lordswoodsaints Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I heard the other day that ex mayors of southampton get free season tickets, now I can't confirm that this is true or not I can only say that the person who told me was related to one of the old mayors and I did also hear this about 12 years ago from a woman who bought my old house (she, being the daughter of an ex mayor) I don't want this turning into a cortese bashing thread as there is obviously some long standing arrangement with the club and council etc which pre dates the reign of the liebher family. My question is does anybody else know of any other public figures who are entitled to these perks or who else do you think should be given the 'key to the club'? (apart from prominant ex players/managers who IMO deserve some recognition)
hypochondriac Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 The mayor who has just left office is an absolutely smashing bloke and completely down to earth. If he gets a free ticket then I'm pleased for him.
Window Cleaner Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 they probably also have the right to drive sheep over Northam Bridge and be hanged with silken ropes. You'd have to look up ancient by-laws. However it is just possible that the Council actually buy a certain number of tickets or that a certain number are allocated to them.
hypochondriac Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Also some ex players get free tickets in hospitality. I know because I get to use them occasionally (and he charges me twenty quid the bastard).
Window Cleaner Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Also some ex players get free tickets in hospitality. I know because I get to use them occasionally (and he charges me twenty quid the bastard). then he is acting illegally. If you shop him you'll feel better.
georgeweahscousin Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Also some ex players get free tickets in hospitality. I know because I get to use them occasionally (and he charges me twenty quid the bastard). This made me laugh. He get's it free then flogs it to you for £20? That is tight.
Window Cleaner Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 This made me laugh. He get's it free then flogs it to you for £20? That is tight. it is also illegal in several ways. Does he declare the £20 to HMRC, I bet he doesn't.

Rach Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 My dad was Mayor in the mid 1990s and he never got a free season ticket. Don't think this is correct.
lordswoodsaints Posted 3 July, 2013 Author Posted 3 July, 2013 My dad was Mayor in the mid 1990s and he never got a free season ticket. Don't think this is correct. Both the people I spoke to were mayor in the 80's I think so perhaps it was abolished at a later date?
Rach Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Both the people I spoke to were mayor in the 80's I think so perhaps it was abolished at a later date? Don't know, can only speak from my own experience. My dad was a councillor from 1984-98 and a huge Saints fan, and I never once remember him referring to Mayors getting season tickets. Unfortunately he passed away in '98 so I can't ask him what was the situation in the 80s.
Dimond Geezer Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 The mayor who has just left office is an absolutely smashing bloke and completely down to earth. If he gets a free ticket then I'm pleased for him. Is that Derek Burke? I used to play footy with him for Winsor back in the 90s, as you say, a top bloke (& another former Mayor managed us).
lordswoodsaints Posted 3 July, 2013 Author Posted 3 July, 2013 But do the ex mayors like the new kit? I think they were offered a free one but just laughed and declined
Toomer Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 But do the ex mayors like the new kit? I know one that was offered a free shirt, he said feck off if it was stripes I would haven taken the offer up:)
hypochondriac Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Is that Derek Burke? I used to play footy with him for Winsor back in the 90s, as you say, a top bloke (& another former Mayor managed us). Yes that's the one. I showed some foreigners round a while ago and he was absolutely brilliant.
itchen Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Is that Derek Burke? I used to play footy with him for Winsor back in the 90s, as you say, a top bloke (& another former Mayor managed us). And also a Man Utd supporter.
itchen Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I was a councillor in the 90s (though not mayor). I never heard of this perk.
Dig Dig Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Also some ex players get free tickets in hospitality. I know because I get to use them occasionally (and he charges me twenty quid the bastard). The ex-player who is happy to take a free ticket off the club, sell it to you and then tells you loads of guff in the process?
Dig Dig Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I was Mayor between 1999-2003 and had a free season ticket.
Barry Sanchez Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 they probably also have the right to drive sheep over Northam Bridge and be hanged with silken ropes. You'd have to look up ancient by-laws. However it is just possible that the Council actually buy a certain number of tickets or that a certain number are allocated to them. How many do the bin collectors get?
itchen Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I was Mayor between 1999-2003 and had a free season ticket. I knew all 4 mayors in that period. I don't think any of them were you. I sometimes wonder if you always tell the truth...
Macey_J2 Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Cortese told me and the other people in the room at the time that no one gets a free season ticket, including him. There is an ex saints box which are obvs free match tickets when invited. Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Tokyo-Saint Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 As current mayor, I can confirm this is true and I am looking forward to my free season ticket. My first duty will be to shop hypo's mate.
scotty Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 This made me laugh. He get's it free then flogs it to you for £20? That is tight. That narrows it down to Scottish ex-players, or WGS.
bristolsaint29 Posted 4 July, 2013 Posted 4 July, 2013 My relative was mayor of southampton, Michael Andrews I can categorically confirm he never got a season ticket for free.
ShirleySaint Posted 4 July, 2013 Posted 4 July, 2013 Both the people I spoke to were mayor in the 80's I think so perhaps it was abolished at a later date? If you want us to believe you why don't you name them. As they were (allegedly) Mayors, they can't be shy of a bit of publicity. There were ten mayors during the eighties (in Southampton it's a different councillor each year, although occasionally a former mayor will be selected for a second stint), but don't pick any two of them at random, they might be readers of this board.

Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 4 Beta While the season ticket part may be technically true, a number of staff get given a couple of comp tickets for every home game for friends/family to use.
Marsdinho Posted 4 July, 2013 Posted 4 July, 2013 I wish all threads were like this... - Someone posts something they've "heard" - Qualified posters provide accurate information as to the validity of this claim. - Thread is concluded with the correct information in the public domain. If only.

joe botyov Posted 6 July, 2013 Posted 6 July, 2013 i can 100% confirm that ex mayors defiantly DONT get free tickets , as my mum used to be the mayor and she buys her own season ticket
ghq Posted 7 July, 2013 Posted 7 July, 2013 I'm the mayor and so is my wife! I/we get free season tickets but dont't use them as the weekly airfares are too expensive.
Saint Without a Halo Posted 7 July, 2013 Posted 7 July, 2013 When are some of you lot going to realise that the club belongs to Marcus's family and is run by NC. They, between them, have the absolute right to decide who, if anyone, they wish to give free tickets to and it really is non of our business! Some fans continue to behave as though they somehow own the club!
