PRE-SEASON: Schalke 04 vs Southampton - (18:00 KO)

looks like Schalke are playing a more pressing game than us !

They do look sharp. I'm more then happy to put it down to them being further along their pre-season prep then us for now. We really faded in the second half..... I'm sure I read somewhere that Poch was essentially sending the team into the game a little tired in an effort to work them hard to ensure they are as fit as possible for the new season, so this cannot be a surprise on that basis.

we dont seem to be able to turn and hold the ball up when we get across the halfway line no composure it seems early day tbh but lovren looks like he lacks pace and fox keeps lumping the ball too long without hitting a runner...........mayuka looks lost...........just my early thoughts.

We looked the better team in the first. Chambers and Shaw were v.good and Lovren and Hooiveld were in control at the back. We made a lot of changes in the second half and it showed. We keep working and get a couple of good signings in (Striker and Defender) then we will be OK..

Good first half, **** defending, goalkeeping second half, struggled to create all game. We can spend as much as we like on a striker, but if the supply doesn't improve it won't make too much of a difference.

Wanyama, Puncheon, Chambers were impressive

Lovren, Fonte, Davis & Gazzaniga were poor

Agreed we need a striker to offer some threat and another defender to tighten up the back

So it would seem our best 11 at the moment is Boruc Clyne Yoshida Lovren Shaw Cork Schneiderlin Wanyama Ramirez Rodriguez & Lambert with Chambers Hooiveld S.Davis JWP Puncheon Lallana & Isgrove in contention.

For those of us too nervous to download the software needed to watch the stream at work can someone please confirm the shape and the positioning.

If this is the shape of the front four then who are the $?:

$

For future reference all of the Wiziwig links today were all Flash, no need to download anything.

I hope people now realise how far off being a top 8 team we are.

but Man Utd lost in Japan and everyone knows Japanese are rubbish just look at Tadanari Lee so they'll finish below us as things stand.

we were the better team 1st half imo. i thought wanyama ,isgrove, punch and chambers all looked good. i wonder if chambers or isgrove have a serious role to play in the plans of poch this season

apart from a few moments in the 2nd half we were generally poor, lovrens defending for the 2nd was very poor. we did lack that little moment of creativity, something which i hope adam or gaston could provide.

To be fair, Lovren did hesitate. Even though he made the initial block, he was pretty rubbish in defending the next cross in. You can't excuse someone for making a mistake just because they made a decent block a moment ago! Ultimately, that block now means nothing!

I still think Gazzaniga should have done a little better though. But it's hard to see as the replay isn't great.

....AND it's only a pre-season, not to get too carried away about! Just nice to see us playing again.

Lovren was entirely to blame for the second goal, block or not, he pulled his foot away from a potential clearance having misjudged it and the Schalke player scored as a direct result.

He did also hit two or three laaaarvely crossfield passes though.

A good performance for out first real competitive match, marred only by two individual errors.

Fitness wise we lasted very well against a CL team who are basically ready to start their season.

Against Besiktas I'd like to see our strongest 11 start and only make subs if necessary - ie. treat it like a league match.

I hope you're joking.

1. Schalke are a top 4 team in Germany and play Champions League football.

2. This was a pre-season game.

3. Our second half squad featured a lot of players that won't make the first team. The first goal was a miscommunication between Fonte and Davis, neither are starters. The second goal Gazza conceded at his near post, who is arguably third in line.

I'm not saying we will make the top 8, but this game has no relevance on our final position this season. I should probably reiterate that this was a pre-season game.

I only came on this forum to cheer myself up and I wasn't disappointed. Overall I thought the first half was pretty even. As others have said, chambers Isgrove and puncheon all stood out. We do have a few players who consistently fail to perform to their potential in friendlies (SLR, Lallana and Fonte to name but three). The whole idea of these friendlies is to develop match status. That's partly about fitness but more about focus and integration in units. Overall a decent workout.

Morgan in the middle with Victor and Cork...

Ramirez is definitely needed in behind Lambert and Jay Rod..

Not discounting Punch and Lallana.....may have to play 13:rolleyes:

Boruc with a back four of Clyne, Yoshida ,Lovren and Shaw..

Back up Fonte, Jos. Davis S. JWP, Chambers, Isgrove Davis K.

Definitely League place 8/9 with 2 new players waiting to sign..:D

Point 1 - arsenal or spurs, yes? The sort if team we are going to have to compete with..

Point 2.- and?

Point 3 the same players making the same mistakes. Have we learnt nothing?!!
