Can't remember' date=' but who were the c-o-c-k-s on here who were adamant that Forren was being trained up for next season? I remember trying to debate this with them at the time and getting shouted down as not knowing anything.[/quote']

You trying to fill the position of forum hardman left by DPS?

Best of luck to Chappers. One of Saints FC's best buys in terms of value. Ran around like a madman in the style that is appreciated by the faithful. Nice bloke into the bargain, judging by the way he interacts with people on Twitter.

The Forren thing just looks like a complete joke. One of the problems with doing all our business in private is that we'll probably never get an explanation. If the rumours about his love of the sauce are true, that might go some way to explaining it.

He wasn't an Adkins signing. How many times.do people.need to be reminded of not only Forrens interview when he joined but also Adkins, who when asked said he knew nothing about it. Cortese clearly signed him, panicking because of defensive frailties at the time. I can't believe anyone actually buys this nonsense about him being bought for the following season. It was simply a very poor signing and makes his refusal to go on trial at Liverpool make more sense. He obviously knew he wasn't up to it. I think Cortese saw a player linked with a club like Liverpool and thought "he must be good". Anyway, like I said earlier, Sky are saying we've got.most.of our money back so its not a huge problem. Personally id be happy with the new bloke and Yoshida this season. If we can buy someone else, even better.

We? Watford? Who are you after?

Nice bit of picking and choosing what to believe there.

Good luck Chappers. Contributed in every game he played!

Yes good luck to him, no he didn't contribute to every game he played in, by a long way. Sent off away at Barnsley, nearly got sent off at home to Reading (and didn't take out Federici) to name a couple less than stand out performances....

The Forren departure makes me wonder whether Mayuka's days are numbered!

The thought crossed my mind. It did feel as though he was brought in a similar manner to Forren, IMO.

He's more versatile though. Big season for him. He needs to deliver pre-season.

Simon Peach has found out that Saints received £1.75m for Vegard Forren.

We paid Molde £3.5m in January for him.

Costly mistake but better to take a loss on transfer-fee and get him off the wage-bill. Leaving him on the fringes for another season would have probably cost us a similar amount in wages anyway, and it's hardly like we did the best job of putting him in the shop window for other clubs to bid on.

It's also just been pointed out to him that we won't have paid the £3.5m in full yet

I believe we only paid around 1.8-£2m up front tops for him.

Rest was on PL appearances and installments over periods of time. And given the fact he was only here for 6 months and didn't play once, I doubt those installments came into play.

Safe to say we've probably lost something like 600k. No biggy. But still one of the oddest transfers in recent history.

Going on the latest on Peach's twitter we may have lost over a million on this, plus wages, plus opportunity cost of having £3.5m tied up.

Just because payments are phased over time doesn't mean you don't have to pay them if you change your mind after six months and want to send the car / food mixer / Pl player back. Saints committed to pay £3.5m and have resold him for half that. Appalling business sense.

There is a difference between regulary fixed installments and performance based payments.

He's anything been said about if the fee was paid upfront or not? Someone is claiming on the UI that we have a policy if paying all fees up front and with consultancy fees, wages the loss is over £5m. Its the first I've heard of this as all transfers are usually spread out over the length of the contract so I'd put our loss at around £1.5m, which still £2m less than an injury prone Equdorian, so no big deal.

Forren was signed on a three and half year deal. If he was on £20,000pw at Saints and will go back to £5,000pw at Molde (reasonable assumptions) theres another £2.64m difference in wages contracted to consider in addition to the £1.75m transfer loss.

Which would only be relevant if we were paying out his contract, afaik there is no suggestion we are doing that?

No one will know, its all speculation. We've made a loss and a poor signing it happens and it won't be the first or the last. Credit to the club for acting swiftly and dealing with the problem by getting him off the books quickly. Far better this way than have him sitting around collecting his wages and seeing out his contract.

Ill stick my head up here and admit that the coaches were making an attempt to get him ready for this season, he came in under fit and probably not strong enough for games or the playing style we had.

Somewhere along the line he was deemed not good enough and certain rumours are that he didnt settle well and wanted to return home. He is a lad that had problems in the past too.

So yes, I was one of the cocks, and also seem to remember your 'debates' were not 'debates' at all but some claptrap with no basis in the reality of how players are coached.

Nice deal for Molde, did they even play a competetive match during Forrens little adventure here ?

Basically we have paid them around a million, got him fitter, paid his wages and chucked him back ready for their new season.

We really are a nice club these days...

This. I doubt that the overall cost is any worse than with the likes of Fourpast, Pulis, Chala, Bleidelis, etc. who were all on lengthy contracts and didn't play.

My immediate thoughts exactly.

We really were getting him ready for the new season. In Norway.

Sad to see Chaplow go, was absolutely vital in us gaining promotion. Reckon we would have won it if he'd come back as strong from injury.(!?)

Clearly something of the CMFG about him too!

Because he was that 20 goal a season striker that also saved 9 penalties and dominated every midfield in the champ??

I do wonder if I watched the same Chaplow as everyone else sometimes.

I agree. He had a spell of about 8 games where he was very good in the championship but in the main was no more than a decent squad player. He obviously has the all important quality that saints fans love of running around a lot, a hardworking player, a decent bloke but people seem to think he was some sort of footballing god who was a key player.

This exactly.

It may be deluded, but I am willing to believe that having a positive, hard working, runner in midfield can add to the team in more than just the individuals contribution. A team is more than a sum of its parts.

Plus, vitally, he was bald and as we all know bald saints midfielders are, by default, football geniuses.

Southampton FC@SouthamptonFC42s

#SaintsFC has today mutually agreed to terminate Richard Chaplow's contract, while Vegard Forren has rejoined former side @Molde_FK.

..........and this is just the start of the clearout.

next in line will be Aaron Martin, Jonno "Quick", SDR, and of course both Lee Barnard and Hammond are officially still under contract, I think?

..and I think that Lee and Mayuka will feel pleased if they see some sort of future ....in the future....

At least Mayuka is in Spain.

Tadanari Lee will hopefully find a permanent move elsewhere. He must be on a fair-old wage.

Could not agree more. it seems like a genuine change of policy. Previously Cortese seemed to hold out for a transfer fee and wasn't willing to cover the difference in wages and that meant players sitting around earinng a fortune and never getting close to a match day squad.
