People are questioning whether we are aiming to high (I know based on rumours) but how much room in our squad is there for realistic / back up players?

This is our most recent squad..

Butterfield

Chaplow

Cork *

Davis, K *

Davis, S *

De Ridder

Forren *

Do Prado

Fonte

Fox

Hooiveld

Lallana *

Lambert *

Lee

Mayuka,

Puncheon *

Ramirez *

Richardson *

Rodriguez *

Schneiderlin *

Yoshida *

Boric *

Martin

Reckon * players pretty likely to be in the 25. Plus Lovren. Reckon at least one out of Jos/Fonte. I wouldn't be surprised if Mayuka and Fox were in MP's plans. Takes us to around 17.

I'm not sure if any younger players are now old enough to need to be added this season (MLG?)

Although don't have to have full squad I would imagine pretty close.

So either likes of Guly/ Tandari Lee will be included or we may sign another 6 or so players.

In order to achieve the Chairman's stated goal of getting us into the top 6, we need the following :

Right back, centre back, left back, defensive midfielder, two wide attacking midfielders, at least one striker.

We have lost or factored out Butterfield, Richardson, Martin and Seaborne (signed Lovren to replace one of those already), Fox can go, need more depth in midfield where players pick up suspensions and are prone to contact injuries, can sideline Guly, De Ridder and Chaplow and need more options than just Rodriguez/Lambert/Mayuka up top.

That's another 7 players by my reckoning, can't see us signing all of them immediately though and I'm not convinced of any academy first team intake this season.

We have one more season of people with Championship and below contracts hanging around before we should have a full squad of players with Prem experience who are all capable of performing at a non-relegation level when called on. We're not at that point yet.

Clyne is now old enough to be included in the 25 apparantly

You mean he's old enough that we HAVE to include him in the 25, I can't see how having to use a space on a player who previously didn't count towards the total is a good thing !

For the 2013/14 campaign "Under 21 players" will have been born on or after 1st January 1992.

- Nathaniel Clyne was born on 5th April 1991 so he won't be an under 21 player next season.

- Paulo Gazzaniga was born on 2nd January 1992 - so he will still be an under 21 player (just! :D)

This is Southampton's list after the January 2013 transfer window...
