Squad Numbers Released

tends to indicate Hooieveld won't be in the first game starting line up. Very few changes, guess the old numbering system was an Adkins thingy.

See we've kept number 11 free then...Gazza gone from 12 to 25.

Obviously you didn't read the OS otherwise you's know that Jos asked for No 26 as it was the first shirt he wore here. It's qiute obvious that he's a sentimental kinda guy and these things clearly mean a lot to him. He's bound to be in the starting line-up, no fera of less he's agree player and nowhere near as much of a whoopsie as Jose. Maya ain't fit yet and will start on the bench.

Yeah, I'm sure Jos "asked" for 26. Just like Barnard "asked" to not be given a number at all last season, etc. Not everyone is bothered about shirt numbers, but no-one's going to offer to take a tangible demotion no matter how much they claim not to be bothered. If he'd never taken 5 last season, yeah sure, keep your original number, Lallana style, but aside from Nicklas Bendtner who is a known delusional, no-one does that.

Glad Wanyama has a sensible number too, not that the Prem rules allow random number selections. In fact I'm surprised we've been allowed the list we have with the holes in it, though obviously the youth/U21s will fill up the 30s.

Even though the rules changed about the shirt numbers (1 to 11 must start, no squad number allocation) a long time ago, it seems to me being in the first 11 still has a psychological impact.

My son has just been given 5 by his U-14 team, and 7 by his U16 team, and appears to be dead chuffed about it.

Also worth noting that 11 was Sharp, 14 was Hammond, 15 was Forren, 17 was Forte, 19 Lee, 22 Richardson, 25 Seaborne, 26 Stephens, 27 Chaplow, 28 Chambers, 29 Reeves, 32 Butterfield.

The players who were in 11, 14, 17, 19, 26 last season have not left yet, and only one of those numbers is "officially" assigned.

So they should, too. Who wants to be number 23 ? ;)

I don't understand all this crap about the PL not allowing big numbers etc. if that's true then why is Punch allowed to get away with 42.

Because we have a load of fringe players with numbers in the 30s and always have done in the Prem. We just name a couple more to get us up to 42. Arsenal used to field entire teams of kids in the League Cup with numbers in the 50s, that's not really the same as trying to artificially fabricate a situation to give a player a pointlessly high number for the sake of it.

FWIW Wanyama asked for 12 as it is his favorite number.

12 is his his current number for Kenya and was his number at previous club Beerschot.

This is the kind of stuff MLG should be coming up with when he's not getting things wrong.

Found some pics, only a training top at Beerschot, but good enough for me :

Wikipedia is showing Will Britt has been given 43 and Chris Johns 44 (our 5th and 6th choice keepers!). Anyone knnow if this is reality or is it just Wiki?

Generally it's a sound source when not obvious cobblers, but unless they've been listed in the programme, on the Saints website, or on an actual first team team sheet, it's pure speculation. Not even the post-transfer window Premier League 25-man squad lists show the squad numbers.

Wikipedia did have a lot of the youth players listed pre-season when they hadn't been given numbers though...

Britt and Johns have had a couple of outings each for the U21..along with Gazzaniga and Cropper (who has been unfortunate to play in two of their heaviest defeats).

All four seem to be used in rota. The only other regular is U18 keeper Harry Isted..... almost got frostbite in the 7-0 drubbing of Pompey in the FA Youth Cup, he had so little to do.

But let's hope Boruc is back soon .. especially as Gazzaniga seemed to take a knock in that incident prior to the ref's knockout v Newcastle.

I wouldn't like to have to call upon any of the others in any upcoming games.
