Saints' kits through history (+other striped teams)

Saw interesting site showing all of our kits.

Deliberately leaving views on new kit to other threads but some good memories.

Also interesting with comparisons with the north east clubs - they have pretty much stuck with traditional even vertical stripes.

Since 76 we have had a variety of other designs, rather than traditional even vertical stripes more seasons than not.

Personal favorites 1980-85 and 2010.

Yours?

Not intended to repeat other debates.

My favourite is the 87 - 89 Shirt. Occasionally see fans still wear this one.

IMO that is the worst shirt in our history.

My personal faves

Rank Xerox (WHY does the club not want to bring that back ??)

Sash

Wigan Rugby League (because MLT became the greatest player in our history wearing that kit, because he single-handedly stop us being relegated wearing it)

Just looking through all those striped kits made me realise how few I've actually bought. Now away kits is a different matter as I have purchased quite a few of those. Rank Xerox favourite. Sash kit second. Last seasons pin stripes third.

Looking through those brings it home just how shyte the current kit is. Last years grew on me and I ended up getting it (easy present for the in-laws to get me at Christmas), and you can kind of see it fitting in with what went before it. The new kit just doesn't, it looks like someone else's kit altogether.

Interesting, Saints have certainly experimented more than most other clubs with the Red and White stripes. Since 1980 we have had several designs - my favourite is between 'The Sash' and our Championship promotion shirt. Don't understand the fascination with the Rank Xerox shirt, it is as much a traditional saints shirt as the new one.

Loved the original Hummel Denmark kit. Didn't get released until August, so had to wait to get it for my birthday. 12th birthday I think. Great days.

And that is what is known as a genuine childhood memory, as opposed to a made up one specially fabricated with added 2013 opinions to make some lame-ass point.

shirtssoth1.jpg It not only kind of incorporated stripes but was also a nod to our formative years when Southampton St. Mary's used to wear red and white halves.

Say what you like about guy askham but he always upheld our traditions. He was a proper chairman.

Hummel did some good kits for us. That one, and the striped one that we beat Liverpool 4-1 in was an absolute cracker. I also really liked the white and aquamarine away kit they did for us.

Solent Green. That was another birthday present. Loved it.

Hummel 89 stripes were great, and the best shorts we ever had too.

The socks were brilliant too; they had a little Saints badge in them. I found a pair for 99p in the sports shop near Debenhams (Sportskit??) and they were my footy socks of choice for years!

Yes I remember them, used to wear them for my tyro league side, good socks. Now wasn't that an all away white kit too?

Looking at that site I can see why people would be upset at losing stripes. (the traditionalists) personally i am not that bothered but looking at other clubs (reading, Bournemouth, C Palace) you can see they do not really have an idenitity and swap shirts (and almost colours) at a whim as they possibly seek that identity.

One of my all time favourites too, still have it though I doubt I'd fit a ten year olds kit nowadays. It's being saved for the next generation.

My personal worst was the Pony Dimplex one, even though it was worn during the Le Tiss golden era. I just thought it looked cack, plus other teams had the exact same kit in their own colours (sound familiar?) such as West Ham.

Pretty skimpy shorts by today's standards if I remember.

That was the ones with the Denmark kit. They were small.

The ones with the sevond Hummel kit were quite a long way further along the "bloomers" end of the scale.

For me it's the admiral kits of the 70s. I wish they could re-create that in a modern strip. Looking at the other team's kits our Hummel (wide stripes) is virtually identical to Sunderland's Hummel from 1991-94 and I recall that both Villa and Coventry (as well as Denmark) wore the same template as us in the first hummel strip, so it's not just nowadays that they work off a template.

Loved that kit and the Rank Xerox. Lad somehow got the Denmark kit early and came to school and was the envy of the entire school. I still have the same style kit (Hummel) for Coventry (obviously, sky blue) following their winning the FA Cup win v Spurs, given to me by John Sillet, as well as my Saints shirt, somewhere. Wish I had kept my Admiral kit from the 70s. Wasn't that the Rideout days (Hummel kit) as well as Shearer? Disclaimer: I just liked the CCFC kit when I was a kid, as you do, not merging allegiance elsewhere, before the trolls or perpetual argument seekers pipe up. ;o)

Seeing all those other kits makes me realise how much I hate that new kit. Abhorrent. Stupid white, imbalanced neck bit with ridiculous gold motifs.....NO!!! Last season's kit I didn't like but it looks amazing compared to this current aberration. I bought my son the 2011/12 Striped kit (AAP) and that has to be the nicest of the recent kits. Oh well. It'll only last a season. Let's hope we don't win anything so it's stuck in the history books!! ;o)

Liked last seasons away white kit the most, the Pony kit the least. If I had to go for a home kit the 1948/49 season works for me with the navy shorts. Much better than the black ones.

nice post

amazed to see we didn't have stripes from 80-89.

I know everyone harks on about rank xerox but what was the general fan opinion in September '80?

people dismayed by decision yet shirt still sells record numbers?

Rank Xerox favourite. Sash kit second. Cup final stripes next. I welcome us trying variations of the stripes from time to time; apart from when it looks sh*t, like this year and last year.

THE away kit of dark/light blue was ok too
