It's just like 1991 all over again...

A humorous look at how things have changed and a pop at those who think we are small time....

Perhaps not quite humorous enough!

You the author would have had a valid point if our "star" signings have been good and performed well, they haven't they have been ****, our workhorse signings of Lambert and Davis have been the best by a long stretch.

I'm not really sure what the point of that article was or what point it was trying to make. Other than in 1991 we tried to sign a striker and midfielder and we're doing the same now, of course.

Seems to be about two players Saints actually signed compared to two players we haven't signed.

Can't believe we spent 500k on Dowie. Even in today's money I wouldn;t have spent that much on him. Awful player!

I dont have a clue to why that was written but Hurlock was a far better player than ever given credit for and Dowie kept us up the following season with some important goals.

Surely anyone who scored a goal in a season in which we just stayed up you could argue that those goals kept us up. Dowie scored 30 goals in 122 games for us........very poor by all accounts.

Dowie: 30 goals in 122 games - 1 goal every 4.07 games.

Shearer: 23 goals in 118 games - 1 goal every 5.13 games.

Christ, what a ****e player that Shearer was. How did we ever get a record fee from Blackburn for him!

Moron.

So you rated Dowie did you then?

TBF you're not comparing like for like. Shearer was starting his professional career when he was with us and looking at his scoring record it was poor when he was 18 - 20 but in the 1991/1992 season he hit 13 in 41 (just shy of 1 in 3) as a 21 year old. That doesn't also take into account his all round game, his touch and ability to hold the ball up.

Dowie joined us in his prime having scored less than 1 in 4 in his league career to that point and scored even less from then. Take out his dismal scoring record and he was still a poor player.

Not that I was old enough to know what footie was back then, but surely Dowie could not of been worse than some of the dross of the past 10 or so years like McCann, Idiakez, Delgado, etc?

I would put all 3 ahead of Dowie on footballing abilities, it's just those 3 mentioned were a big disappointment from what we were led to believe they'd bring to the team.

Thats because we were poor and he was the best we could get, we are going in for players we cant get now so whats better?

We had over 500k to spend (which is what we paid for Dowie), I think for that money in those times we could have got better than Dowie.

Really? What about wages and whether the player would come? Speedie was **** and he did not want to come, thats a good indication, as I said his goals kept us up, the West Ham one was very important.

I seem to remember Dowie's first game (certainly the first game I saw him in) was a friendly against Gothenburg in which David Hughes also made his debut. Hughes looked amazing, best player on the park, and there was much excitement about him being the next great youngster. Dowie on the other hand looked a nightmare, at one point doing a 'tyro league' when trying to trap a dropping ball it bounced and he nutmegged himself! I used to often see him with Adams and Hurlock in Simons Wine Bar, and Dowie was a pleasant bloke off the park, honest and 100% on the park but never a top flight player.

Anyone remember the 'header' at Man C away when a clearance hit him on the back of the head and looped over the keeper. Priceless!...

To give you some perspective, Chris Armstrong moved to Millwall in 1991 for 50k. Paul Wilkinson moved to Boro (not sure what the transfer fee was but I'd be surprised if it was much more than 500k) and Dean Holdsworth moved to Wimbledon for 800k a year later (I'd imagine his fee would have been less in 1991). All these players would have been preferable to Dowie.

I don't argue that Dowie scored goals that contributed to us staying up but my arguments are that anyone who scored goals that season contributed to us staying up and I think we could have bought better than Dowie.........but then we did have Branfoot in charge.
