Calling yourself a scummer ?

The mythical dock strike is just that... mythical.

Ask any Pompey fan to provide evidence for the events, they struggle to prove the year let alone anything else.

And your point is? How many Saints fans can prove the year Pompey fans each had sex with a flat fish? not what the OP asked.

Great imput 110 , I ask because I keep seeing flags etc with "scummmers on tour" and "scum army" on them on twitter and Facebook ! And mateys excuse after me pulling him on it was its to twist it round on the skates and turn it into an affectionate nickname for ourselves like Arsenal and Spurs have !

There is a signicant difference between the two nicknames.

Skate

- The nickname the "Skates" isn't as you suggest about every Portsmouth fans having sex with fish, it is about sailors based in Portsmouth.

Scummer

- I'm yet to see any evidence of the mythical dock strike. Pompey fans feel unsure to even name a year, decade or a shred of evidence these events took place.

....................

Saints fans are fully aware "Skates" it is a tongue in cheek nickname and most likely has little root in reality - at least not widespread in Portsmouth. Perhaps some sailors did it, perhaps not, there would have only been very few examples of it. Difference is the majority of Pompey fans believe the mythical dock strike as being true.

You can even bore the arse off people when discussing light hearted nicknames can't you.

Shame putting people on your ignore list doesn't stop you seeing those posts if quoted. He appears to have forgotten I have him on my ignore list so I won't be reading what it says and have no intention to read any of his posts ever again, let alone reply directly to him.

I use Oi Scummer!! as a term of affection if I see any Saints Fans outside of The Southampton Area on non Away Day situations.

Hopefully managing to explain that I am also A Saint before they lamp me ;-)

Won't have no time for no explanation if said Saints fan is me...

You are one boring turd. Is that all you ever do? You are like a kid with a new toy! Has the summer holidays started early or something.

Why post? Just don't get it. And yes I expect that all I will get is a face palm (which will confirm my thoughts)

Back to the OP. I don't call myself a scummer. Just don't like the term.

A kid would enjoy such a rubbish thread.

It takes a certain level of maturity to realise how ridiculous of a thread this is.

"Scummer" has never been nor ever will be a term of endearment. To ask if it is "accepted" to call ourselves scummers is absolutely mental.

(p.s. that face palm was at OP again, not at you stepgear, I agree with your thoughts 100%)

When used by a pompey fan it is meant as an insult so I take it as a declaration of war and tailor the conversation accordingly.

My immediate response to anyone who calls me a scummer is to call them a pikey or ask why they aren't at home having a go on their sister, or down the graveyard abusing the dead.

That's the fun of living on the frontline, you have to adopt a different attitude to the few and accept no sh!t.

Re the dock strike, it did happen - in 1926.

In London!

It is a story stolen from Millwall and West Ham, and peddled in Portsea pubs by cross-eyed simpletons to the toothless and easily-led.

Free myth with every lucky heather.

And there are so many myths it is beyond belief.

Saints fans all boo their own team, we all leave after an hour, one guy told me we gave away 13,000 free tickets every home game to illegal immigrants, Cortese has borrowed £30M, we don't own the ground - rarely can a fanbase have lapped up so much drivel and accepted it as fact.

To top that off, there are even question marks over the accuracy of the original London story, let alone the revamped to suit pompey version.

Ho?

This forum is strange nowadays with so many multiple personalities, I dont know if im dealing with skates, scummers, hybrids, god knows!

The only person on this forum who I truly know is genuine, decent, honest, humourous and most importantly humble is Glasgow Saint.

What really bugs me is fans of other clubs, notably southern ones, who have picked up on pompey calling us scummers and decide to follow suit... a Fulham fan I know does it completely naturally which annoys me.

In a strange way, these names must only be muttered by us saints and those dirty, cheating, f*cking skate bastards and no one else.

oh, and a facepalm to finish.

They do love a story don't they. They'll believe anything it fits an agenda.

My "friendly scummer demeanour" got me a free beer at The Rolling Stones concert in Hyde Park last weekend.

I was wearing my old diagonal sash saints shirt when I queued up for a beer; the two guys in front of me ribbed me as a scummer, then announced they were Millwall fans and they were going to add a beer for me to the round they were buying and there was no way I was allowed to decline.

Nice chaps, Millwall fans .........

Maybe if I'd gone "all anti" to the scummer ribbing, I'd have seen a different side of them.

i'm 44 and have been brought up calling pompey fans scummers.

i could never call them skates just because a certain nick illingsworth decided we should change to calling them skates.

i hope one day we will revert to calling them scummers again as half my family decend from the dark side of hampshire and they hated me caklling them scummers.

As per my user name, I don't have a problem with it. Although born in Southampton, I've spent most of my life living in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas. I'm so used to being called a Scummer that I don't think anything of it.

Pompey fans seem to think that its the ultimate insult, which is quite sweet. They even scold each other on their forums for using the term "Scummer", as its capalised. We're not deserving of the capital letter, you see. Bless.

But if latching on to a completely inoffensive and unoriginal moniker gives them a little solace then I'm all for it. Scummer me up.

Those of us who have been saints fans for more than 5 minutes remember that it is not so long ago that we called them scummers. This skates/scummer nickname divide is relatively new anyway.

I remember being at the Dell in the 80s and seeing a banner some wag had made and taken along, reading: "Portsmouth. Scummers of the south".

I have to admit; I've never understood their "pony fiddler" jibe. Perhaps there was an epidemic of equine tomfoolery in the SO area that completely passed me by.

Some bloke got done for doing something explicit with a horse at the back of Weston Shore apparently.

Although the more serious ‘pony fiddling’ incidents that took place in the 80s, occurred in the East Hants area, which according to them are 100% PFC...apparently

I quite like the scum army chants, takes it back as an insult and winds the fish fu.ckers up even more.

As for mlt... Jesus not only boring about a ****take but also wrong, it's completely about them being fish fu.ckers and it winds them up cause they called the matlows that!

Mind you as many have pointed out I remember us calling them scummers in the 80s

Oh and the dock strike - along with recent bin strike - happened in Southampton and there's union records on both to show the skates broke both.

One of the highlights of my life was when Moran scored the winner in the FA Cup tie at Fratton and all the the Saints fans were singing "scummers here scummers there scummers every ****ing where". It was was our Amarillo moment +10 .
