Brave Sir Robin Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 Been reading this forum for the last couple of years, but haven't posted till now. About this years kit... I was as unimpressed as the next man when I first saw the lack of stripes, black shorts & white socks....until I got to mass on Sunday (hear me out!). You see, the catholic church celebrates the 12 apostles at various points in the year (the apostles, of course, being saints), this Sunday, the day when the new kit first went on sale, being one such day. On these days, the priest and servers wear red robes with gold embroidered details over their white garb, the sleeves of which protude from under the red. The similarity in appearence was striking! Of course, when priests are away from their church, they wear black with a white collar. This years away kit has a similar look about it. Cant help wonder if the Don thought an ecclesiastical theme for his Saints might be nice this year?! Now I stress this is just a theory, and admit it's just as likely to be coincidence (after all, I could just as easily point out that we seem to be paying homage to Postman Pat's van!), but the familiarity and connotations of this years kit are now making this years kit feel a bit more inspiring to me. Hopefully it'll do the same for Gaston and the raft of Spanish and South American players we're bound to sign for silly money any day now!
Brave Sir Robin Posted 2 July, 2013 Author Posted 2 July, 2013 ...and if I could work out how to edit posts on here, I'd change that last bit so it doesn't say this years kit twice in such quick succession, but it's early days yet for me. I'll try to keep a check on my grammar in future. COYR!, btw
Wurzel Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 If the players take to the pitch wearing glowing yellow headbands you could well be onto something.
Hatch Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 I'm liking this theory. See, even the sash kit was blessed.
Colinjb Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 90's film reference. Bonus point if anyone gets it.....
Gambol2K9 Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 Interesting post, probably coincidence but could have something in it. A bit deep for a kit designer to have come up with mind..
kpturner Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 I put this the chances of this theory being in any way correct at around 0.00000000001%
saintadjg Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 90's film reference. Bonus point if anyone gets it..... Dogma - Buddy Christ
Saint_clark Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 If they'd marketed it that way, I'd actually think it was a decent idea. However it wasn't, so it clearly isn't what they intended - and even if it were true it's still second hand to Bristol City.

As a liturgical colour for the R.C. church, red symbolizes the Passion, blood, fire and martyrdom; white symbolizes light, innocence, purity, joy, triumph, and glory. White is used much more in the Catholic liturgy than any other colour. Red-and-white stripes, therefore, would be more versatile - would match the needs of many more days than a kit that is predominantly red.
Pugwash Posted 2 July, 2013 Posted 2 July, 2013 And I guess the three stripes represent the holy trinity. Ted, Jack and Dougal.
theyin Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I like your thinking but somehow doubt it's the thought process gone through. A much more interesting read than most posted on here though and thanks for that
Brave Sir Robin Posted 3 July, 2013 Author Posted 3 July, 2013 If they'd marketed it that way, I'd actually think it was a decent idea. Indeed. ... I'd consider applying for a job in SFC's marketing dept., only Matt Le Tiss (aka God) tells me NC isn't the nicest of folk to work for!
alehouseboys Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 And I guess the three stripes represent the holy trinity. Ted, Jack and Dougal. Not sure about your spelling... ...and wasn't Markus was a religious type, maybe there's something in this?
Barry Sanchez Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 (edited) Liebherr bought Southampton because of their Protestant/CofE past allegedly (Saints), he was a religeous man of a Protestant slant so I certainly cant see that, also St Marys/Southampton FC is of CofE origin, no popery here please. Fan The Flames Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 That theory is 'nailed on' for me, but you have just spoilt the plot for Dan Browns next book.
jjsaint Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I'll dress up as a raped altar boy - doubled over with bloodstains running down my trousers.
Raging Bull Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 I'll dress up as a raped altar boy - doubled over with bloodstains running down my trousers. That really isn't funny...
notnowcato Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 Good Old Brave Sir Robin. Word to the wise though... your "sudden" appearance will be viewed as the second coming (or possibly third / fourth) of a previous poster. Good luck!

That kind of dyed in the wool tradition means nothing to our fair leader.
jjsaint Posted 3 July, 2013 Posted 3 July, 2013 That really isn't funny... I quite agree but it felt like something that needed to be done.

I think you'll find that the CofE wears the same colours at the same times of year as their RC counterparts. It is all, after all, "one holy catholic and apostolic church" Edited 3 July, 2013 by Brave Sir Robin
