sydneysaint Posted 1 August, 2013 Posted 1 August, 2013 Charles Miller was the son of a railway worker in Brazil. He returned to Southampton for an education in 1884. he was a natural at football. He played as a winger/striker. On his return to Brazil the first clubs were formed - Corinthians. Corinthians won the Charles Miller international tournament in 1955 a statue to him is erected outside the stadium. If we do indeed get a well known striker from Brazil then the above when properly researched and in conjunction with the player and photo of statue would make the skeleton good press release. there is much more info on the web i.e. Southampton toured in the early days. He is much revered by players such as Pele etc. excuse brevity and spelling/grammar as IQ is/was 146, but cant concentrate long after stroke and triple bypass. I am also aware a lot of you know this story but it is intended for SFC Thank you for your forbearance.
RonManager Posted 1 August, 2013 Posted 1 August, 2013 Spot on mate. If it happens, after 130 years it would close the circle.
dubai_phil Posted 1 August, 2013 Posted 1 August, 2013 Isn't there a painting of Charlie Miller now somewhere near SMS? On the Railway Bridge or something? Think he has been recognised at long last
SNSUN Posted 1 August, 2013 Posted 1 August, 2013 Always good to learn more about Saints history. I'm usually confined to Duncan's books to learn about our past.
The9 Posted 1 August, 2013 Posted 1 August, 2013 Isn't there a painting of Charlie Miller now somewhere near SMS? On the Railway Bridge or something? Think he has been recognised at long last There's a half-finished looking mural on the railway bridge near Northam Road, onto which some helpful local has now graffiti'd a bloody great triangle or pentangle-looking thing over some of his face. So not really being recognised, especially as he's only alongside some outlines of planes and ships anyway. At least he's on the banner though. Up there, look ! He's the first one. Think he gets a mention in one of the "early days" videos in the National Football Museum in Manchester as well.

Think he has been recognised at long last There is indeed. For a lot of the research into Charles Miller you need to thank the writers Dave Juson and Aidan Hamilton, the latter a Portuguese speaker.
Saint in Paradise Posted 2 August, 2013 Posted 2 August, 2013 I read the other day that Exeter are going to Brazil next year to celebrate them being the first to play an international Brazilian team in 1914 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23468146 How come Saints don't jump on the bandwagon and trumpet the Charlie Miller link in Brazil?

Doctoroncall Posted 2 August, 2013 Posted 2 August, 2013 He gets a mention along with Saints in Inverting the pyramid by Johnathan Wilson.
StInky Posted 2 August, 2013 Posted 2 August, 2013 [h=1]God is Brazilian: Charles Miller, the Man Who Brought Football To Brazil[/h] By Josh Lacey. A very good read and widely available.

saintbletch Posted 3 August, 2013 Posted 3 August, 2013 My Basingstoke-born, Liverpool-supporting mate now lives in São Paulo. Whenever I speak with him or his Brazil-supporting wife and they tell me how great football is over there, I remind them that without the Saints their national sport might well be baseball or basketball. Good old Charles Miller. It really is a good story, and I agree that we should make more of it as a club - especially if we're now trying to sign more Brazilians.
