I think it's obvious.

That Cortese is struggling to get these other couple of players we need.

I did find it funny that Pooch said we will get them on our terms and when we want etc... but you feel that the (so called targets of Leandre, Banega , Stoch, Osvaldo as fading.

Is Cortese feeling the pressure like the other clubs or does he have a gem up his sleeve as he is waiting for Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd etc to get some players in to release ours?

I disagree. Don't think much is 'obvious'. We may get our ambitious targets, we may alternatively instead opt for a second choice player, or we may opt to buy nobody if we can't attract a big name.

No evidence we are struggling, just that we have very ambitious targets and aren't taking the expected types of bland mid-ranking premier players that we used to ten years ago (anyone for a Kenton, McCann, or Higginbotham?)

The Fabregas thing went on for years and that was Arsenal and Barcelona, it's not easy when you're in the top bracket, Chelsea Spurs and Man U are all wrangling and we're part of it now, so learn a little patience

Transfer season is split into 2 waves, I think we are just about to hit the 2nd half.

1st half - Fantasy land - all players, agents and clubs put out ridiculous numbers and over estimate their value and only the very rich (a la PSG/Monaco/City/Madrid) pay them to close the deals.

2nd half- Reality - After fantasy land is over the people left on the shelf realise they aren't going to get picked up in the 1st wave and start to reassess the offers tabled as they realise that the

demand wasn't as they originally perceived.

I suspect we have put maybe 2 to 3 solid offers on the table and have said they expire end July whilst we go away and begin pre-season. Therefore as we go into the 2nd wave the targets and clubs are reviewing these offers and begin to negotiate with the clubs as the pendulum swings back to the clubs who put the offers in as people have a fear of missing out so look to close the deals, this is where NC would have the stronger hand.

If anyone's struggling it's Arsenal. Before I went on holiday in June they were "close" to signing Higuain. That's still not complete. Sanogo is a decent free transfer but when media reports state that Wenger has a big budget to play with, and they haven't signed anyone for money, Arsenal fans must be spitting blood.

Bed wetting. Most of the clubs going for big signings have seen them drag on.

There's no need to panic anyway. Even if we'd made no signings I think we'd have come back stronger than last season after a full pre-season with MP. Chill out.

You forgot to add the world-beating, would-be marque signing you saw being shown around SMS a week or so ago.

I know what's obvious, sunshine....

Still a month until the start of the season and a month and a half (ish) until the end of the transfer window. I reckon we'll be fine.

Just hope its quality additions and not something underwhelming.

With all the quality weve been linked with, it would be disappointing now to not get at least one more big signing

I made a post a few weeks back saying i reckon we will announce a player out of the blue that we have not been linked with,I still reckon we will .

I doubt it's a easy as phoning a club and offering x amount of £££ for a player, they accept and player X is at the club the next day.

the better the player the longer the deal will drag out

Why do you think this? I would say it is very unlikely looking at our transfer history.

De Ridder/Yoshida/Mayuka/Forren were pretty much all out of the blue, maybe the day before it was rumoured,if we get one of our "top" targets then I assume it has already been reported/covered but I am sure we will get in a winger that has gone completely under the radar

Agree with your second point, the club announcing we're interested in Damiano, Wanyama and Benega certainly raised our expectations. They've achieved one of those - but now our hopes have been raised with the other two positions, makin an underwhelming signing could annoy Saints fans.

That said, someone we find 'underwhelming' doesn't necessarily mean he'll have a poor season - sometimes it's the players we sign cheaply or with little reputation that can make the most impact. Looking back at our recent history, nobody knew much about Pahars, Beattie or Davies but all went on to have a big impact on us. Then there's the failure factor - signing a big name on big money brings with it expectations. Ramirez for instance was our record signing and came with a big reputation for a youngster, so judging by those standards he had a poor season. Had we signed him with no reputation and little money, his stats - 5 goals and 3 assists in only 20 starts - is a fairly decent return for a midfielder. (Although granted, expensive or not he should have made more starts. I think injury and suspension didn't help with those...)

May I offer a reminder about basic forum etiquette?

Give your thread a title that indicates what the subject is. "I think it's obvious" could be about anything. If you had called this thread "Obvious that Cortese struggles to find players", I would have known what it was about and avoided it!

Danke!

I never once said I saw such & such being shown around St Mary's however a top player was rumoured to have been shown around the stadium with Wanyama and that's just not me saying that.

A few people on here heard it and a couple of players have told some fans too.

If it was Osvaldo as rumoured (by a player ) then maybe he is still thinking it over or he is not interested.

What is obvious, although not to some on here, that there are numerous other clubs across Europe who would be more attractive to a player than us for a number of reasons. It's great to have ambition but we so have to accept that not everyone we try to sign always dreamed of playing for Southampton.

Very true and I bet Cortese is doing his best to sell us to them.

Going on the current requirement of signing young players who will progress and blossom at Saints, how many prolific big name strikers are there under the age of 23?

Stands to reason that we will not make a grandstand striker signing that we need to enhance the first team, which we are all hoping for.

Could we get Damaio, Munian or De Jong in reality or will they go to Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool or one of the big italian teams which will be the competition we are up against.

I think it's obviously not obvious.

I suggest we have a poll to see if it is obvious or not obvious. The result of the poll will obviously indicate the obviousness or otherwise. Of course the option of undecided might make the obviousness less obviously clear. Obviously.
