Would we have got 20,000 fans turn up at SMS if we'd signed Gomez like Fiorentina?

They have a 35,000 capacity yet average only 23,000 to home games. But 20,000 of these rather apathetic supporters from what you might call a provincial team like Saints in some respects turn up to see the unveiling of Gomez.

Also, look at the mental scenes at Atletico Madrid when they unveiled David Villa. Amazing really. Ronaldinho was 31 i think when he got 20,000 turn up for him at Flamengo.

If we signed someone comparable would we get that? For instance if Damiao signed or Osvaldo - would we see that? I think not. Bit of a shame really. I like all that show-biz stuff. We are not really that kind of club.

Who would draw that kind of crowd to an unveiling at SMS?

Lucy Pinder?

If Gareth Bale were to return home then I think that would definitely draw that type of crowd in.

Its a latin thing. I cant think of many instances in England where 20000 or so turned up when a player was unvieled, Michael Owen signing for Newcastle is the only one I recall.

Shearer up there as well

Damio and Osvaldo aren't comparable to Gomez or David Villa. If we signed Robin Van Persie I expect we'd turn out in our droves.

Fiorentina aren't provincial either - they're a bigger and far more decorated club than Southampton and Florence is a marginally bigger city. Their attendance is smaller but that's true across Italy - you wouldn't dare to suggest we're anywhere near as big as Juventus even though our average attendance is only a few thousand short of theirs (38,472).

Depends if the club organise a formal unveiling, surely? Doesn't seem to be the done thing in the UK, but happens a lot elsewhere if the player is high profile enough, in which case I suppose behaviour would be pretty much the same.

I wouldn't turn up even if we signed Messi. Why would I want to see him waving and doing keepy upeees?

I'd wait till the first game and see him then, playing football. (Which is what he actually does).

Like you said, they dont seem to be 'real' football fans or at least the culture is different there. i like the english style that Saturdays at 3 are the real deal and football/the club is bigger than the player.

To answer your question, if it were a Saturday, then maybe a top top international, but on a week day then not many as most people are at work. These Latin Mediterranean counties never seem to be at work! Them and Geordies!
