alpine_saint Posted 6 August, 2013 Share Posted 6 August, 2013 Will they fetch sticks, or even better, shot game for you ? Will they snuggle up to you on a cold winters night or after a bad day/news, and provide emotional comfort ? Will they let you know if someone is attempting to break in ? No. Will they f**k. What they will do is strangle two poor little kids to death if you are stupid enough to let them escape into their bedroom. I really wonder about these weirdo pet shops. alpine_saint Posted 6 August, 2013 Author Share Posted 6 August, 2013 All depends on what type of snake you have alpine. Mrs D has a snake here........... Snakes are sh*ts. They either try to crush you or are venomous. Would you explain what the attraction of keeping one as a pet is ? I am really struggling to understand it. Whilst I personally can't see the fun in it, he is very attached to it & he has learnt valuable lessons in responsibility.

Snake-keeping responsibility - toss a dead mouse in once-a-month, keep the tank closed. Why didnt you get him a dog, or even a gerbil if learning responsibility is so important ? Bearsy Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 (edited) I had snake when kid! He was call Alan! Will they fetch sticks, or even better, shot game for you ? Lol I like how fetching sticks is useful service provided by other pets! Be honest, do you really need them sticks? Will they snuggle up to you on a cold winters night or after a bad day/news, and provide emotional comfort ? Yeah if it's cold they could totally snuggle up to you. I'm not sure you'd enjoy it tho. I reckon the emotional comfort is your own projection, I don't think animals is intentionally providing emotional comfort. Will they let you know if someone is attempting to break in ? The circumstance never arose, but I like to imagine Alan would eat them. What they will do is strangle two poor little kids to death if you are stupid enough to let them escape into their bedroom. Yeah that was bad. I never had personal experience of that. My brother got mauled by a dog tho. Edited 7 August, 2013 by Bearsy
sunrise Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Well in the UK, there has been only 1 recorded snake-related human fatality in the UK in almost 40 years, a King Cobra biting it's owner. I wonder how many dog related human fatalities there have been in that period of time? Well there's been 3 so far this year.
Marsdinho Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I would have one just for observational purposes.
SuperMikey Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I'd have a snake, sure. They're fascinating creatures. Not sure I would want a venomous one though until I was more experienced at keeping them.

It wasn't bought with the intention of teaching responsibility, he wanted one for his birthday, the responsibility comes as an added benefit. For your info (although I don't know why I bothering) but there's a bit more to it than you think - it gets fed & fully cleaned out weekly, water changed & sh!t checked daily & the vivariums temperature regularly monitored, especially during the hot weather. We have refused many requests from No.2 son for a dog for the simple reason it would be shut indoors for most of the day.
Lighthouse Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Got 2 king snakes. Always wanted one as a kid, so when I left home I bought a couple. They're pretty cool to watch sometimes, much the same as having an aquarium really. Having said that, the novelty has worn off a bit now and I'm looking to sell them. Obviously keeping a 15ft python in the same house as an infant is ridiculous, although no different to having a large aggressive dog.

I am surprised by that figure...my sister got bitten by a small adder - 2 years on she is still suffering from the after effects. Made an almighty mess of her leg.... I've been looking to buy a snake for a while now, because I just find them fascinating animals, I want a pet and I haven't got the spare time for anything that requires more maintenance. Also, if you think that it's merely feeding it once a month and keeping the door closed, maybe you should look up shedding and the complications that can arise from it. Of course it teaches responsibility ffs.

Feed the match thread once a week with misery and then drop a little tantrum into the tank in preseason. Then sit back and watch the scores update online. Why anyone is surprised that Alpine would have a narrow minded view on a subject and then not listen when others answer his question, I have no idea. Lighthouse Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 A good rule of thumb is 1 adult to every 5 feet of snake. Anything up to about 10ft and adult should be able to handle safely. 10-15ft you're better off having a friend there to help out handling. Above 15ft 3 people, if you somehow managed to get hold of a 20ft plus snake, 4 people. etc.
Ohio Saint Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 I sometimes wonder why this forum keeps a pet Alpine. It doesn't fetch sticks, "Shot game for you" (sic) and I certainly wouldn't want it to snuggle up to me on a cold winter's night. All I ever see it do is pee on everyone and talk a load of bullocks. Thanking you in advance for when it's my time! To be fair, you did click on a thread entitled, "What is the attraction in keeping a pet snake?" KelvinsRightGlove Posted 7 August, 2013 Share Posted 7 August, 2013 Blow me, I'm in complete agreement with alps. That said, I'm properly phobic petrified of snakes. So yeah, the thought of having one as a pet simply does not compute.
