Matthew Le God Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Former Saints star Mel Blyth is considering selling his 1976 FA Cup winner’s medal in order to give some money to his two children, Kelly and Michael. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/10521922.Cup_final_medal_up_for_sale/ Peter Rodrigues’ medal was sold 9 years ago and was bought by Rupert Lowe for £10,200 at auction. It is sad Blyth feels he should sell it, but I think it would be a good if the club brought Blyth's medal for say £20,000 (a drop in the ocean for them). It gives Mel the money he wants for his children and a part of Saints history can go in the trophy cabinet.
JPTCount Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 the current squad could probably empty more than 10k out their wallets in a quick whip round
alpine_saint Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 As if NC will support a link to past glories. Get real, MLG. Its not just the money (we can probably raise it between us), its the issue of putting it in the trophy cabinet. Is Rodruiges' medal even still in there ?
The Kraken Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Fair play if he wants to sell it, no problem with that. But I wouldn't expect the club to fork out for it. There is obviously precedent set with Peter Rodrigues, though (without wishing in any way to denigrate or prioritise some contributions over others) I'd suggest PR's along with Bobby Stokes' would be more of an obvious case for the club to fund it. Difficult one, but I wouldn't choose to criticise the club if they decide to give this one a miss.
Saint Charlie Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 As if NC will support a link to past glories. Get real, MLG. Like employing Terry Paine as Honorary President?
Fan The Flames Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 The council could buy it and display it somewhere where we all can see it.
Horley CTFC Saint Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Like employing Terry Paine as Honorary President? Gives Saints more exposure in SA
Wurzel Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Has he tried Cash for Gold ? Seriously, that's the trouble with precedents. Once you've done it for one it's hard to justify not doing it for another. At least we know there's a maximum of twelve who can try the same thing.
georgeweahscousin Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Why aren't 'Kelly and Michael' telling him not to sell his medal? How badly do they need money? It would be nice for the club to buy it, but they should certainly not feel obliged to.
OfnPanad Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Am I the only one that thinks it's a bit crap that one of our ex-players who helped win our only major trophy has to consider selling his medal for a sum that we pay our bench players in what? 3 weeks?

You are not the only one. What disturbs me al well is the idea of Rupert Lowe having one of the medals.
Hatch Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Kelly and Michael can go out and get a job like everyone else. It's not up to the club to support them.
theyin Posted 4 July, 2013 Posted 4 July, 2013 How many people on here? A fiver each from SWF, official supporters club and club members to be doubled by the club could do it. A growing collection to be held and displayed at the club, recognising who the purchases were funded by. Hatch, would you not like to give your kids a bung for a deposit on their first mortgage for example? This is not a matter of the club supporting them, it's a matter of not letting it go into private hands where fans won't ever be able to see it.
angelman Posted 4 July, 2013 Posted 4 July, 2013 Why are people getting so excited about this? Hatch in #12 has it spot on. If Kelly & Michael had some disability/illness and Blyth was struggling financially to support them, then I would have more sympathy. Blyth wants to cash in one of his mementos - it obviously means something to him, as he wants to keep it within the Saints "family", but obviously he isn't too attached to it. If one was being cynical, you could say that he is playing on the emotions of Saints supporters in order to up the price.

It remaining in the family's hands and fans not being able to see it? And who needs top see a cup final winner's medal anyway? If the family want to sell it, fine, no problem with that. Just don't expect the fans or the club to fork out for it.
