For me, if saints sign a 15m+ striker SRL will become a bit player for us this season, then next season will struggle to make the bench, I think for all Rickie has done for us, we owe him the choice of what he is happiest with

I would hope with Rickie only recently signing a new contract, that it shows NC and MP feel he has a big role to play for the coming season and beyond.

Considering his age when he signed the new contract and the length of it as well, I wouldn't be surprised if it was made with the view that both parties (Saints and Lambert) accept his role will clearly decrease over time but Lambert (like Davis before him) received long-term deal out of loyalty and thanks for services already rendered. It is becoming quite common in sports. If we do bring in another striker who does significantly cut Lambert's minutes, it remains to be seen whether Lambert will accept this new role or seek to play elsewhere.

Would you sell if they offered £8 mill?????

To me he is priceless as he holds a place in every Saints fans heart, but that is serious cash for a 31 yo

READING FC could be ready to launch a bid to sign Southampton striker Rickie Lambert.

Royals boss Nigel Adkins is believed to be preparing an audacious swoop for the 31-year-old talisman who played under him at St Mary's.

Lambert, valued at around £8 million, has bagged an impressive 93 goals in 170 league appearances for the Saints and former manager Adkins is keen to bring him to the Madejski Stadium to boost his side's firepower.

if we sell lambert, that is two strikers needed who are able to get double figures in league goals for starters

Just cannot see the club selling the talisman and certainly cant see him dropping down a league after just one highly successful season in the top flight

Worst side in the league and it was only good fortune we were winning that game until Forest had a man sent off. Then we did what was expected.

He will roll out some stat that they weren't the worst side in the league, but at the time, they were, hadn't scored at home for like 3 months.

I largely agree with you. ms pap would goad me about Rickie's impact whenever he was unavailable for selection, and she was mostly right.

The boys who do the Saints podcast say "Rickie's basically our front". Can't really argue with that, and getting someone with all of those attributes (or better) will be a tall order.

Why does it matter if they were the "worst side in the league" or had a man sent off in the second half? Saints played well in that game, which was the point I was responding to. Plus both strikers scored.

We really didn't play that well that day, we could've been 3 or 4-1 down at half time, as soon as Chambers was sent off we dominated.

now the $64,000 question (sorry did I hear £8 million mentioned)....is can we really expect RL to get another 15 goals next season?

does anyone expect him to get more than he did last season ?.or is it the right time to sell? Reading have their own Russian billionaire who is keen to get back to the Prem. ASAP

Audacious is the word for Adkins' bid, but why not? Rickie will still get a cart load of goals in the Championship and who knows...Reading might get back up on the rebound.

I think that we'll never again hear that sort of figure for RL. OF COURSE, He's already got legend status and I'd be sorry to see him go ........but time passes quickly when you're a Prem. footballer and over 30

...and if we do sell, it will help to balance the books on transfers.

Who saw Grant Holt leaving Norwich for relegated Wigan?...

Will be a very similar story for any striker who has mostly played in the lower leagues, has one or two vaguely successful years in the Prem, has previously got a team up from the Championship, has a year left on their contract and is over 30 but under 35. The Prem club will want to sell for whatever they can get which isn't the "nothing" they'll get a year later, and if they want to stay in the Prem they'd better be signing players who are better than their over 30 player who has already peaked.

not sure I can recall a single game since he signed where we've played well without him in the side.

Can't argue with the bit about playing well without, but I've always put that down to building the system to play to his strengths, which is not necessarily the best way to get the best performance out of a different XI players.

Looked like it to me, it's not as if Saints have had any kind of problem employing shedloads of players who are no longer up to the level they were signed to play at, we're still paying Johnno Forte and Lee Barnard for a start.

Just out of interest, do you describe Lambert's 2012/13 season for us 'vaguely successful'? I know you've described yourself as 'ambivalent' towards him in the past.

I no longer discuss certain players.

Don't we have exactly the same rumour, every, single, year? Yet, every, single, year - he's still here come September?

So yeah, he'll still be here in September and probably until he retires.

he wont be sold. that is quite clear

The only two strikers of note we have are Rickie and Jay.

Rickie is by far the most prolific and is central to how we play. Jay is still learning but is not the same kind of player, if anything at their best they are an excellent foil for each other.

To significantly improve our striking options we would need to spend £20m upwards.... really..... And I would suggest those kind of players do not yet see us as a readily attractive destination.

There is no logical reason to sell Rickie, even for 8 million. As someone on the Reading forum stated.... how he plays will not necessarily be undermined by his age. He relies on physical presence, not agility and speed. Keep him, use him.

Wouldn't want him to go, but £8m at 32....sure Cortese would consider it especially if rumours of us wanting to sell him for £4m last season....

However I think he's far too valuable to us than £8m, and he is a Saints legend. Personally think he would be a huge miss should be accept it.

Have I missed something? All this talk of £8m, is this not just a figure that some fool has plucked out of thin air?

Yeah, same here. Where has that figure come from? Source us up, bee-hatches.
