Increased support in Kenya?

So on each of the media outlets who have reported on the Victor signing hand had lots of comments from Kenyens saying how pleased they are, and that they are now Saints fans!

Kenya has a huge population of passionate fans, is this a new outlet for us to increase our fan base, merchandising?

It's also somewhere no other teams are tapping away at!

I've got a couple of truck loads of £17.99 Adidas template red Soccerball shirts en route there with iron on SFC badges. Going to be knocking them out in the markets of Nairobi and Mombassa for £27.99 a piece. Kenya will be awash with fake saints kits by the start of the season. :D

Not for £27.99 per item in a Nairobi street market!!

There may be an increase in profile, but fundamentally the Kenyans will follow the player, not the club.

I wonder whether we'd target other Kenyans. I'm not sure how good they are in general, I know one plays in France, but most are home based. We did it in the past with Bleidelis and Chala. I'm not saying sign a player just for the sake of appeasing Wanyama, but I wonder if there are any talented Kenyans that could come in that would a)help Victor settle and b) add to our squad. Anyone know of any?

Just remind me how many appearances Bleidelis and Chala made between them. Was it more or the same as Forren?

Pretty sure i could be wrong but im sure one of them did actually play, or at least made the bench which was the pinnacle of Forrens career with us I believe!

I've been to Kenya, and they certainly do love their Premier League football over there. Would expect to see a fair few Saints shirts being worn on Nairobi streets..

As for other Kenyan players, there's Dennis Oliech who's the former national team captain and main striker. Pretty average goal record but quick and a good athlete. McDonald Mariga is another player I rate, holding midfielder for Inter. Struggled quite a lot with injuries over the last 3 or 4 years but a good player if he can get that sorted. Nearly signed for 3 or 4 Prem clubs before but had work permit issues.

Thanks for the Wiki update Mikey. Mariga is Wanyama's brother btw.

How many Kenyans would be able to afford £50+ for a football shirt?

Here's a picture I took in Kenya a few years ago at a party at one of the hotel waiters shamba. Really I took it for a work colleague but in this instance thought it may be worth sharing. They won't have any trouble getting shirts if they want to, they just may not be the right colour........look closely......:smug:

Well, today in the office has been mad; loads of people coming up and asking about the team, are we buying anyone else, what are the fans like etc... One guy even started singing "Oh When The Saints" in Kiswahili... There will be a lot of interest here.. As mentioned Dennis Oliech is their only other "famous" player (is he at Auxerre?), but has a bit of a "lad" reputation for partying...

Apparently Wanyama's mum has a fish shop on Ngong Road which is locally famous - I'll try to get a photo of it to give you some idea of Wanyama's background/upbringing.

And no, GBP50 shirts are a no-go; 65% of people here live on less than US$1 per day...

Been to Kenya and the premier league is massive. A good friend of mine is in Kenya right now and works out there. He tells me we'll be the best supported club in East Africa after Arsenal, United and Chelsea. The interest that a Kenyan will be playing in the Premier League is huge. Don't underestimate it. It was front page news.

Unlikely to sell shirts etc. I wonder if the Saints Foundation will be going back out to Kenya again?

I am a regular listener to BBC World Service and they have a program on called Sports World on Saturdays often with a phone in. Most of the callers are Africans.I would imagine Victor will be a major topic of conversation.

We do realise dont we that we could all pop to Kenya for our holidays and buy fake Saints shirts for the cost of a packet of crisps.

...or we could take our old, and maybe even new shirts (if you can afford to holiday in Kenya as a family, an additional £50 is not going to break the bank!) and donate it to the rural kids that would otherwise not be able to afford them?

BTW Kenya is a great holiday destination.

Also coincidently BTW – I was born in Kenya (Kisumu) – many moons ago though – fact! So a new interest in Saints games :-)
