Smirking_Saint Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 Shame, will be a blow for us, the academy seems in good shape under him right now. Decent appointment by the FA though in bringing in someone like him. All depends who we get involved to bring the latest batch through
trousers Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 Southampton FC @SouthamptonFC Nicola Cortese: "Matt will leave us with the best wishes of everybody associated with the Club. He has given #SaintsFC seven years of hard work and dedication, and played an important part in developing the Academy. It is an honour to see the work of a Southampton employee recognised by The @FA."

farawaysaint Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 The academy is our crown jewel I hope Nicola brings in only the best. Good luck to Matt though, as Nicola says the FA is obviously recognising his sterling work and hopefully planning to overhaul the failing national system. Gemmel Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 The academy is our crown jewel I hope Nicola brings in only the best. . I think it is pretty much guaranteed that Cortese will only bring it the best. I actually think it is one area where we can really compete with the big boys. Our track record in bringing youngsters through is widely acknowledged in football, so you get to see the fruits of your labour. Imagine running the Chelsea, Spurs, Man City, or arsenal academies . Bucks Saint Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 Not another one. We need to lock these people in for longer / or least have a big release clause when the FA come calling, as they seem to. Good luck to him though
Saint Charlie Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 As far as I understand it, Matt isn't so much a Coach but oversees the whole Academy programme, from the education to recruitment, setting up the right coaching team etc. The opportunity to do this at National level can't really be turned down and he will do a good job. Sure NC will get the right person in.
Olallana Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 If he´s been there for 7 years he was here before Cortese. Will they go out and also be open for someone from Italy/Spain or so? Probably IMO.
ByTheGolacs Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 I have had some (albeit) limited dealings with Matt and many of the other people in the Acadamy setup as my son is at the Bath Acadamy and often goes to Staplewood for sessions and matches. I know people here an elsewhere really rate our setup, but even so I don't think people realise quite how hard these guys work and how much their care about the overall wellbeing of the kids - they are an awesome team and I would argue that Matt's replacement is a more important appointment to get right than any one £20m player we might buy. I just hope the FA let him get on with the job in the way he sees fit without tying him up with useless meetings and commitees. Best of luck. He should do well in a future England role, and hopefully will be part of a new structure in FA when all the " old crocks "are finally pensioned off. LostBoys Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 Bad news but obviously a prestigious job. Also no one gets sacked at the FA and you also get the opportunity to s**g the payroll although you may have to share her with others. Sorry it must be the heat
Charlie Wayman Posted 17 July, 2013 Share Posted 17 July, 2013 This could be a critical wheel-nut falling off? Obviously he doesn't buy into Cortese's Utopian dream. What's he going to do at the FA except sit on his arse all day, it's not the FA's job to scout, recruit and train young players, unless of course they are so ****ed off with PL's attitude to the release of players for international matches that they are in future going to grow their own talent and run England as a separate club! Brave Sir Robin Posted 18 July, 2013 Share Posted 18 July, 2013 He would've been in a better position to help England bring through the next generation of world class players by staying at Saints! Luke Shaw alone is a great legacy. I just hope his replacement does as well as he did, or it'll be damaging to both club and country.

That was a good team. Hopefully we can raise the bar to match expectations and get a great academy head in place soon. I think the Dark Lord knew this was an area that paid for it self and more so maybe left them to it to find, coach and school the kids to reap the benefits.
