Saints near the bottom for players signed, any cause to panic?

We're Doomed- Doomed I say!!

We must spend billions to be a great club!!

It appears we have another draft of nippers coming through from the academy. Anybody got any issues with Luke or James from last season? I expect Calum will be the pick of this years crop that all the big clubs will be sniffing around in no time.

It baffles me that people think that we should just piddle money up the wall on alsorts of ordinary to gain any credibility in the world of Football.

I expect a slagging for this but based on last years performance we got mugged right off with the £12m we coughed up for Ramirez, compare him to Shaw who by comparison cost us mere bobbins by comparison, which of the 2 were the big fish reputitly sniffing round. If Cortese was to open negotiations today to sell him whoever bought him probably wouldn't see much change out of £15-£20m+ especially as he has Prem experience under his belt and is English born. So Chelsea for example buy Shaw tomorrow (for those who dont know Chelsea had Shaw on their books before telling him he was too small to make it with them at the age of 12!!) for £18m plus add-ons etc does that really make Chelsea better than Saints because they have spent £18m more than us on what we got for nothing?!!

Fiorentina, inter and arsenal sniffing around gaston. Hardly small fry them lot, are they?

Striker is an always was priority, the way we play we need to replace Rickie

I truly hate reading comments like yours and I am hearing comments like this far too often at the moment and I have to say like yours they are a load of tosh. We need a striker to compliment Rickie and so we are able to rest Rickie from time to time. To Replace Rickie would be suicidal as he is pivotal to how we play and still our most influential player.

No room for sentiment in football. Look at the way we play, we need legs up front to compliment a fluid and high pressing line. Its not rocket science.

I love rickie, but atleast I have the ******** to stick my head up and say he is not the man for the next level, he can help another striker of course. And likelyhood is we wouldnt be here without him

Lets just copy Swansea then.

Signied Michu

Won a Cup

Playing in Europe

How much did they spend? Not much but they spent it wisely.

If you want to guarantee top 6 then maybe panic...otherwise look forward to the new season.

A season watching quality young players, probably showing inconsistency, some amazing wins, some very disappointing games... But safely in the middle third of the table.

Agreed. A point which I have raised with my Sunderland supporting housemate! You can't compare Saints and Sunderland's transfer strategies this Summer as they needed a complete overhaul and we require 3-4 quality additions. That said I genuinely think that Sunderland will struggle this season as they have seem to have gone with a bit of a scatter gun approach to their Summer spending. There will no team spirit or cohesion in their squad whereas we have a really settled group of lads who seem to have a great bond based on back to back promotions and excellent performances in the 2nd half of last season.

Must I stress that this team who need a complete shake up beat us and held us to a draw last season??

I don't believe saints will make anymore signings this window nor do I believe we need many however watching Swansea now says to me we so very much need a goal threat!

17m picking up players in key positions to compliment what they had signed in previous prem campaigns

Same as us then

Really when are we away to Red Bull Salzburg?

A striker is a key position for us, a utility full back is also important, a goalkeeper would not go amiss and neither would a winger who can play both sides.

There is no way we will get into Europe with our current squad.

I know it's not what people mean, but we have added Chambers and Isgrove to the squad, so there are 4 new faces so to speak.

Not the headline grabbing superstar signings that people want, but I love watching developing youngsters......

my reaction to that post was the same. Just because we signed two young Academy players ....it's as if they don't count, because they didn't cost £12 million a piece.

Think back to August 2012 when.. Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse hadn't played a Premier League game, either............

No. Dalek thinks we'll struggle so almost alone. Most probably expect mid table ranging from tenth to fourteenth so an improvement in some way over last season. There may well be a poll at the start of the season to see where we expect Saints to finish!

Yes, but I am now trying to tow the line and to be fair I am doing my best to fit in and ride a wave of optimism, so 5th it is !

If you want to "fit in" you should pick 2 or 3 posters then obsessively follow them around the forum and insult them or if youre feeling lazy just call them a "wum"

Works for the majority of the high profile posters on here :)

Or you can continue as you are aka a good poster with his own views and mind.

Dont get sucked in by the SWF boring crew mate

I love the pro Cortese/European dream crowd, they to me they radiate a blind optimism thats not seen in any walks of life anymore, God's power is diminishing yet the cult of Cortese is growing, maybe we should relocate to the Arizona and play in a compound.......................

Trust me these guys will argue with themselves....... I recently replied to a few forum comments using the same posters earlier post. Faced with their own posts they then did a 360 and had the opposite opinion to just 45 minutes earlier. Hilarious to see mate and sums up these bores

If we don't get in at least one top striker we might regret it big time. Last year we relied too much on Lambert, if he gets injured or is not on his game this season I can't see where the goals are coming from. A few injuries up front and we are relegation fodder at the moment.

FWIW I agree regarding striker, but then I felt this was as important as a CB. A winger and possibly a back up keeper would certainly help.

But a striker is needed and I think we will get one.

My point is that building a good team takes time, credit to Swansea, we seem to be applying similar logic but at higher sums. Why we were not in for bony is beyond me though

They seem to have spent less and had more success?

I would say we shouldn't apply copy is a better word, teams around us have improved and so have we, we just need to improve a bit further than them and also stregthen our squad as its pie in the sky we will get into Europe or anywhere near it with this team/squad.

You can quote me on this all season and I will be more than happy to eat humble pie.

Without a mobile striker, we wont get into europe I agree

They have also been building for longer. We have only really been building since your mate NC came in Baz.

Sorry how long have Swansea been building for? How much money have they spent? 1 season maximum, so therefore we should win the League Cup this year? Finish 8th? Been in Europe next season?

I not so positive with our current crop of players over others.

I would rather quality over quantity. Also we need a striker to help out Rickie when he gets short of goals like towards the end of last season.

Lets sign quality then, the issue with that is what level of quality, the highest level wont come here, the next level could go to bigger clubs so we will have to pay more, Cortese appears to be very reluctant to part with money in this manner.

I agree with you pal, I love Rickie too, but if we want to play the high pressing game which everyone is telling us is the tactic to take us to the next level then Lambert will need to be sacrificed as he isn't the player to do this. The problem a lot of our fans seem to have is that they want the 'next level' but seem to think the players we had in L1 can take us there.

They had to get there though beating Liverpool and Chelsea away, we lost 3-0 to Leeds, keep it real lad.

We haven't picked a predominantly first team side for a league cup game in about 3 years, which does somewhat reduce the likelihood of us winning said competition. Might change this year though. They didn't HAVE to beat Chelsea away, it was a two-legged semi-final - they did do that though. Just like we beat Chelsea on aggregate over our two league matches last season. And Chelsea didn't pick Petr Cech and had their number 57 on the bench, but they did have a decent side out.

did we not beat Chelsea in the league as well then? we are a newly promoted side that had to set our priorities straight which was to ensure safety in the league and not be distracted by a cup run. I don't see your point Barry, you seem to like Swansea and Norwich alot for a saints supporter.

The key to predicting our season is to decide which was our typical form.

If it was the early part of last season, we are stuffed.

The middle part and we could finish top 10.

The latter part, when we struggled to score and beat some pretty mediocre teams, then we will struggle.

Again, we have not been decisive in the transfer market and like last year have failed to deal with known weaknesses.

IMO if we fail to get a top rated striker, we will be relegated.

01 Cech

02 Ivanovic

03 Cole

24 Cahill

28 Azpilicueta

07 Ramires

08 Lampard

10 Mata

11 Oscar

17 Hazard

29 Ba

This was the Chelsea team they beat 2-0 in the first leg, not too bad I would say..........................................

Didn't we take 4 points off Chelsea?

Anyway, i do agree about Lambert, it's taken me some time, he absolutely still has a key role to play, but if we are to progress to the next level he ultimately needs to play less and be replaced by someone younger and more mobile.

I don't think we'll be relegated simply because there's definitely 3 worse teams than Saints in the league. However, I don't see us finishing in the top 10 and I'll be surprised if we finish above where we did last season. Our defence still concerns me as does our lack of firepower. I don't understand why we've not made a move for a proven goalscorer like Bent. He's available for sensible money and will always score goals.

The key to predicting our season is to decide which was our typical form.

If it was the early part of last season, we are stuffed. - Should not be this again

The middle part and we could finish top 10 - was this during our 'new manager syndrome' period ?If so, can/will it be consistently reproduced ?

The latter part, when we struggled to score and beat some pretty mediocre teams, then we will struggle - more worrying

Agree about the transfers, although doubt we will be worse than last season, so unlikely to go down.

Yet again our transfer strategy seems to be to chase some high profile (over) expensive targets, which ultimately leaves us chasing shadows for weeks on end.

The prospect of a £20m + Brazilian international, is beyond our wildest dreams of a few years ago, but I'm not convinced this is the right course for us, how long will such a player need to 'settle' etc ? With the exception of Ardiles very few South American players have immediately adapted to the game here, and been trouble free. Any other names that are likely to be thrown back at me, are likely to at least have had a year or so in Spain or Italy ie a European league first.
