Inexperience in the Transfer Market

Conversation between some Saints fans and Alan Nixon (Mirror Journalist that is usually pretty reliable when it comes to Saints News/Rumours):

tom7lawrence: @reluctantnicko seems quiet at St. Mary's, any saints news Al?

reluctantnicko: @tom7lawrence Too quiet.

tom7lawrence: @reluctantnicko is that quiet before the storm u think?

reluctantnicko: @tom7lawrence There will be a storm if it stays this quiet. Coach wanted players. The Don demanded the cheque book ... Who to blame now?

tom7lawrence: @reluctantnicko sounds like a conspiracy theory u have there ha ha

reluctantnicko: @tom7lawrence No. The Don wanted control. He got control. If he can't sign players it is on him. No-one else.

tom7lawrence: @reluctantnicko so is it wages , agents fees, over ambitious targets or a combination of all 3?

reluctantnicko: @tom7lawrence Seems like targets are good but problems crop up. Best word to cover all of the failed deals is 'inexperience in market'

d9scott: @reluctantnicko @tom7lawrence there still a while in the window. not quite the time to expect the worst

So seems like Les Reed/Cortese have picked out a number of key targets during the season to buy in the summer, said to MoPo that they'll be plenty of signings but don't really know how to do complete the signing of a player.

Worrying if this is true, would hope we're a bit more savvy in the transfer market than Nixon thinks.

Yes, we evidently do not know how to sign players... sigh.

MoPo at the end of last season:

We will try to speed us the decisions that need to be made because, if we can't get things sorted by 1 July, players are going to have trouble adapting."

Where's the issue with that? I'm seeing the word "hope", not "have".

The issue with that is that is:

A. Got fans hopes up that we'd actually be able to get our arse in gear and sign almost everyone we wanted to sign before July 1st.

B. MoPo was assured (behind the scenes) that we'd make signings quickly, before pre-season and it hasn't come to fruition, we've only signed Loven for pete's sake and Wanyama is signing for Cardiff this week.

Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle, West Brom and Crystal Palace still to get their first signing of the summer.

Guess they´re even more inexperienced then??

I personally wasn't saying we're unexperienced in the transfer market, just passing on the advice of a trusted journo (in regards to Saints) that we are (in his opinion) unexperienced in the transfer market.

To be fair to Cortese he can only do so much, it's up to a player and his agent if they want to come and that's still a hard sell given were a bottom tier PL side

I do wonder if/why we're not in for lower tier players as well though, or if all our eggs are in the 'big signing' bracket. Hopefully we're doing both and building a better squad

What people need to remember is that we are looking at European top level players, those deals aren´t finished in a couple of days.

It´s not the Darren Kentons, Higginbothams and Telfers we´re trying to get in here these days...

Is this a real quote?

Yes.

I did paraphrase though, his exact quote was:

"We will try to speed us the decisions that need to be made because, if we can't get things sorted by 1 July, players are going to have trouble adapting."

Thing is we're going for ambitious targets, we're competing against Champions League teams for these targets. The success rate is going to be low, but it only takes one.

Failing that, we can then lower our ambitions a bit and sign a couple of good, competitive squad players.

Enjoy the ride, no need to panic.

I was thinking its "too quiet" myself as well. Two weeks ago the latest player associated with us was coming out every day... Now nothing for a fortnight. Its almost like NC has said " if this gets out deal

Is dead"....as was rumoured to be part of his modus operandii.woild not be surprised if we got multiethnic irons in fires right now...just edit and see...

Needless panic over transfers already. Obviously NC can't deal in transfer market efficiently, Ramirez and Lovren prove this.

Not to mention Yoshida, Boruc, Lee and loads of British based signings. We've probably signed more players than many other clubs over the last 3 or 4 years, so our inexperience is obvious.

Nowhere near close enough to the transfer deadline to give up on primary targets. I am genuinely not fussed other than being eager to understand who our actual targets are.

I am assuming we are going after players who are better than what we have, I don't think those sort of signings happen out of the blue. I'd imagine many players wait to see if something better comes along as well which is fair enough.

Unless this Nixon chap provides some insight as to what this 'inexperience' consists of I am not too bothered about what he says either, whether it is true or not. Journalists who act cryptic are annoying.

I wonder how many of these knock backs we seem to get are down to the fact we are heading into World Cup year, some of these names we are looking at are internationals or fringe, they surely must have one eye on Brazil? Lets be honest we are not a big boy in world football and we are not a well known club on the world stage.

In the last 4 years Nicola Cortese has completed 51 incoming (loan/transfer) player transactions for a total cost of over £50m, including ones for £12m, £10m and £7m. Last year he secured circa £35m worth of incoming transfers whilst paying only £600k in agent fees.

He is not "inexperienced in the transfer market".

He is inexperienced in bringing in the type of players we have been linked with this window i.e. players who should be playing for top European teams.

Also Nixon did not say inexperience in the transfer market he said inexperience in the market. We are inexperienced in the market of players we are going for it seems.

I think he's mistaking Corteses refusal to play ball with agents as inexperience in all honesty. Makes sense though as agents of top quality players are going to want a bigger cut.

So quite a big difference from what you quoted originally then.

Well if that is the case (and of course it is speculation) then it is possibly still inexperience to think we can sign all these top players and yet pay the agents nothing. It is pointless going for players and then not paying agents the going rate as they will not be coming here.

OK so you agree then that we show inexperience in the market we are going for.

Lovren and Ramirez suggest that some will. Yes, alot won't like the lack of agent fee on offer and we'll get a lot of rejections but some deals for big players will go through imo. Just a question of patience and sticking to your principles. Which I think Cortese will do. If more chairmen took Cortese's approach to agent fees football would be better off!

A lot of panic over nothing really. If signings were straightforward then the football columns in the papers become meaningless.

I think people read way too much into the comments MP said about the 1st of July etc.

But it only takes about 5-6 clicks on football manager...?
