Some of you may have limited sympathy with big oil, and I can understand that, but the way US institutions have closed ranks to screw BP is outrageous. BP is being bled to death by fraudulent claims of compensation, and now it emerges that Halliburton destroyed critical evidence which may have shown its culpability when requested for the various litigation cases.

And in the meantime, has Exxon actually paid any of its Exxon Valdez liabilities, or have the continual appeals postponed it forever or got it reduced to nothing ?

Makes me so angry...

Whilst BP is a uk company , I suspect the defective work was done by USA contractors?

The work was not only undertaken by 2 US companies, but BP is actually not even a UK company anymore - it is 40% US-owned - but in the eyes of the very limited Obama administration it is historically British and therefore a much easier scapegoat.

I hope you forgive me when I say I won't lose much sleep over this.

You might want to reconsider that if you have a private pension plan. The whole system is largely propped up by dividends from UK oil company stock.

The more I read about Halliburton, the most revulsed I become...

Wasn't it Rumsfeld that was in bed with Halliburton? Probably still is.

You're probably thinking of **** Cheney (former U.S. V-P), who was Chairman of the Board and C.E.O. of Halliburton from 1995-2000.

Halliburton did very well out of Iraq. Didn't even have to bid for a lot of the contracts. Fancy that, as Private Eye says.

What a shock that is. Big business, that bankrolled two election campaigns, doing well out of a war that needn't been waged.

Still, it made Iraq lovely and safe.

Glad BP are getting screwed, alot of people would have been effected by this both directly and indirectly. If there is any doubt in a case it should favour the people making the claim.

What a truly dumb short-sighted attitude.

Not really, these massive oil companies need to have a deterrent to make sure they don't f*ck the environment up. I would say a selfish concern for your pension was a short sighted attitude.

I dont have a private UK pension...

But if you cant see that a large amount of people in the UK are going to suffer massive hardship in their old age (if fact, at any age considering the amount of corporate tax BP pays) if the Obama administration is permitted to bleed BP to death, then I cant help you.

Whether BP exists or not, some oil company will be out there, taking those cost-saving risks..

I expect my pension will be effected but i still think it's right that BP get stung for as much as possble.

Oil companies will always take risks to make the most profit because that is all they care about - they don't give a damn about the environment. But as with every company they will have to balance the risk with potential costs so the bigger the penalty for failure the better IMO.

If you witnessed and/or were affected first hand by the impact of Deepwater Horizon on the local Sea Food industry, environment and economy, I’m sure you would have a different opinion.....(and by local i mean an area at least 1/4 the size of England)

No doubt people were affected and deserve compensation. However, there appears to be widespread fraud in the claims (ie. People claiming for multiples of their loss), that coupled with the "blame the British company" attitude means BP can feel hard done by.

Oil is a part of life, so unless you've never complained about the price of petrol or sat on a plastic chair, it's hard to be morally clean about Big Oil.

Yep this. Always amused by the moral cowardice / hypocrisy such stories expose.

It's not hard at all, I prefer oil production to be as safe for the environment as possible and am happy to pay more for it.
