tomf05 Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 So much can change in 2 1/2 weeks, but here goes... --------------------BORUC------------------ CLYNE----LOVREN----MAYA----SHAW ---------WANYAMA----CORK------------- -------------------MORGAN---------------- JAYROD--------------------------LALLANA -------------------LAMBERT----------------- That's what I would play anyway. Expect we'll see Morgan alongside VW and Ramirez/Davis in the hole behind Rickie. This.
Batman Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 I have a feeling we're going to lose this one. Would like a draw, and suppose it can't be worse than either game v WBA last season! Still think it's crazy to break up the Cork/Morgan partnership, which was basically the best thing about the team last season. Would like to see Wanyama play with them or just in front, as he seems very capable of breaking forward into the box, and the 3 would be very strong together. Then Lallana/JRod/Lambert up front. Ramirez probably not ready so him and Puncheon on the bench. just imagine the hysteria if we do

Ramirez probably not ready so him and Puncheon on the bench. Agree on the tactical point (except there is no way I would pick Lallana over Puncheon at the moment). For a tricky away game we should play those three (Cork, MS, Vic) in midfield with Wanyama roaming in front of the other two. Although Wanyama is not exactly a "number 10" in the way Gaston is, Steven Davis was effective there last season due to his tenacity and energy and those are certainly qualities that Wanyama should also bring (along with, hopefully, more of a goal threat). Given our aggressive defending style, players like Wanyama can be very effective deployed in a more forward role. Personally, I hope we put some faith in Gaston this season and get him properly established in the "number 10" position but, frankly, he needs to help himself by showing his fitness is up to it first. I also hope we get some decent corner deliveries this year (ie. not Lallana taking them). A team with Lambert, Rodriguez, Wanyama, Hooiveld and Lovren in it should really be quite dangerous from set pieces! Schneiderlin and Cork are also reasonably tall and should command attention from the oppo's defenders. I note that JWP seems to have a really good set piece (although he will struggle to get too much game time, barring injuries/suspensions). A draw would be a good start and give us some confidence to take into the first home game.
Giordano Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 West Brom have got Shane Long and Anelka as key strikers. Long is NOT better than Jrod and Anelka at 34 may have better technique and history of playing top level footie but surely he is not better than SRL nowadays? And we Have Mayuka in reserve - they have - ?? OUR on the pitch strikers are better than their strikers, imo. Their midfield is not as good as ours and neither is their defence, imo.. Steve Clarke is a smart cookie though and has outfoxed us twice with tactics plus they had Lukaku. Surely we must have learned by now how to play against West Brom, and that without Lukaku they are not as potent? If we match them up on formation our players are better than their players and we should not lose. I hope we go out to beat this team out of site because I think we can, but its more likely we will go out to get at least a point from our first match and avoid last years terrible start. A 0-0 draw for me is most likely result.

A 0-0 draw for me is most likely result. They have Rosenburg as back up striker... used a bit like Mayuka actually, not many starts and comes on. Good history though, might see more of him this year now lukaku has gone. Their defence and keeper are imo better than ours at the mo. Very solid team all over. Plus they are pretty solid at home. DuncanRG Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 (edited) OUR on the pitch strikers are better than their strikers, imo. Their midfield is not as good as ours and neither is their defence, imo.. I'm not sure either is true. Mulumbu and Yacob are the only midfield pairing outside the top seven to rival Cork and Schneiderlin for me, and they absolutely dominated home and away last season. Morrison would walk into our first team and Chris Brunt ain't bad either. They're not rock solid at the back but have lots of experience and are good going forward. It depends on how our new look back four turns out I suppose. Keep up the goal threat (which Shane Long did contribute to last season) and they're still a better team than us. Does anyone know if they're planning on keeping/reforming Odemwingie? If he's off I expect they'll want another striker anyway. Long, Anelka and Rosenberg isn't a top half strikeforce. Long and Anelka are not better than Jrod and SRL on goals scored last season. If Odemwingie leaves as expected WBA may struggle to supply them two in any case. Mulumbu and Yacob are an excellent non-top four MF pair but i would rather have Cork + Schneiderlin myself : maybe thats rose tinted glasses :-) plus we have added Big Vic - for me that is a stronger defensive MF than them, especially with us the away team with the onus on their (now inferior imo) attacking players to hurt us. Defence- our Fb's are better ( or maybe i should say in time will be better as i think both Clyne and Shaw are potential future England fb's) but WBA are decently strong in defence right now - Dawson, Ridgewell, Olsson, Reid all good or very good players.. home advantage too. Still reckon a draw. Perhaps its just i remember playing these way back in Div 2 and Div 1 and they never frightened us much. Did'nt we beat them 4-0 once ? :-) This WBA is a different proposition though! Edited 2 August, 2013 by Giordano
DuncanRG Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 I agree our forward line is better and that the addition of Wanyama could give us an advantage. Would certainly have rather played them a few games later though, so he had some match time under his belt.

DuncanRG Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 Davis is one of our standout performers under Pochettino so far. No idea what part he'll play this season but at the moment he's a good choice for the central position.
NewYorkSaint Posted 2 August, 2013 Share Posted 2 August, 2013 When you go player by player and compare this year with last, there's every reason to think we will do a lot better. Goalkeeper: last year we were at 6's and 7's half the season. This year... Boruc is proven. L and R backs: Shaw and Clyne can only have gained in experience and strength. Shaw only came in part way thru. And we now have great backup for Clyne in Chambers. Center backs: last year, a v inexperienced and nervy Jos and Jose. This year they're experienced - and still only make backup. Holding midfield: Schneiderlin and Cork. Awesome last year... this year shd only be better. They're both young and gained amazing experience last time round. And they're now aided and abetted by the thrilling prospect of Wanyama. Attacking midfield: Gaston, Adam, Punch, Davis. Slight concern about Adam. He started last season as team's best player and lost his way after the injury. Will be back 100%? Gaston wildcard but shd be better. Lots of options. Strikers: Rickie is key question. He's gained premiership experience. But also another year of age. JayRod came on by leaps and bounds and shd be primed for action. Then there's exciting prospects of Mayuka, Isgrove. And if none of this works: Guly. All in all, the overall quality and depth of the squad is massively better than last time. If Rickie and Adam show up we could be amazing, even without another purchase. Though it will depend on Poch finding the right combo. I could see us trying a super-flexible 451 with the killer midfield of cork, spider, wanyama, Punch and Adam (+ Davis/Gaston/Isgrove as amazing backup). Upfront Rickie or JayRod. I predict 8th place. Can't wait.

With Davis, Hooiveld, Chambers, JWP, Punch, Mayuka and Lallana on the bench. Adam is a good player and bring him on for Ramirez at half-time or 60mins depending on the circumstances. IMO Adam will get better as the season progresses as he had the injury last season which knocked him back.

SRL drops to bench if new striker is signed. This is an attacking formation, however because we are in a worrying goal scoring rut I feel (against my usual instincts) that we should best aim for an away draw against a solid, formidable West Brom that heavied us out of games last season. We have big Vic now, but I would feel more confident with adding Cork or Steve Davis to make three in the middle. We should play to our current strengths, which is defending better. I am sorry, but I have no confidence in our strikers at present. If we go with this formation we will be throwing everything upfront and exposing our defence which currently is our strongest asset (surprisingly). This leaves Shaw and Clyne to be our attacking wings when opportunities arise. So Punch sadly has to be on the bench with Lallana imo. I would be more than happy with 0-0 for this first game of the season.

Window Cleaner Posted 4 August, 2013 Share Posted 4 August, 2013 (edited) the line up on the 17th may well depend on the international calls for the ridiculously placed round of pointless friendlies on the 14th. In theory we could have Gaston and Maya trekking off to Japan, Dejan in Lichtenstein (or is that Artur with Poland if so Croatia are somewhere else) plus any surprise calls for England,Scotland or France which are pretty unlikely. Still I suppose everyone else will be in the same boat except Utd and the Arse of course, they'll all come down with Berri Berri or Green Monkey Disease which will miraculously heal up just before kick off on Saturday.
