Whipping boy 2013/14

Was just about to say this.

He blocked me on Twitter because I told him that our OS said Ramirez and Yoshida wouldn't play tonight, whilst he said the same thing prefixed by 'I understand' about three hours after it was in the OS.

Best was when his Star article said we had bid 15m for Nainggolan and then he tweeted to deny it the same morning it was published!

Nearly everything he tweeted tonight could've been tweeted by people at home looking at the official saints tweets.

Oh well, he works for his own agency so over there on a jolly. His Lambert quotes will probably be from the Saints Player interview. Bit of a joker really.

Think he will be outstanding for us - saw a lot of French football last season and he was brilliant.

A new hero for Saints I predict. Dont think we will concede many next season - him and Fonte will be a good partnership imho

I noticed that. Laughable

itll be Gaston, even if he plays well I'm pretty sure some people have already made their minds up on him.

Pretty sure you're right. He's also going to be knackered from playing for two successive summers so when he doesn't start early in the season people will start jumping to conclusions... even though plenty of managers have chosen to rest "summer players" to give them a break, and he'll want to be peaking at the end of the season when the World Cup is looming.

When has he played two successive summers?

But with so many black players for the mongs to target, how will their little minds cope ?

is your "location" aimed directly at Alan Brazil? If not, would you mind please contacting him on behalf of me, so I don't have to mutter "premierleague" under my breath every 5 minutes when listening to him. Mucho appreciationo

The "whipping boy", of course, is another type of scapegoat. The interesting idea for both is that they are not actually guilty of anything; they are punished as an expedience - they pay for the sins of others.

It's not quite the same in footballing terms ; one or two players are often identified as the "weak links" in a team - because of continuing deficiencies in their performances. Their mistakes are noticed and criticised. But the "scapegoat" tendency is always there: you recognise that it invariably follows a dispiriting loss. Instead of holding a significant portion of the team to blame, the simple-minded like to latch on to their favourite bête-noire.

There really is some important psychological issues at play here, and the current "whipping boy" often tells you more about the critics than you might imagine.

Quite recently. Last summer (Olympics) and this summer (Confederations Cup).
He hasn't played any football for a month and the last time he did it was 60 odd minutes against Tahiti. He had well over a month of no football between his last game for us and his first for Uruguay, he's played about the equivalent of 2 and a half games of football since the end of April. I think he's a class player with bags of potential, but there should be no reason for him being tired out.

A month is nothing for a young player, and he will have had to keep to match fitness leading up to the Confeds. He's had far, far, far less rest than any of his team mates.

Tired no. Two disrupted pre seasons - yes.

A month isn't "nothing", it's what most top young internationals get. He would not have had the mental and physical drain of playing regularly, which is what most players say they really need a break from.

I'm going for Pochettino, get off to anything but a flyer and it'll be quickly pointed out that his record is actually a bit gash so far.

Im going for this too, do you think his record is gash so far then?

Throw in injuries and bereavement and I'd say he's had other drains on his life. Anyway, this is all down to fitness and day to day training, which the guys at Southampton know a lot more about than we do.
