Is Yoshida-Lovren good enough?

Obviously with Fonte and Hooiveld as solid, if unspectacular, backup.

 

Do we really need or want another CB? Cheap backup or top class first choice? Or should we save money instead and spend it elsewhere like winger and forwarad?

 

IMO with the likes of Cork and Clyne quite versatile we do not need any more defenders. Let's get some top quality attacking talent instead.

 

On a side note, I completely take back my anti-Lovren rant from a few weeks ago since in hindsight we did desperately need another CB.

It is no way good enough for the whole season...our defence was a massive weakness and showed that Fonte and Hoiveld are not up to standard...with both players nearly 30...they can't be relied upon

Would be happy to sell either or both...Yoshida is a good squad player but we certainly need one more

Both Fonte and Jos put in some good shifts last season, just not as consistently as we need for them to be regular starters. As backups, for cup games etc, I think they'll do a job.

 

Yoshida needs a solid defender next to him to perform at his best, somebody like Lovren would appear to be. I do think they'll be our first choice CB pair but I can't say I'm 100% comfortable. I can't help but fear that Yoshida has a few too many mistakes in him. Hopefully with Lovren the pressure will be off him and he will be more reliable.

 

I'm more worried about cover for LB and RB. We can't go an entire season without strength in depth and a capable player ready to step into both positions.
