Trader Posted 3 July, 2013 Share Posted 3 July, 2013 I think they must be starting earlier than the usual day to day mid season training, I used to pass Jose Fonte at about 8.30 at Michelmersh, the last 3 days he's been going through Romsey at 8.00. Is MP getting an extra 30 minutes out of them? He must live a fair way out if you're passing him up there. He must do, Michelmersh to Staplewood is nearly 13 whole miles! Giordano Posted 3 July, 2013 Share Posted 3 July, 2013 I pasted this from "the science of soccer". It's talking about the last World Cup, semi finalists were Spain Uruquay, Germany and Holland. Unsurprisingly, the teams that run the most don't win the most. From a team standpoint, the distance covered per match by each team did not correlate with passing, shot attempts or goals scored per match. In fact, of the 8 teams that covered the most distance per match, half made the round of 16 and only two made the quarterfinals. Also, of the eight teams posting the top sprint speeds, three did not advance past the round of 16. Finally the distance covered by the four semifinalists was only slightly more than the average for all 32 teams. So, the relationship between fitness and team success at the World Cup Finals level is a bit muddled. There is no correlation between running and success in isolation. Only in England (and the USA) is there the accepted as FACT sentiment that players who run around a lot are good, and those that do not are not so good. Its why players like MLT did not get recognition he deserved. It's why Berbatov is still regarded with suspicion in the UK yet players inferior to him like most forwards in the EPl are better regarded. Its another reason why England are galaxies away from ever winning the WC.
DuncanRG Posted 3 July, 2013 Share Posted 3 July, 2013 (edited) It's not surprising that distance covered doesn't correlate with success. You cover more distance when you're out of possession and chasing the ball, ask anyone who's played against Spain in the last 5 years. More interesting is the sprint speed stat. DuncanRG Posted 3 July, 2013 Share Posted 3 July, 2013 would be interesting to know who was the fasted player. Morgan? Mayuka or Rodriguez I'd imagine. Morgan probably covers the most ground. Superb excuse-making lads; well done. It hardly matters, we are one of the fitter sides in the league.
Saint Charlie Posted 3 July, 2013 Author Share Posted 3 July, 2013 Interesting to hear that Fitness Coach Nick Harvey said Jay Rod impressed him the most in the fitness tests and is a supreme athlete. With a little more confidence in front of goal he could be a superb player. Prototype build for a striker: Quick, lean, tall, enough strength but not too much to ruin agility - only 23 as well. Definitely looked lean on the pictures the club posted yesterday http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/article/gallery-pre-season-fitness-tests-890708.aspx. SRL looks to have lost some weight too. Saint_clark Posted 3 July, 2013 Share Posted 3 July, 2013 Man City away was just the kind of bombardment that happens from good teams, likewise Man Utd home which was also poor tactics by NA. Stoke away was poor tactics from NA sitting back too much and changing to a back 5 against a team that like to pin you back. Wigan away was poor concentration, but hardly fitness as the goal we scored 5 mins earlier on the counter attack was a demonstration of excellent fitness and stamina. Spurs away was a freak. ...specifically from Shaw, such a shame.

I would actually like to see him gain some extra core strength as one of his main weaknesses was his one on one strength with defenders last year on several occasions. Maybe this could just be experience, but feel it will come with age, dedicated training and playing matches at the top.
