Was watching the Sheff United v Notts County game tonight which kicked off the new FL season

and I saw that Bart was in goal for County tonight as it looks like he may be Countys number 1

GK and I thought that he did OK tonight and I thought that he did OK in general at Saints minus

a few slip ups maybe so am seeing what people thought of him in general?

Thanks!

I've seen Bialkowski and Gazzaniga play. As back up, I was more confident in Bialkowski, although I understand Gazza is still young and learning. Both made blunders - I remember Bart's against Blackpool - Callum McManaman scored through Bart's legs.

Who'd be a goalkeeper eh!

Unfair comparison, Bart didnt play PL.

Having watched both, I don't see anything in Gazzaniga to suggest he is any better than Bialkowski, certainly not £2m better. Unfortunately Bart's confidence got shot to pieces after the error against Blackpool and he was never able to recover. He had some fine games for us in both the Championship and League 1 though, and his penalty shoot out show against Norwich at SMS in the JPT was superb. He'll make a decent career for himself in the lower leagues of that I am sure.

Bit unfair on both, Kelvin has made just as many blunders, and if I am wrong still no. 2 at Saints.

Not knocking him, but perhaps we need to get a good understudy for Boruc?

I agree with that totally. Trouble is you never see how a goalie develops unless he's in first team action against top strikers. But Gazza may come good - in a year or two.

Who recalls Tim Flowers...? who had his debut whilst Peter Shilton was still our no.1 keeper...and let in 11 goals in his first three apps. Even after PS left he didn't get a real go and had to wait his chance behind Burridge for another two seasons before getting the green jersey. Mind you after that he was first choice for 4 seasons - and gained England honours before joining Shearer at Blackburn. Sorry to all those Gazza fans, but I wasn't convinced last season, but in the future - who knows?.

Meanwhile, YES I'd like another top keeper this season, just so that we have a choice in case of an emergency

...and as for Bart, well if he ends up as a Prem. keeper then he'll have proved a point, but he had chances whilst he was here, and like Gazza his inexperience showed.

If any of you saw his performance away at Exeter in the league cup, you would never ever rate him. Sadly we have a lot of fans who dont see a good keeper when we had one. We had all the nonsense about Smith being better than Niemi, a string of keepers who werre supposedly better than KD , none of them have gone on to do SFA. Davis and Lambert were the main reasons we ever got to the PL, had we had Bart or any of the other clowns we would not have got promotion, they would have cost us many points.

If I recall correctly when he first arrived at SFC - way back during our previous PL stay - he looked like a good, borderline outstanding, young prospect. In retrospect when we signed Kelvin he probably should have taken the hint and looked for another club then because too many years spent playing second fiddle to other keepers has done him no good at all. As others have already said, it's virtually impossible to develop into a proper top class keeper when you're not playing regularity at an appropriate level. By the time he last played in our first team he looked to have 'developed' (if that is the right word) into a bag of nerves frankly.

We so often criticise players for being too ambitious and seeking moves to where the grass is supposedly greener. Well Barts time here shows that not being ambitious enough can also prove to be damaging to a young footballer's career.

Leaving this club may paradoxically prove to be the best thing that has happened to this player for many a year.

As a young fan inthe early 1960's, I watched several Saints' games when goalies were injured and an outfielder had to take the green jersey.

This was the time pre-1966, subs. were not allowed, and can recall the likes of Terry Paine, David Webb and Jimmy Gabriel all taking thie turn ..not forgetting Cliff Huxford who kept goal in a remarkable Div.2 game v Derby County at The Dell when the Saints played out the second half with only 9 men ...and still won 6-4. Even after that - if a goalie had to leave the field, we still had to find a suitable replacement from those on the field and it took quite a few more seasons before before the increased number of subs. on the bench allowed us to sub. a goalie for a goalie.

Not so long ago, we can remember Paul Jines keeping a clean sheet in the FA CUp Final - yet ironically only collecting a losers medal (Niemi had conceded before he had to go off injured.

However, quite a few fans have, at various times, " praised " Blackstock's short "sojourn " as a goalkeeper but although he ws "courageous / stupid " enough to volunteer to go in goal-- honestly speaking, it was the most terrifying time I've had watching a Saints game in decades. Although he made a couple of saves, his handling (or lack of it) was appauling IMHO. Nothing against the lad , he was quite a useful striker in his time, but never a goalie.

He looked like signing of the decade to start with, didn't he have a few fantastic games and save a penalty in his first? (or second?)

Then he broke his finger after about seven appearances, I think, and never seemed to get his form or confidence back.

waiver: iirc.

I thought he did his knee landing funny while catching the ball.

While some people say that Bart was never the same after his knee injury, I still reckon his best Saints performance came after that injury. He was absolutely fantastic when we beat Wolves 6-0 away, if it hadn't been for him then we'd probably have lost that game, as crazy as that sounds.
