Given the current themes on saints players . I was just wondering who you thought were your favourite good honest players who did a job for us . They never set the world on fire but we took them as our favourites . I have 5

Richard Dryden

Neil Heaney

Trevor hebberd

Mel Blythe

And the the late Steve mills .

In fact the more I think about it I could name 30 quite easily

Manny andrusheskil

The lad sealy who broke his leg at crystal palace .

The Alehouse lads.

David Armstrong - possibly one of the most unappreciated players we had, perhaps eclipsed by KK, Channon & Ball for a year or so, but still serving the club after they had all left.

Under NA we had a team of "good honest hardworking professionals" as he would often tell us.

Now of course we [the chairman] wants an expensively assembled, and highly paid, bunch of foreign mercenaries.

Paul Telfer, everyone hated him but me, always workmen like. Even when he was having a shocker he never hid away. Even played champions league football after his spell with us!

Holmes is top of my list, utterly reliable totally dedicated one club man

Totally this.

Then when he stopped playing he went on being a Good Honest guy running his Post Office, playing village cricket for Winterslow for many years (giving us mere mortals the chance to share a Sports Pitch with a Legend) and then helping to get Salisbury up through the lower leagues.

Good, Honest and a True Gent

What exactly is a good honest pro? Someone that tried hard, but can best be described at limited? The sort of player who if it was as sunday league team would turn up every week and help put the goals up even is they weren't sure they'd get a game?

Most mentioned also seem to be British, so I guess this must be a prerequisite too?

New song for him then Turks

Guly's bound to Ancient code of decency and secrecy

He understands about stabbing backs and shaking hands

So if or when you’re behind bars or in front of them as you are

Look out for the man who’ll bum your wife and then shake your hand

Agree.

Always felt sorry for Holmes, as he was called into the England U21's (at a time when a call up was recognition and earnt) but pulled out injured. He never had the chance again.

I often wondered if his appearance as a young man counted against him, as at 21 he had a Bjorn Borg type 'grizzly' beard and looked an old (sea salt) type of campaigner. Steady and reliable without being spectacular too often (goal from near the halfway line v Watford in the League Cup aside, and a few blistering volleys in the early days). Played LB, LM and filled in as a CB for a short while.

One of the most unassuming professional footballers I've seen interviewed.

Does Jimmy Case count or was he too good a player?

Really?

He was a brilliant player and was also a model pro at a time the likes of letiss, shearer, Rod wallace were all coming through and needed protection and guidance. So yes probably too good to just be a good honest pro if that means average player not likely to get in another top flight starting 11.
