DuncanRG Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 "José Fonte believes he has never experienced a better level of camaraderie than currently exists among the Southampton squad." This is brilliant to hear, and people often forget what effect this kind of thing can have on a team's ability to succeed. If Osvaldo and Banega really are bad apples or 'fruitcakes', is our group strong enough to handle it or would it be the cat amongst the pigeons? Glasgow_Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Banega doesn't seem like a bad influence, he's been there quite a while and been a key part of a successful team. Possibly a fruitcake in a way we could handle I think. Ala Boruc
Olallana Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Dont you think that it´s easier for players to come into the group and not be a disturbance if the team spirit is what Fonte is saying?
Bucks Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Call me cyncial but this is a piece on the OS about team spirit, from a player who is far from certain to start, and is not worth getting too excited about, sorry

Wes Tender Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Dont you think that it´s easier for players to come into the group and not be a disturbance if the team spirit is what Fonte is saying? Exactly. Really good to hear that the team spirit is so good and accordingly it ought to be easier for newcomers to feel a part of something special. We appear to have a good blend of player ages, some different nationalities, experience to mix with raw youth and the management personnel to foster that team spirit. It all bodes well for next season, provided that new additions settle in well with their team mates.

Dont you think that it´s easier for players to come into the group and not be a disturbance if the team spirit is what Fonte is saying? I'd be inclined to think that, yeah, just posting the question Call me cyncial but this is a piece on the OS about team spirit, from a player who is far from certain to start, and is not worth getting too excited about, sorry This didn't seem like a canned 'the chairman's got a vision for this club' type interview to me, and I'm not sure what his impact on the first XI's got to do with it! If anything it's encouraging to hear these words form someone who's a little more on the fringes in footballing terms.
iansums Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Apology acceped Why do you think Fonte wont start? Sorry to go all MLG but he didn't say 'won't start' but 'far from certain to start'. I tend to agree and think Lovren and Yoshida will be the preferred starting combination. I think 99% of players will be saying how great the morale is on their club's respective OS. Just like we hear at every tournament how great the morale is in the England camp yet we still play sh*t. I'm not saying there isn't a good atmosphere amongst the Saints players but I always take a report like this with a pinch of salt.

Fair enough to accept that there is an element of propaganda to it, but then there is a question of degree to throw in. If a player was asked by somebody to comment on the team spirit and responded that it was good, then that would be what one might expect in normal circumstances at most clubs. But for him to state that he had never before experienced team spirit as good as with this group is a bit more than that and presumably he wouldn't have said that if he didn't believe it. Prince Jazzbo Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 (edited) I try to make a habit of avoiding player's rallying call type articles. I lost faith in Claus' weekly speeches in the 2004/05 season when we got relegated. Edited 16 July, 2013 by Prince Jazzbo

Claus's Monday Morning ditty in the Echo or the OS about how the players let everyone and themselves down but are relaxed they will turn things around next this coming weekend against xxxxxx used to drive me incandescent. And I swear Jose says the same thing every summer. Personally, if I had a gaffer with a weak grasp on the lingo I'd expect everyone knuckling down, fairly serious, with limited banter going on.
