berkshiresaint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 stay with me I am not saying he is any where near as good as lampard, but I think that given time he could turn into a decent AM, running down the center and supporting our strikers a,la lampard. I think as a striker his options would be limited especially if as reported we are looking for a top draw striker, as a winger he is not good enough so maybe playing in front of the 2 DM's is where he will flourish? The Kraken Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 I'd rather we signed players and then played them in their strongest positions; the positions we bought them for. Seeing £20M of talent in JRod and Ramirez oftentimes not played in their strongest positions (never mind not played at all at times) was baffling. Saint Charlie Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 He will be in the starting team somewhere and has huge potential and the pace we otherwise miss. Where he will play predominently is still unknown I think.

Smirking_Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Not IMO, has more pace out wide then Punch or Lallana, personally think he is starting to look ok in his inside forward role. One that may be able to play there (ish) would be Lambert but in all reality we havnt anyone to play there. A top form Ramirez may be worth building a team around (which is what Chelsea did for years).

Don't really see what's wrong with what he's said,I like Rodriguez but Lampard has been a top player and one of the best midfielders of the last ten years, Rodriguez has a handful of decent appearances at top flight to his name. Usual stuff on here if someone tells it how it is, not the sugar coated version the forum wants.
Le Timmier Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Jayrod not fit to tie Lamps' laces imho The OP is clearly talking about the "Lampard role" and as such is only using the name Lampard to make it obvious the type of role in the team to which he is referring. He has made it clear he is not comparing JRod with Lampard in terms of quality. There was no reason whatsoever to shoot the OP down
Toadhall Saint Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Can't see it myself FL is or was a top draw midfielder - not just a goal scorer. I don't see JRod as a big passer of the ball in the same mould. But more than happy to be proved wrong. Ramirez is nearer the mark - just not size wise. Olallana Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Can´t see him in that role myself. Think he will be one of the 3 in a 4-2-3-1 where the three move a lot and interchange. Or that he would be on of the top 2 in a 4-2-2-2 formation. I really hope we have two different formations this year depending on who we play, we were a little bit too predictable last year IMO. tajjuk Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 Two of Jay Rod's biggest strengths atm are running at people and pace. Which are also probably two of Lampards weakest areas. The 'Lampard' Role, needs excellent passing, reading of the game, off the ball movement, good finishing and good long shooting. Not sure Jay Rodriguez has any of those abilities that well down yet. I think if anything we are going to keep developing him in the wide role he plays, running at people. If anyone can play the Lampard role it's probably Lambert, and Gaston should be capable of playing it if he finds some consistency as he certainly has the talent. Yep, that's exactly how I see him fitting in. If we get Banega a 4-2-2-2 would really suit us, with Wanyama and Schniderlin holding, Ramirez/Lallana and Benga in front and Lambert and Rodriguez up front. It would make us very narrow though. I wonder if he is going to go more narrow with the width coming from the full backs ? We dont have any traditional wingers apart from De Ridder and so he now has a choice of 3 DMs and potentially a strong front 3 behind a main striker aswell. Interesting, and will certainly help with possession. How very spanish

Many people also didn't think we would sign both Wanyam and Banega but we seem to be trying to do that. Could point to a different type of formation or Pochettino is happy having Lallana, Puncheon, Jay Rod as the wide options, with maybe Gaston cutting in from the right as well like he did against Liverpool? So more like a Mourinho at Chelsea 4-3-3: Boruc Clyne Lovren Yoshida Shaw Wanywama/Cork in the 'Makelele' role Banega/JWP as the 'Lampard' Schneiderlin/Davis as the 'Essien' Gaston/Puncheon as the 'Robben' Lallana/Jay Rod as the 'Joe Cole' Lambert/New Striker as the 'Drogba' Edited 16 July, 2013 by tajjuk

DuncanRG Posted 16 July, 2013 Share Posted 16 July, 2013 The fact is that there are very few players in the world who actually play 'the Lampard role', Frank being one of them. It doesn't just mean goalscoring mid. I personally can't see why we'd waste Jay by playing him anywhere other than near the front. His awareness, creativity and pace are already good, just needs to hone his movement and finishing which is true of most young strikers coming into a tougher league.
