Your moments...

A bit of an open topic now, something a bit different anyway to the bickering over transfer policy. ;)

Which moments in your time as a Saint have given you the most:

Joy

Sadness

Amusement

The most Joy for me was Sharp's goal v Coventry just over a year ago. Even more so then the FA Cup Semi final v Watford, the promotion from League 1 or many others. It just felt like it was culmination of effort and the end to an exile. The rest of that day was a blur.

The saddest moment has to be the the opposite of the above, the end of the Man Utd game in May 2005 that sealed our relegation and knowing, just knowing that the way the club was being run at the time would ensure our absence for a long, long time.

For amusement... Dave Beasant acting along to the 'shoot the pompey scum' song at the Matthew Le Tissier testimonial. Had everyone around me in stitches.

Joy - Would probably go with the same game vs. Coventry. Don't really member any of the details of the game once Sharp scored, but the whole wave of euphoria that went through the stadium and the pitch invasion afterwards was amazing to be involved with. As you say, a massive release after too many years in the football wilderness.

Sadness - I always remember one horrific game vs. Middlesbrough (I think in the 1998 season) when we threw away a 3-2 lead in injury time to draw 3-3 - Boro only had nine men on the pitch! Remember throwing the ball away from Andy Townsend to try and waste some time when he was taking a throw-in (stupid thing to do I know, but I was young,) but they still managed to nab the equaliser. Seemed to encapsualte our habit of self-imploding.

The one that hurt the most though was probably the play-off semi-final away leg against Derby. Cracking game and the atmosphere was incredible, but an awful feeling at the end knowing how poor Derby actually were (*****ing Darren Moore) and how we had massively under-achieved considering how strong our squad was. We should have been Champions with a better manager in place. The mutant Derby fans chanting at us at the end didn't help either, nor did the torrential rain on the journey back.

Amusement - 'you're just a fat Alan Carr' chant at the steward at the Hartlepool away game in 2011 made a miserable game that bit more bearable.

Joy - Watching Saints finally getting promoted back to the Prem with all my family around me on my birthday. Wept for hours!

Sadness - Relegation in 2005. Just could not accept that we were no longer a Premier League side, especially because of the way we just limped out without a fight after everything we'd been through to stay up year after year for 26 years. The horror!

Amusement - Man Utd changing their shirts at half time because that was the only possible reason why we might be out-playing them, then still losing

That interminable season under Poortvliet et. al.

The football under Branfoot.

Joy/sadness...

The last match at the Dell (Arsenal)

I forgot amusement...

CMFG's goal at Ipswich. Even the maestro himself was laughing at it.

I'm sure I'll be repeating other posters on this topic but my moments are..

Joy - the adventure of the last 3 seasons has given me more joy than all the other seasons I have supported Saints combined. This joy culminated in the Coventry City game which secured promotion back to the top flight. A brilliant day, result and atmosphere! After a day of drinking my memory of that Saturday becomes hazy at around 6pm...the next thing I remember is waking up at London Waterloo station with no wallet, money or train ticket. I then managed to negotiate my way back to Maidenhead whilst gently humming WTFILN to myself. The one train ticket inspector I came across let me off and congratulated us on our return to the Premier Division. Markus' face on the big screen at Wembley filled me with pride and joy as did the reception he received from the fans that day.

Sadness - Relegation from the Premier League was tough to take especislly when we were given a glimmer of hope by going 1-0 up on the last day. The less said the better.

Amusement - I've tried to think of something less obvious and a bit obscure.. One of the funniest things I've seen on a day watching Saints was after the JPT Final at Wembley. A load of fans were drinking outside the stadium at some of those mobile bars celebrating the win when it quickly became apparent that everyone walking out of a certain part of the stadium, down an alley and onto the road where we were stood couldn't see that there was a curb to step down onto the road. Cue 100 or so Saints fans shouting 'Ooooooooh' like an opposition goal kick whilst the bemused and unsuspecting pedestrians approached, confused as to why they were receiving such a reception, before tripping to a chorus of 'Weeeeeeeeeeey' and trying desperately to style it out! Maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the Wembley win, maybe you just had to be there...but it was hilarious!

Joy - Matt le tiss scoring last goal at the dell, JPT final, win against Pompey in December 2003 to put us 4th at Xmas (all downhill from there!), first game in 2009-10 with the relief we still had a club to support, both promotion days

Sadness - 2-0 down at home to Notts Forest in 2008-09 with fans calling for Lowe to go, others shouting to get behind the team, fans fighting amongst themselves and some falling down the Northam block 42/41 aisle. From this the realisation that it was going to get a lot worse before it got better.

Amusement - any of Strachans posts match interviews, Dave Beasant in Franny'a testamonial running up the pitch with the ball up his shirt, seeing Pompey's fall down the leagues coupled with our rise

Joy - Promotion x 2, Pahars goal v skates, Ormerods goal at anfield.

Sad - Nigel going (at the time) I was actually quite sad - felt like a bit of a tart but I survived.

Amusement - Difficult one - there can't be many more comical things than that stupid statue. Makes me smile every time I see it.

Joy - promotion and promotion, and getting to Cardiff 2003. Beating Coventry away 1999, first time we had won the opening game for about 9 seasons

Sadness - 2005 obviously, but losing the final in 2003 and the Derby play off are both up there. Pahars farwell, I must admit

Amusement - Pompey away, Alan Knight testimonial, 1994. Thrashing them, while Dave Beasant played in midfield in full keeper kit including gloves and they had 12 on the pitch

Joy - Norwich '05. Even though we went down the same year, I felt like we might be able to pull it off again.

Sadness - Reading '12 (home). Losing to them was awful as I hated their fans and how cocky they are. Still time has worn on since then...

Nigel Leaving - Genuinely felt sad. Worst I've felt.

Amusement - Leyton Orient (away). Took up the whole stand and turned it into a home game.

Gus Poyet what a ****** what a ******. Oh and "he looks like a horse"

Joy - Promotion from League 1, the first promotion as a Saints fan I'd witnessed, the start of great things to come and a genuine feeling of positivity.

Sadness - The Alan Ball tributes during the first game after his sad passing. Something I'll never forget is being part of a stadium full of fans - home and away - slow-chanting his name. I had a genuine lump in my throat.

Amusement - 'Wotsit, wotsit, give us a wave'. Stupid thing, just sticks in my mind.

Joy - Dellhurst park. Brilliant day

Sadness - Ted bates passing and the lack of respect by the pompey fans (many, not all) who were just a few rows away from me

Amusement - laughing at fans calling a player a 'wotsit'... cutting edge

Was that not Doncaster? I was caught in the middle of all that and was right up there with the most disappointing moments supporting Saints.

JOY - Although I was there in 76 and that was for a long time my greatest joy at a football match, I would now say the JPT final because I witnessed a wembley cup final win with my son, theres nothing better than celebrating a win with your kids

SADNESS - As above re portsmuff fans (not all) showing lack of respect to Ted "Mr Southampton" Bates, a great man who deserved so much more. ML's passing left a numb feeling of whats going to happen now. Lastly Steve Mills testimonial was just sad all round, nice guy gone too soon

AMUSEMENT - A few, Bruce Grobbelars (spelling police) cap in hand to arsenal supporters after his match fixing came out. Vinnie Jones kicking a ball in wimbledons warm up that hit one of the matching band. Outnumbering MK Dons supporters in the JPT away semi. And lots and lots of non politically correct chants at opposition supporter

Oh possibly, that whole season just seemed to be one big blur of disappointment! I had never felt so uninterested at going to each game that year

Joy. Coventry game the whole day and evening celebrating and waking up the next day elated and celebrating all day again!

Sadness. Two down at home to Doncaster in the cold and wet, throwing my season ticket on the pitch in sheer frustration and anger at what Lowe had done to our club

Funny. Seeing a fan in the East Stand at the Dell standing up and pushing Vinnie Jones in the back as he stood back to take a throw in. The stare he got from Jones was one to strike the fear of god into you it was hilarious!
