If not Damiao, then who?

With our apparent interest in signing Damiao, it appears that Cortese & Pochettino want a striker and are willing to pay huge money to get it done. However, with the recent development that Napoli could well muscle in and hijack the deal.

So, who would you try and bring in if Damiao chooses Napoli?

I'd try and get Bony in, Vitesse seem to be trying to hold out for more money so he's still up for grabs.

Bony's a good call, though I'm surprised he's entertaining offers from lower Premier League clubs.

Gomis? Double figures in Ligue 1 for seven consecutive seasons, 20 in 40 in all comps last season.

Someone may eventually be able to tempt Stefan Kießling away from Leverkusen; he's better than others we've been talking about but at 29 probably cheaper.

EDIT: Sorry, thought Leverkusen had missed out on Champions League this year for some reason. No chance of that, then

Another good shout and Lyon want to sell him.

Roberto Soldado pleasehttp://bleacherreport.com/articles/1677781-roberto-soldado-or-leandro-damiao-which-striker-would-be-better-for-spurshttp://espnfc.com/player/_/id/42042/roberto-soldado?cc=5739#
Good shout, surprised that Alvaro Negredo of Sevilla hasn't been linked with more teams as well. I know he's recently been linked with Man City but appears to be well down their list. Perhaps NC could get a discount for buying Soldado & Banega!

Negredo's options seem limited at the moment as he said he will only leave for a CL club.

What does this have to do with it - care to explain?

probably due to numerous coincidental situations where a non-white player proves to be a lazy waste of space more often than not.

danny fox, neil mccann, callum davenport, mikael nilsson, andreas jakobsson, alan bennett. all black.

I'm not so convinced about him, the reason only lower end PL teams are chasing him are because they've seen his record

Defoe without a shadow of doubt. Proven international and premiership goal scorer. Will bag 20 a season

Would be perfect to partner lambert!

Plus he's only 7 million

He is 31 and was awful last season. Has never proven himself with England IMO.

Plus we need someone who can play up front on their own.

Why do people keep talking about Lukaku as a realistic signing? Chelsea paid £18m (I think) when they first bought him. He has since gone on to prove himself in the Premier League. I doubt they would sell at all, but certainly not for less than £30m.

I also can't see him moving permanently do a club outside of the CL. He won't be joining us.

Correct. Now Mourinho has said he wants him in the mix he is about as unrealistic as you can get.

I agree Defoe's not for us, but was he really awful? Double figures in a team which has had to model themselves around Bale rather than the strikers isn't too bad. He scored some vital goals as well.

Lukaku will never happen, and we'd have to pay horrendous amounts to get Benteke. That would be the biggest statement of intent though, nabbing a star player from one of your rivals. £30m+ that would take, so even if Villa consider selling we wouldn't pay that much.

Test Villa's resolve with a 20m bid for Benteke

Please tell me you're joking. You clearly didn't watch the game at Villa Park under Adkins. The bloke missed sitter after sitter. How anyone in their right mind would pay more than £10m for him is beyond me.

apparently swansea does not meet his ambitions.

anyway, if we're talking fantasy targets, gomez/villa/higuain. :D or a loan move for deulofeu. or swoop for out of favor demba ba now that lukaku's back.

Lukaku would be the top of my shopping list and those who think he'd cost £30m I would suggest you lay off the weed.

What I don't want us to do is spunk a sh.itload of ££ on a Carlos Kickaball who has never played in Europe but who the FM wan.kers think is mint.

What do you think Lukaku would cost considering Chelsea paid £18m, he had a great season and is still very young??

At what price do you think a club like Chelsea would be tempted to sell...?

Benteke, bony, lukkaku ?

Negredo or soldado a little different ?!

Defoe ? Behave, 31, bad attitude, poor last season and wouldnt fit in the system we play.

He has made an appearance on a place in the sun- millionaire edition though so would make a great mboard summer quiz question.

I agree, I think Benteke is f*cking pony. Pretty much every striker in the Premier League would be able to score the goals that he did last season. Sitters most of them.

As for a dream target for a striker, i'd love us to get Lukaku. It will never happen, but I think he's got the potential to be absolutely lethal. More realistically Bony would be a great shout, very athletic if a little raw still. Seydou Doumbia is another one that I think would be great for us.

It is a skill to score "sitters", you have to be in the right place at the right time. The actual finish maybe easy, but you have to be in the position to finish it in the first place.

Were you at the VIlla game - he was rash in front of goal but he created most of those chances by himself -andnot just by being in the right place at the right time. He absolutely bossed our defence. Jayrod has shown inconsistent flashes but we don't have strikers who can create something out of nothing.

was this before or after they signed anelka? if we don't get damiao I wouldn't mind us going for ba, premier league experience and would cost lesser than damiao I would imagine

I was at the Villa game, and most of the chances he "created" were due to our poor defending. Fair play to him, he exploited the gaps we left but seeing him miss all of those chances didn't exactly scream "world class" to me like Paul Lambert has been saying. Worse strikers have played in the Premier League, but I think his goal tally at the end of the season is incredibly flattering. Personally think that Weimann is twice the player he is.

Got to be Cardozo of Benfica for me

Ok so he's getting on a bit at 30 (only 3 months older than RVP) but he'd be awesome for a few seasons in the Prem

161 goals in 260 appearances for them and he is awesome in the air and with his feet- big and powerful

12-15M would be enough to secure him I reckon..

Fenerbahce are closing in on him though I fear

Surely scoring a sitter is down to bad defending not good positioning, no skill needed at all.

I think he won more headers than anyone in Europe or something stupid, scored a lot of goals in a poor performing team and was nominated for young player of the year.

Certainly not worth over 20m but saying he is overrated is a bit OTT. Of course he isnt workd class yet but thats managers for you. If we got Benteke over Damiao Id still be very happy and arguably more confident of him performing in England.

His value to Chelsea is probably around that. They won't sell.

I was at that game, he was poor. But he is vital to Aston Villa, they probably would have been relegated without him and they would only dream of selling him for serious money. Even more to a rival, like us. Maybe £30m is too much, I don't know, but they wouldn't sell for under £20m. In fact, haven't they rejected a bid of around that already?

Price tags are not direct reflections of how good a player is. They reflect their value to a club, that club's financial position, their age, the length remaining on their contract etc. Benteke and Lukaku have value in each of those categories, though Villa may be more tempted by a big-money offer than Chelsea. Of course I don't think Benteke is a '£30m player' but that could be somewhere close to what he's worth to the club.

I'd be over the moon. He's landed on his feet coming to England and already has goalscoring pedigree. A real match-winner, as well.

Anyway, won't happen.

What about Burak Yilmaz? Reportedly would cost €15m, excellent goal record last year (24 in 30 league games & 8 in 9 in CL). strong, quick & excellent in the air.

Are Galatasaray selling? I thought they'd already rejected an offer from PSG.

according to this dimarzio article someone posted in the Damiao thread, Galatasaray have told Fiorentina that he'll cost €15m

relevant bit

Fiorentina have already decided who to bet. It's Burak Yilmaz, Galatasaray striker. Have been proposed 5-year contract to 3 million plus 500,000 bonus. The Turkish company asks 15 million and is not willing to make concessions, but Fiorentina will try to lower the cost. All
