dellboypete Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 Just saw this on the Bleacher Report (an interesting (for me) website that I picked up on here some time ago) http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1722843-ranking-premier-league-strikers-on-their-transfer-fee-to-goal-ratio/page/18 which ranks Rickie Lambert as the best value for money striker in the prem based on Transfer Fee-to-Goal Ratio

alpine_saint Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 I am under no illusions. If it werent for Rickie, we wouldnt be about to embark on our second season back in the big time. I saw how it was his play that changed the complexion of that Besiktas game in the blink of an eye. People can mewl and puke about his age and his fitness, but he is a critcal member of the team still.
Ewell Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 Well said Alpine and spot on. It amazes me whenever I hear saints fans wanting to replace him with calls of he is not quick enough and has little pace. He doesn't need it he is that good a footballer. We would be a much worse team without him but granted he does need some competition for his place and to be rested once in a while.
Minty Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 I've said it for several years now, his role is becoming very similar to that which Teddy Sheringham had - intelligent link play, good touch, able to read the game, perfect weight of pass, and of course good finisher too. In the right team, with the right players around him, he has got a good few years left in the top flight IMO.
Mystic Force Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 Lambert has been awesome, but you cannot get 90 minuets out of him every game of the season. The games he looked worse in were the midweek ones where he had played the full 90 a few days before. And towards the end of the season his form really dropped. He should have been rested but there was apparently no available replacement. It would have probably been better to have a rested lambert in a few of those games than a crocked one in all of them. Awesome player can't do it all the time at this intensity.
BlakeySFC Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 Bleacher Report is an absolutely atrocious website. Always like seeing SRL at Number 1 though

FreemantleSaint Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 Great points from both Alpine and Minty I thought. I don't understand Saints fans who are ready to despense with a quality footballer like Lambert. As pace is not a part of his game anyway, he could be a Premier League footballer until his mid-thirties if he can stay clear of injuries. As Minty said he brings so much to our all-round attacking play with his excellent control, holding up and vision etc. I also found it interesting last season how much he pulled wide to stretch defences and then found our on-rushing midfielders with quality crosses. He is also of course the best penalty taker in the game at the moment, possibly even better than Le Tiss for that? I am one who is in favour of us signing a big and pacy centre forward but only as a partner to Rickie in a possible 4-1-2-1-2, or even 4-4-2 if the odd occasion demands, or cover/sub/competition if we are going to play one upfront. Smirking_Saint Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 The post Lambert transition will be a big challenge for the club when the day comes. To anyone who has had a genuine interest in Poch's tactics and targets will realise its already begun. Nevertheless though Rickie has been the most important signing of our transition from the lower leagues and Ill always hold him as one of our icons

Bucks Saint Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 The post Lambert transition will be a big challenge for the club when the day comes. Very true, but we thought we would be well and truly doomed post MLT, and of course we managed just fine

Alain Perrin Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 The thing I miss from Lambert is the thirty yard pearlers he used to score for fun in L1. That's dropped away from his game, partly due to where/how he's playing but also, I think, confidence. Bucks Saint Posted 1 August, 2013 Share Posted 1 August, 2013 (edited) Yep, we stayed up for another 2 whole seasons. 3 seasons after he retired. He had no longer been a guaranteed starter for at least 2 years before that (sub in THAT game at the Dell). Oh, and the first year after he retired was 2002-03, which went ok. We did not go down because MLT retired Edited 1 August, 2013 by Bucks Saint
