MP - 'World Class'

I wouldn't get too caught up with trying to define World Class. I'm sure all Lallana meant to say is that MP is very good and everyone is currently enjoying playing for him and the team dynamic he is fostering.

you mean they're over the moon rather than sick as parrots ?

Ricky Villa, Ardiles, Zabaleta, Aguerro, Mascherano, Guittierez did Ok though.

Don't you think its odd that not one player has followed him?

not at all, then again I don't know how many of his ex players fit into our recruitment criteria. Banega is an ex of his isn't he ?

Perhaps that will come off some time or other; How many of his old Espanyol players would be good enough for us also, think the

margin is pretty fine there. Not at all sure that Espanyol are a better side than Saints actually are.

In this neck of the woods, the phrase "world-class" is often applied to some aspect of Toronto. Its use usually sounds like a form of rather desperate boosterism - if you keep on saying it loud enough, then it must be true. But if something is world-class, then you don't need to keep calling attention to the fact.

Here is definition of world class i have just invented, i think it's pretty accurate!

You have to imagine ur on Family Fortunes & Vernon Kay has asked 100 people Who Is Best ____ In The World. Ur answer don't have to be top answer, it don't even have to be on board, it just mustn't be one of the dumb answers that makes the audience lols

I.e. If it was Who Is Best Left Back In World, and you was "Ashley Cole", audience might not agree but they would sit quietly on their hands (World Class). If you was "Danny Fox" they would be rolling in aisles, i.e. Not World Class!

hope this helps

Can't knock it, really good, positive article. Will be able to judge if MP is "World Class" at the end of this season though.

Thoroughly agree that we shall know at the end of the season. We have had a lot of talk, but to date, the results at the end of the matches don't show his tactics and choice of players are world class.

I think that limits it a bit. Seems to mean there can only be 2 or 3 world class forwards at the time, out of thousands and thousands playing.

In playing terms I just think it's the 10 or so top players in that position. Can't compare positions at all as they're so specialised at the top level.

With managers though, I think it's probably winning a top league that does it. IMO anyway. If we're talking about the elite, then winning the dutch/portuguese league etc doesn't cut it, or a cup as there's a lot of luck involved. Even winning the CL can be lucky, as I don't believe Di Matteo has proven anything. He just let a strong squad get on with things with a huge influence from senior players. Same way Avram Grant nearly won the CL there despite being a pretty poor manager.

So Ferguson, Wenger, Mourinho, that's probably it for the PL, although I don't know much about Man City's manager.

No, that's not what I said. I was clear it was "feasibly".

Clearly there are only 2-3 strikers in the world who are the very best - but being world class just means that you could be in the team (e.g. Messi is injured, but it's okay let's put on Neymar....) and obviously it's contestable who you'd put in the team. I'm just saying it has to be credible that you'd put them in the team. Robin van Persie is world class, as is Neymar, as is Messi. Probably also Suarez. Maybe Rooney at a stretch. But Rickie Lambert - much as I love him - just clearly isn't.

So, we're maybe looking at 10 or so strikers, 15 or so attacking midfielders, 15 or so "defensive midfielders", 8 or ten full backs, 15 or so centre backs and 3 or 4 goalkeepers. So, about 65-70 world class players all in all. (obviously the positions "bleed" a bit...but this is a broad tally)

Same basic priciple goes for managers IMO.

Could this man feasibly manage the best team in the world?

Mourinho = yes, Ferguson = yes, Wenger = probably yes. Pochettino = definitely not at the moment, no way. Adkins = no. Again, we're probably only looking at 10 or 12 managers. Only a few nutters would argue beyond that list of 10-12 and throw in a different name that they would ideally want to manage their team. (no doubt, someone somewhere names Harry Redknapp as their absolutely ideal first chocie manager...but they are clearly mental).

Holloway, Hughes, di canio, fat Sam, Steve Bruce?

Not so sure

What has MP actually done to be classed as better than Allardyce? Or Mark Hughes for that matter.

MP is just someone who might do well. Others have actually done it.

Allardyce finished above us last season, easily. He finished 6th, 8th, 7th in concecutive seasons not long ago. If MP does that most on here will be over the moon.

Clearly won't make him world class in the eyes of Delldays though.

Nice article and from the videos and pictures team spirit seems to be good.

The key point though I think is about the preparation and our pre-season, whilst other clubs are off promoting themselves around the world playing on terrible pitches in asia our team are hard at work away from the limelight.

This completely, I cant believe the likes of Man U, city etc playing in 40degree heat on ****e pitches as their prep for the coming season

A year ago some people were indignant that Adkins was the next great British manager, could be the new Alex Ferguson, definitely going to be England manager one day and will probably be wanted be Liverpool, Spurs when they look for a new boss. The 'in Adkins we trust' mantra was regularly trotted out. Yet now he's a clueless Bumpkin who was out of depth. despite doing no better Pochettino is now hailed as world class manager better than Adkins or career wise no better than a host of other managers the mugs on here write off as being terrible.
