Saint Without a Halo Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 looks like Schalke are playing a more pressing game than us !
dubai_phil Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 OK bored now off to watch telly night y'all Safe trip home Andy & Alps
Colinjb Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 looks like Schalke are playing a more pressing game than us ! They do look sharp. I'm more then happy to put it down to them being further along their pre-season prep then us for now. We really faded in the second half..... I'm sure I read somewhere that Poch was essentially sending the team into the game a little tired in an effort to work them hard to ensure they are as fit as possible for the new season, so this cannot be a surprise on that basis.
Roo1976 Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 we dont seem to be able to turn and hold the ball up when we get across the halfway line no composure it seems early day tbh but lovren looks like he lacks pace and fox keeps lumping the ball too long without hitting a runner...........mayuka looks lost...........just my early thoughts.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Well a lot of work still to do over the next three weeks from the 2nd half I saw!
doubleonothing Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Strange how Boruc didn't play. Not played as often as I would expect our first choice keeper to.
Colinjb Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Had that Penalty been given and Rickie not missed a sitter that would have been a very different result. Just nice to see some football again to be fair!
Super_Saint Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Let's not forget Schalke are a top 4 German side.
monosaint Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 We looked the better team in the first. Chambers and Shaw were v.good and Lovren and Hooiveld were in control at the back. We made a lot of changes in the second half and it showed. We keep working and get a couple of good signings in (Striker and Defender) then we will be OK..
Bewildered Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Good first half, **** defending, goalkeeping second half, struggled to create all game. We can spend as much as we like on a striker, but if the supply doesn't improve it won't make too much of a difference. Wanyama, Puncheon, Chambers were impressive Lovren, Fonte, Davis & Gazzaniga were poor
Crab Lungs Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 My god, their under age totty is fugly!!! My mind wandered to Fritzl when they started showing all those U16's...
supergoose Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 (edited) Why are they playing Tom Jones? Its not unusual. Edited 24 July, 2013 by supergoose
Turkish Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are.

Agreed we need a striker to offer some threat and another defender to tighten up the back
hutch Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 So it would seem our best 11 at the moment is Boruc Clyne Yoshida Lovren Shaw Cork Schneiderlin Wanyama Ramirez Rodriguez & Lambert with Chambers Hooiveld S.Davis JWP Puncheon Lallana & Isgrove in contention.
Batman Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 thought we looked good first half. Puncheon a threat most of game shaw good chambers good lovren good first half lambert missed a sitter not so good 2nd half throughout

forever a red and white Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Didn't watch much but in terms of more creativity, hopefully a more settled Ramirez will be able to give us a bit more of that.
shirleysfc Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Lovren looked good at times and a bit lazy at others
Saint_clark Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are. Reverse the result and I guess it's just meaningless again.
saintalan Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 For those of us too nervous to download the software needed to watch the stream at work can someone please confirm the shape and the positioning. If this is the shape of the front four then who are the $?: * $ * $ For future reference all of the Wiziwig links today were all Flash, no need to download anything.
shirleysfc Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Reverse the result and I guess it's just meaningless again. Reverse the result and we'll be qualifying for the Champions League. Obviously.
JRM Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are. but Man Utd lost in Japan and everyone knows Japanese are rubbish just look at Tadanari Lee so they'll finish below us as things stand.
captainchris Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 So it would seem our best 11 at the moment is Boruc Clyne Yoshida Lovren Shaw Cork Schneiderlin Wanyama Ramirez Rodriguez & Lambert with Chambers Hooiveld S.Davis JWP Puncheon Lallana & Isgrove in contention. Laughable
sad saints fan Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Missed the first half but from comments on here Isgrove looked to be a real handful, hope he gets another go Saturday.
dan abnormal Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 we were the better team 1st half imo. i thought wanyama ,isgrove, punch and chambers all looked good. i wonder if chambers or isgrove have a serious role to play in the plans of poch this season apart from a few moments in the 2nd half we were generally poor, lovrens defending for the 2nd was very poor. we did lack that little moment of creativity, something which i hope adam or gaston could provide.
BlakeySFC Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Result meaningless. Good effort from the lads, running a CL team ragged in the 1st half is a very good sign.
captainchris Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 We have never played well with Fox in the team.... Why did GAzzaniga feel the need to pass to his defenders by chipping the ball at head height to them?
Batman Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 We have never played well with Fox in the team.... Why did GAzzaniga feel the need to pass to his defenders by chipping the ball at head height to them? that is what he does
DuncanRG Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Only watched the first half, sounds like I made a decent choice. Can take heart from the fact we competed with a Champions League team who are much closer to match fitness than we are.
The9 Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 looks better than schalkes kit Doesn't, by any stretch of the imagination.
Batman Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Doesn't, by any stretch of the imagination. a green and black kit. please
The9 Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 To be fair, Lovren did hesitate. Even though he made the initial block, he was pretty rubbish in defending the next cross in. You can't excuse someone for making a mistake just because they made a decent block a moment ago! Ultimately, that block now means nothing! I still think Gazzaniga should have done a little better though. But it's hard to see as the replay isn't great. ....AND it's only a pre-season, not to get too carried away about! Just nice to see us playing again. Lovren was entirely to blame for the second goal, block or not, he pulled his foot away from a potential clearance having misjudged it and the Schalke player scored as a direct result. He did also hit two or three laaaarvely crossfield passes though.
The9 Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are. Well for a start we don't play in Germany...
Black Sea Saint Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 oh well, only a run out. Thought Wanyama looked very impressive, comfortable on the ball, quick feet, looks like the real deal.
Ed Rooney Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 We have never played well with Fox in the team.... Why did GAzzaniga feel the need to pass to his defenders by chipping the ball at head height to them? Because Gazzaniga is ****
Glasgow_Saint Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Just going to watch the 90 again..... Will comment later
Window Cleaner Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 watched the whole game and would admit to be just slightly concerned because I saw the same old same old. Nothing at the sharp end and errors I'd kick U15s out of the team for at the back.
RonManager Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 A good performance for out first real competitive match, marred only by two individual errors. Fitness wise we lasted very well against a CL team who are basically ready to start their season. Against Besiktas I'd like to see our strongest 11 start and only make subs if necessary - ie. treat it like a league match.
Super_Saint Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are. I hope you're joking. 1. Schalke are a top 4 team in Germany and play Champions League football. 2. This was a pre-season game. 3. Our second half squad featured a lot of players that won't make the first team. The first goal was a miscommunication between Fonte and Davis, neither are starters. The second goal Gazza conceded at his near post, who is arguably third in line. I'm not saying we will make the top 8, but this game has no relevance on our final position this season. I should probably reiterate that this was a pre-season game.
Mowgli Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 I only came on this forum to cheer myself up and I wasn't disappointed. Overall I thought the first half was pretty even. As others have said, chambers Isgrove and puncheon all stood out. We do have a few players who consistently fail to perform to their potential in friendlies (SLR, Lallana and Fonte to name but three). The whole idea of these friendlies is to develop match status. That's partly about fitness but more about focus and integration in units. Overall a decent workout.
ottery st mary Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 Morgan in the middle with Victor and Cork... Ramirez is definitely needed in behind Lambert and Jay Rod.. Not discounting Punch and Lallana.....may have to play 13:rolleyes: Boruc with a back four of Clyne, Yoshida ,Lovren and Shaw.. Back up Fonte, Jos. Davis S. JWP, Chambers, Isgrove Davis K. Definitely League place 8/9 with 2 new players waiting to sign..
Saint_clark Posted 24 July, 2013 Posted 24 July, 2013 a green and black kit. please I actually quite like that combo.

Point 3 the same players making the same mistakes. Have we learnt nothing?!!
