with Sturridge and Walcott. Even if Lambert was top english scorer again then Hodgson would come up with an excuse, unless we have a situation like with Ferdinand where he bowed down to media pressure and picked him just to shut them up. pap Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 No, lets not take SRL, a proven goalscorer. Forget the fact that age doesn't seem to be a bar for most other nations. I think we're better off just picking young players up from big clubs in the hopes that one day, they'll come good. I just hope they're ready for the World Cup next year

SuperMikey Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I am more likely to get a call up,Hodgson was such a poor choice yet another manager that is afraid to pick players in form from "lesser" teams I don't think the blame for neglecting players from smaller clubs is entirely on Hodgson, the FA are obsessed with the idea of the England squad being "elite" and that to them basically means only picking players from clubs in the Top 6. FWIW i've never been a really active member of the Rickie For England club, but with all the turmoil surrounding Rooney at the moment with his personal issues and the fact that a lot of strikers that would've had places in the squad are currently injured then I think it would be good to see a few players like Rickie get selected. I'd have Rickie and Gary Hooper in there for a start. Who knows, might give a few of the billy big b*llocks strikers that are milling along in the England team the kick up the ar5e they need to stake their claim? S-Clarke Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 If Jay starts the season well, he'll be in the England squad. The England scouts were heavily watching him at the back end of last season, his tail off in the last 6 games killed his opportunity for one of the friendless at the end of the season. Rickie isn't really being considered, same as why Grant Holt wasn't considered. Not sure why, but that's that. (Still baffles me how utter Dross like Boothroyd can get a cap though)
doubleonothing Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Amused me that as soon as Hooper signed for Norwich, a few of the papers were saying he should be called up to the England squad. Never know, with Crocker going to the FA, maybe he'll have a word along the lines of "Roy, you've clearly not seen him, but Southampton have got a lad called Lambert on their books. Been doing the business in the league. I'd call him up if I was you."

Dalek2003 Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 The answer to your question is simple - "it's because he plays for Southampton". If that is the case, then you can see why some of the top strikers will not come to Saints or for that matter the likes of Norwich. I think we have to be realistic and go for players that are likely to see us as a good career move. Norwich have known this for a long time and have successfully built good TEAMS with players who are good but have little international expectations but at the same time play for a good solid mid table premier team. Mallagroth Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I live in hope that one day Roy might turn round and give Rickie a chance and refuel my interest in England team. Will it happen... doubt it. Should it happen... tough call.

Will it happen... doubt it. Should it happen... tough call. I know what you mean. I barely give England a second thought nowadays. You can guarantee the hype and you just know in reality it will be a let down. BTW, cannot understand Chelski obsession with Rooney, who is well past his best IMO. Le Timmier Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Would a call-up for Lambert benefit Saints in any way? Maybe there's an argument that international exposure would make him a better player but at his age I'm not convinced by that. Does it not just increase the chances of him getting injured? The9 Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Hodgson should pick players that suit his system and who are on form. On that basis, only Cork might get a call up.
BotleySaint Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Hodgson will be looking to the future with his selections. As much as I'd like to see Rickie get a call up, he isn't exactly the future for the English national side at 31 years old. If he did get picked, it'd end up being a Kevin Davies situation. Once all the other strikers are available he'd be out of it whatever he does and likely never be called up again. Plus he hasn't exactly been on top form so far this pre-season (how many goals?) and what England need is a striker, on form. Hooper is at least much younger. But to say he's ready for a call up is a bit premature!

Smirking_Saint Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 (edited) Hodgson should pick players that suit his system and who are on form. On that basis, only Cork might get a call up. This, and Clyne FWIW. And Morgan if we can convince him he is English But there are reasons why the top teams (or in reality the teams that have the majority of able English players available) are favoured. Though with so few strikers around at the moment, and a nothing friendly ? Stranger things have happened. Someone mentioned hooper earlier, he probably should have been tried much sooner Edited 7 August, 2013 by Smirking_Saint
