New RB?

As above medical issues which meant after further trip to Rome specialist...Sunderland withdrew on advice given.:

They withdrew as they couldn't wait for him to fully recover. The medical advice was positive:

"Sunderland requested permission to subject Gino Peruzzi to a final evaluation at the Villa Stuart Sporting Clinic in Rome, which is directed by the renowned Professor Pier Paolo Mariani.

"The evaluation had a positive result with Prof Mariani recommending specific work on the affected muscle area."

No real concern IMO.

Clyne is class and will be first choice RB all season IMO.

If fit. And not suspended. And if he doesn't fatigue, tire or lose form.

Having a replacement doesn't hurt. I'm surprised we don't look at the loan market though. I know loans aren't Cortese's favourite thing, we've not had any since League One except for Jos* (who we then went and signed anyway), but as short term cover, without taking away the opportunities from the up and coming youngsters, it's a 'fix'.

Or, signing a talented lower league right back that would be happy just to be in the Premier League, fighting as much as he can to become first choice right back. And as has been mentioned, Trippier fits that role. It keeps Clyne on his toes too!

*EDIT: I forgot Falque, but does he really count? :-)

Falque counts maybe to caution against relying on loan players. Full backs are so integral to how we play I think a permanent signing, ideally one that can cover both flanks, is a good call.

Never heard of Peruzzi before, don't follow South American football too closely. Looking over his record he looks like he'd be a good option. Think we need a 'clogger' type fullback though, Clyne and Shaw are good defenders but their lack of height and strength can be shown up at times.

Pleased if we get a rb (maybe a CB that can do a job at rb would be better unless we get another CB too). Just a striker and wide player to go and we are set.

That's what I'd choose too. A CB that can play at right back comfortably (have we ever had one? Wayne Thomas perhaps), a striker and an attacking midfielder or winger. I'd actually say we could do without the extra CB/RB, but we definitely do need another attacking option, even if it's only the one and it's not a striker. (I do think we'll get more than one in though. Still a long time to go yet.

the idea of putting a centre back at full back fills me with dread. By and large it doesn't work IMO (Stoke game apart). Maybe for a one off game, but if Clyne gets injured we might need someone that can play 15-20 games. Sam Byram perhaps?

Thats why I said someone who could do a job there.

people would and have argued that Yoshida can do a job there. I'd argue he can't.

I agree. Remember the Fulham game. In the second half they realised Yoshida was uncomfortable at right back and fully exploited that weakness. Virtually every attack came down our right. If we had to use him there for a run of games we'd be in trouble, its one thing to fill in there for 10 minutes at the end of a game quite another to be used three regularly.

I thought Peach expected a story in the papers today, but seems pretty quiet on that one....

I thought we all agreed after Peaches article on MLT he was a terrible, sh*t stirring jounrnalist with an agenda against Saints who didn't know what he was doing and made things up from snippets he got on twitter?
