Another great prospect. Wonder if he'll push Clyne for a starting spot this season.

Anyone else remember that ball he played through for someone in last seasons pre-season? It was a Morgan@Ipswich-esque ball chipped over the top, for someone to run through on goal. Can't remember if it was converted.

Pochettino: "Calum has shown in his performances in pre-season that he is more than capable of performing at this level." #saintsfc

Suggests he is the back-up for Clyne.

I think it's a very sensible move for him (in conjunction with the coaching staff, I assume) to concentrate on the right-back position, as I would suggest he's a lot more likely to make a first-team breakthrough there than in the holding midfield role he's occupied in the League Cup appearances he's made for the first team, simply because of the strength and quality in depth we now have in that position, whereas with the departure of both Frazer Richardson and Danny Butterfield, we don't (didn't) really have a proper understudy for Nathaniel Clyne.

Very good player and no point holding him back by making him 3rd choice RB. Would not be worried to see him starting league games this year.

Must be said, when Sahw is fit we look very strong at full back - proper attacking full backs too.

Congratulations to the lad. What a phenomenal opportunity it would be to start the first game of the season. Look forward to seeing him if he does.

He plays at centre back for Saints.

Seems a bit odd to convert a midfielder to right back and then displace the right back to centre back. Maybe Chambers has more going forward.

Jack Stephens is (was?) primarily a right back. How does that work then?

They often chop and change players at youth level to ascertain their best position and to instill other qualities, Stephens is a CB though I believe

Good signing though, another blondey off the belt.

It's not odd Tim, all done to give you something to moan about.

Good move according to Alex Crook because "Clyne picks up injuries."

Missed a whopping 1 league game last season with injury.

Surely was more than one game? Unless he was suspended?

that link is 10 weeks old mate

So what? It is an indication that Saints may have been looking for right backs earlier in the summer - which was the point I was making. But now after 4 weeks of Chambers with the 1st team, Pochettino has decided he is good enough.

Really would like us to have three or four players that have come through the academy (manunited-like) all in the side pushing each other on and encouraging each to stay and take the club onwards and upwards. Best of luck to the lad. Look forward to seeing him up at the Hawthorns

From what I saw in Villach last week, this is well deserved.

Ditto for Palafrugell.

Jos was sat behind me in the stand, and going on his comments he was impressed with the way Calum was playing, especially his corners were very good too.

Anyone know if he has a bit of pace

Should have a decent pass on him, tall. If he has some pace and progresses at RB. Could do well

He's come on leaps and bounds in the last year. Looks a very accomplished player, more than capable of playing a squad role this year. If we're not signing competition at full back, the next best thing is to promote the youth to create the competition. Luckily for us, we continue to produce class youth players.

Youngsters to watch article in Daily Fail

Calum Chambers

Age: 18 Position: Right back

The 18-year-old has been promoted to the first team this summer and will challenge Nathaniel Clyne for the right-back position as well as offering options in midfield. At 6ft, he is a presence on the pitch and possesses good awareness. Played for England Under 19s last season and scored against the Faroe Islands and Turkey. Perhaps most similar to Kyle Walker because of his attacking flair.

Seem's a bright intellgent lad and played well in the pre-season games. No surpise then he was given a 4 year contract on return.Good competition for Nathanial Clyne at RT Bk. Well done Calum.

So who has watched our friendlies? Is this lad the real deal? From what I've heard and read it seems like it won't be long until he's challenging Clyne. However it's one thing to do it in a march that means nothing quite another to do it the rigours of the premier league. I've no opinion as never seen him play but he's one that has snuck in under the radar, not had the hype of Shaw, JWP, Stephens and Sinclair. What's the view on him mboarders that have seen him play?

I've only seen him in the friendlies. Decent enough, but not ready for the prem IMO. But hey, if NC wants half the squad academy we're gonna have to put up with that. They ain't all Luke Shaw.

You can tell that he didn't play RB from an early age, but he'll adjust to the position more with time. Only been playing there for a few years. Looks great going forward, slightly suspect defensively but has the right attributes to be a good RB. As cover for Clyne i'm not 100% sure, he'd probably benefit more from a year on loan at a Championship team than sitting on the bench for us.

Months would be more accurate.
