I think he may be the son of a very good ex Brading and Southern League goal keeper can't remember his Christian name.

An academy as prolific as ours will always have players that slip by the wayside, but end up having good careers for themselves.

This is pretty much a non-story to be honest.

So he's 23, left us in 2009 for Brentford and is now 'one for the future' at Cardiff. Sounds like a crushing loss.

Who else slipped through our fingers?

Dennis Wise...

Kevin Phillips (to later cost £3m), Andy Townsend spring to mind as well as the now-mentioned Dennis Wise

So Phillips and Wise are the only two so far then, and that's going back quite a way (and Phillips played at RB for us then iirc, so we can't really be blamed - similar to Shearer playing in goal for Newcastle before he came to us).

I think the original post probably ranks at the same level as Monk and Cranie who were fortunate enough to make it to the Premier League eventually

A local player we missed out on was Graham Roberts. Although I'm not sure of what stage of his career he was closely linked with Saints.

Others - Steve Guppy, and Darren Anderton.

Correct. Started his career at Welling.

Townsend didn't slip through the net, he just dint want to stay.

If I recall correctly Graham Roberts seemed to enjoy sticking one on us, it must have hurt being dropped.

Talking of Welling anyone going to watch the under 21's there tonight.

I slipped through the net too. My problem was similar to Ramirez in that the players I was playing with were sh*te and I was on a totally different wavelength to them so I too looked just as bad. The reality is that I am good enough to be a full international if I was playing with better players. Saints loss and Harlow Hill vets gain.

I was (What I believe to be) reliably informed a few years ago, that a certain Gareth Bale was the last of that years batch of apprentices to be offered a contract, with a now long gone member of the academy advising against it and leaving Lowe to make the ultimate decision.

That's also how I recall it, Andy wanted to play in the middle whereas Chris Nicholl was playing him wide. Norwich recruited him as a CM. Graham Roberts was ex-Weston Park Boys (now Grove Academy?) although hard to know if he was any more fired up than usual as he was no shrinking violet! Met his match in player-manager Souness when he went north of the border to Rangers in the mid-late 80s.

We haven't missed out on many which is remarkable, Newcastle seemed to miss out on a whole generation at Wallsend Boys Club! We could have included Le Saux to our list of products but IIRC there was some of kind of restriction on signing him and MLT and if so, we definately made the right call there! Anderton I guess but that was more Bob Higgins, a disgruntled ex-Saints youth coach IIRC who took him to Pompey (a reverse of the Chamberlains I guess). Kevin Phillips admitted that he was nowhere near good enough as a young full back and only coverted to a striker at Baldock Town.

On the subject of Simon Moore: Brentford are my local team and I saw perhaps 9-10 games last season with Moore in goal. He is a very accomplished goalkeeper, certainly has the potential to improve and does the basics well. He's a big loss for Brentford and really grew as a player last season which has drawn attention to him. He has an issue with distribution at times but what keeper doesn't? He'd have been a good signing for us. When it comes to performing at the top level, he played against Chelsea twice last year and I don't remember him doing much wrong.

I played against Graham Roberts at school.....cripes he was hard as nails even in those days.

Funnily enough I was ata Brading game last year with a mate who lives there and we were talking with

Moores relation and he was saying about all the interest he was attracting from other clubs.

Not sure we should lose much sleep over this one. Cropper looks decent.

Graham Roberts was a Southampton schoolboy from Weston Park..

Leg injury at the wrong time and not picked up by Saints , Pompey or Bournemouth.

Played at Dorchester and Weymouth to whom Spurs paid 30 grand...The rest is history...

Graham has millions of shares with bookmakers etc...

Darren Anderton was Bitterne Park and not picked up by us... but by Pompey and sold to Spurs..The rest is history..
