El Trofeo Memorial de Quinocho: Celta Vigo vs Southampton - (KO - 19:00 BST)

4-1 FT (on penalties that is).

Pretty annoying, dominated the game for 90% pretty much. Didn't convert the chances we had, look very slick up until the final third but lack idea's at times. Wouldn't say no to a Banega and Damiao type signing in the next few weeks.

We dominated and looked very fit. Shaw looks like he's going to be outstanding this year (England call up by end of season I reckon). Mayuka was offside way too much. Celta looked poor. Pressing game looks like it's getting even more effective. Add a lethal striker and we can be very excited about the season ahead.

Not too fussed about losing on penalties as wouldn't imagine any of them would be anywhere near a penalty kick on true match day. From what I could pick out from the slightly suspect stream, we played very well and the passed the ball about with pace and poise. Unfortunately we are still struggling in the final third and are desperately needing that new CF to provide some competition for places. Good to see Gaston have a good half and link up nicely. All in all, seeing as we are still a couple of weeks till the league starts, we are doing alright.

Watched most of the 2nd half and don't remember a clear cut chance created.

We really are gonna struggle this year, IMO we'll carry on the same form that we finished last season with.

Definitely need a creative signing.

The second half was largely our reserve team, apart form Boruc and Shaw.

From what I could see our 1st half XI were much more effective and created lots more chances.

Looked excellent at times in 1st half

Way above them in terms of movement and quality. Ramirez, lovren, shaw and wanyama were excellent

How Rodriguez fluffed that chance I would never know

Just imagine a Lukaku upfront in that team

Guly header bit bar.

Davis shot from 10 yards saved.

Guly shot just wide from inside the box.

Enough chances to have taken one.

Ok, was difficult to suss out who was actually playing most of the time so ill take your word for it

Was the first half a lot better then?

Did we create much?

First half was...

K.Davis

Chambers

Lovren

Yoshida

Shaw

Schneiderlin

Wanyama

Ramirez

Rodriguez

Lallana

Lambert

Second half was...

Boruc

Chambers

Fonte

Hooiveld

Shaw/Fox

Cork

Ward-Prowse

Puncheon

S.Davis

Do Prado

Mayuka

It was better in the first half with more of the players that will start against West Brom playing. But even in the 2nd half Saints did have a number of chances.

So you missed Guly's shot just to the right of the post, Davis's shot that was very well saved and Guly's strong header against the bar. There were other lesser chances but 3 golden opportunities. Perhaps the stream was particularly bad for you, if so hard luck that you missed all of them.

We looked much better with Gaston on the pitch. Lallana did very little, Rodriguez missed a sitter, but apart from that very promising. Like the look of Lovren, he is a big upgrade on the others, and looks like he could make a good partnership with Yoshi.

Shaw and JWP look like they've bulked up a bit. Wanyama is a monster but didn't particularly impress me in this game, sure he'll settle a bit more though in games to come - new level for him to be playing at on a regular basis.

We look much more solid under Poche, but I just worry the system doesn't really suit Lambert, and therefore we're struggling to score. His job to find a way of sorting that though! Overall a promising performance.

Real Sociedad will be a perfect test and could compare to playing Udinese like we did last year IMO. Would expect that by thursday the intensity in training will go down a bit to freshen up them legs to the start of the season so next week could probably be a game with fewer substitutions and more players that will play at least 70 minutes....

When Saints were the 10th top scorers in the Premier League?

Irrespective of how we compared, there were far too many games last season where we dominated possession for long periods, but created little, and spurned what chances we did create to then fall behind, or be thankful for a draw. Spurs, Sunderland away are the more recent examples, before that Swansea (home and away),Norwich (a), and Everton (h) spring to mind. Even Wigan (a) where we lambast our defence for conceding so late, could have been put to rest had we taken chances created in a second half onslaught.

Apart from Jack Cork, most, if not all, the midfielders/strikers have scored some great looking goals at times, but apart from Lambert, haven't done it consistently. It was failure to convert chances that made the end of last season a disappointment when top half was there for the taking and a lack of goals left us in 14th. Don't think Poch will have learnt anything he didn't already know, that Cortese has just got to find him a quality goal scorer. The squad is good, but the missing player for the number 11 shirt does need to be someone quite special.
