I was sent this yesterday after a colleague successfully claimed their £520 and rang the tax office this afternoon and have been told I qualify and am being sent a form to complete and will recieve my £520 within 28 days

Apparently only a very small % of employers applied this when calculating tax codes, as it was never advitised by the IR so the majority of PAYE employees never recieved the benefit. It is not as common for those that "Self Access", but worth a phone call.

Unclaimed Children's Tax Allowance for 2002/03

The year before Tax Credits were introduced there was a different non-means tested allowance

available which was never advertised by the Inland Revenue.

It is called the Children's Tax Allowance for the Year 2002/03.

You can still claim this tax allowance before the 31 January 2009 deadline.

You need to phone HMRC on 0845 302 1437 and ask them to check whether you have already

received this allowance and, if not, enquire as to what action you need to take.

You are eligible to claim £520 allowance if:

You have a child born between 6 April 1986 and 5 April 2003

The child lived with you for all or part of 2002/2003

You worked and paid tax for all or part of 2002/2003

You or your partner earned £6,000 plus in the 2002/2003 tax year

You are eligible for the £1,040 allowance if:

If you can answer yes to the four questions above, and

One of your children was born between 6 April 2002 and 5 April 2003

Well I phoned but for some reason they have no tax code for me for that year!!! Have to write in to find out. Also dont know if it was claimed under my ex. they wont tell me but I need to give them as much info as I can and they will look into it. I cant ask him to ring as if we dont speak and if he found out we were owed money he would grab the lot. So fingers crossed.

I take it you'll be giving him half if you are successful?

You will have to call your local tax office to find if you are able to claim this as the number above has now been disabled.

Looks like that your partner of the time will be contacted regardless of if you want them to be or not and you also have to supply their NI number on the claim form.

Also although it says it is not means tested you will loss £1 of the tax credit for every £15 of higher rate tax paid in that year.

Having said all that it doesn't appear that I had this allowance applied to my tax code for this year so I am going to put in a claim although it might be fruitless based on how much higher rate tax I might of paid that year.

The link to the form is here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/11ctc.pdf

They are not actually contacted, its up to him to put in a claim.... if he doesnt know about it....! unless of course he already had it, but they said they will let me know before trying to claim half back from him because of the problems it will cause

Neither of us were higher rate tax payers which is good. As i dont speak to him I dont have to give his NI number they said that they will find it themselves

I take it you'll be giving him half if you are successful?

Of course ;)

OK. I am only going by the notes on the form which I linked.

I hope you are right, my money grabbing ex has had more than enough out of me without having to split this with her as well.

Is there an earnings limit on being able to claim?

Yes. The article I put up is incorrect as it is means tested or works in much the same way as the current tax credits. Having been told I qualified and duly completing the form, I recieved a letter saying I paid over the tax threshold that reduces the credit by blah blah blah and therefore was owed fook all. I am of course delighted for the those that got some money :smt005

Fooked up tax system
