The Richard Chaplow Appreciation Thread

As a few others have noted it seems a bit unfair to lump Chaplow's departure in with a player who had less game time than Ali Dia.

At £50k Chaplow was a model professional, became a key part of our winning team mentality and put in some stirling performances that contributed to our back to back promotions.

Good luck for the future Chappers.

Always been a fan of Chaplow. Felt it was a bit of a coup when we signed him in mid-table of L1.

Had a bit of a rubbish time at PNE, but that was because of the clown of a manger they had - not down to him as a player.

I'll never forget that period between September > November in the championship, he was unplayable and won a fair share of games for us in that time frame.

An excellent box to box midfielder and a decent bloke to boot. He will be a brilliant signing for Millwall if they get him.

Totally agree, Chaplow has been a model professional around the club and put in some fantastic performances as we rose from L1 through the Championship. Can only wish him the best with his new club, whoever that is. Whoever he goes on to play for, they'll have a great midfielder in their ranks.

Amazing that we got him for £50k!

My missus is gutted, she had a soft spot for Chaplow. Called him Chappers. It sparked when I took her to see Saints play in League One - I forget who we played now, but Chaplow played on the left and was exceptional. I think he got MOTM. She always hoped that one day he'd join Norwich. She's weird. She also fancies David Bentley.

Of all the players in the depths of our squad last season, of all the lower league players that suddenly found themselves part of a Premier League team, the one I wouldn't have been too concerned about getting game time was Chaplow. He always gives his all, and is far from being a poor player. Millwall, or whoever gets him, will have a good little player on their hands.

I remember that too. Morgan, Cork, Hammond and Chaplow were fighting for those two spots in central midfield, but his amazing run of games came on the right wing AFAIR.

Man Utd goal was a real beauty too!

Just a proper professional footballer, made the most out of his talent and was appreciated by fans and players a like. Always gave his all, had more quality than people gave him credit for and was obviously a team player. Even more respect for him now he's cancelled his contract with the club when he could have sat it out. Just a football player who wants to play. The game needs more like him.

Tweets what he wants on twitter too. Top guy, wish all the best.

P.S. please don't score against us like everybody else who leaves this club does.

Will always remember Chaplow with great affection. As previousdly said he is a model professional and hesrt and soul of the squad during his time at the club. Wish him the very best for the future and look forward to him playing well at Millwall.

Key member of our back-to-back promotion squads. In all the excitement of signing world class players at £10m a piece, just remember we have the likes of Chappers to thank for some incredibly enjoyable seasons, and for taking us back to the top flight.

One of my favourite players during our time in the lower leagues, whilst the club progresses it is sad we have to say goodbye to players like Chappie. If it wasn't for that injury at Bristol City and he had maintained his form he could easily have been our player of the season in the Championship.

Thanks and all the best in your future career!

Why is Chaplow getting way more praise than someone like Richardson who contributed far more to the club?

Or Hammond. Chaplow is loved for running around a lot and 'getting into players' without ever actually being particularly impressive with the ball. IMHO.

I thought Richardson's contribution in the Championship was great, glad it wasn't just me.

You could always have started a thread at the time...

TBH there will be very few players from our march up the divisions that I won't view with a little manly affection, no matter how little they did. I was always a fan of Richardson and wish him, like all of those who contributed, all the best when they move on.

Add his picture to the banner at the top of the page?

A little sour. :p

I agree with the point about Richardson, fwiw. But theres loads of others who did us proud coming up through the divisions, Butters, Dickson, Hammond, etc etc who hardly get a mention nowadays.

Chaplow was a bit of a standout though, and that scorcher against manure = Saints Legend in my book.

I went to his house, top guy but what struck me was how down to earth he and his family are. Kids running around happily with dad, wife doing the hoovering, a typical young family with no airs or graces.

A good pro and will do a job for a championship side.

Why? He's so average and he played for us twice last year I believe.

Because now the only cover at RB is moving Cork out of midfield or playing Yoshida there (and he was at his worst in the fullback positions). Unless Stephens or Chambers are ready to step in.

I think it's because we've had so few genuine box to box midfielders in recent years. It was exciting to have a midfielder who would get into the penalty box and he gave us an added dimension when, as good as Cork, Morgan and Hammond were, they weren't that sort of player
