Restark19 Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 Very bored today so decided to look into this The way I see it atm is we've got 23 numbers which are already taken for next season... 1. Davis 2. Clyne 3. Yoshida 4. Morgan 5. Hooiveld 6. Fonte 7. Lambert 8. Davis 9. Rodriguez 10. Ramirez 12. Gazzaniga 13. Fox 16. JWP 18. Cork 20. Lallana 21. Guly 23. Shaw 24. Mayuka 26. Stephens 28. Chambers 31. Boruc 39. Isgrove 42. Puncheon We also have 7 which will definitely/very likely be vacated. 11. Sharp 14. Hammond 15. Forren 19. Lee 22. Richardson 27. Chaplow 33. De Ridder and 2 players (for now) who will be in need of squad numbers in Wanyama and Lovren. Wonder which numbers they'll take and whether we'll see any number swapping like Cork/Davis last year Wanyama may well take 76 and I'd expect Lovren to take 15. If we brought in a new striker they would almost certainly take on number
Batman Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 Boruc - 1 wanyama wont take 76, dont think that is allowed in the prem. Looks daft anyway. Probablt get 14 can see shaw going to 3 Hooiveld maybe going to 15 and Lovren to
Olallana Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 According to Wiki Wanyama uses no 12 in the national team, but that´s usually a keepers number in League Football...??

pingwing Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 ^^ S. Davis will still be no.8 (preferred number like Lallana 20 and Punch 42)
Window Cleaner Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 we won't do squad numbers, just the players' initials on the back of the shirts and the front of the shorts, same as the training gear. We aren't sheep any more. We are not a number, we are free men. Plastics, refs and ignorant commentators can .... right off.

I thought it could be anything up to 99, after all Judy has #42 Shaw #3, Wanyama #14, Yoshi #15, Lovren #16, Isgrove #17, Mayuka #19 and Chambers #22 would all make sense. I'm guessing whichever striker we do eventually get will take #11.
sentry Posted 19 July, 2013 Share Posted 19 July, 2013 Never liked squad numbers. Think it is negative, before the season even starting by dropping a player from say 3 to 15 straight away says ' you are not really in my plans'. I think it can be really negative and get the player down before they even set foot on the pitch. I would as a manager just pull them from the hat or something. Apparently there is no limit, 62 has been used by Man City player I think, but the PL seem to have the option to say no to a number rather arbitrarily. Somehow I doubt that VDub will be wearing 76 though it would be a nice idea. Edited 21 July, 2013 by VectisSaint
Over land and sea Posted 21 July, 2013 Share Posted 21 July, 2013 (edited) For what it's worth, many of the players were wearing last season's squad numbers in the latest friendly: 31 Boruc, 2 Chambers, 5 Lovren, 6 Fonte, 13 Fox, 4 Schneiderlin, 18 Cork, 11 Puncheon, 10 Isgrove, 20 Lallana, 7 Lambert 12 Gazza, 17 Clyne, 6 Fonte (? Stephens), 14 Hooiveld, 15 Shaw, 4 Schneiderlin (10 Isgrove, ? Turnbull), 3 Wanyama, 16 Ward-Prowse, 8 Davis, 21 Guly, 9 Rodrigues Edited 22 July, 2013 by Over land and sea

Some you'd expect, some odd. Cant see Morgan at 16, and Chambers before Clyne. I would be surprised if Jos and Jose keep their numbers too. I'm guessing whichever striker we do eventually get will take #11. Provided you can have predominantly consecutive numbers you can have any number you like - I recall Bendtner reverting to 52 with Arsenal/Sunderland but Arsenal have long had players in the 50s playing in the League Cup due to picking their youth team and reserves and them needing to have a squad number. Unlikely however that we'd have 25 squad members plus allocate squad numbers to an additional 50 under 21s in order to get Wanyama to wear a daft high number. Re : 12, it's not always a GK number, UK sides often prefer 13 for keepers due to the bad luck thing meaning others don't want it and 12 historically being "first sub" and therefore an outfielder, but 12 is a popular GK number internationally and that's becoming more prevalent in the UK recently (viz Gazzaniga last year when Butterfield had 12 the season before). I usually start this kind of thread, but it's pretty futile, and with both kits changing every season there's not much long termism to consider like there used to be when clubs were only changing shirts every two seasons in alternate years, and there was a need to maintain numbers year on year so fans didn't get narky about having the right kit but wrong number in the second year of use. I can see Mayuka getting 19 instead of 24 this season.

Yeah but that's only because he plays for Australia and they've been using the 100+ numbers for their domestic-based squad when they play matches in Australia, as opposed to the normal squad who play in the other games all over the world and have the proper numbers. I can cope with that.
